Haven't had my diagnosis yet, but belive I may have adult ADD (age 47). In fact, a co-worker and a student (I work at a college) assumed I had ADD!! Anyway, here are some things not found on the usual quizzes that they swear are signs of ADD in adults:

Many medicine work contrary-, for example, Benadryl keeps you awake.

Caffeine has a calming effect rather than an 'exciting' effect and copious amounts are consumed all day.

Nicotine works (smoked for 35 years, quit this January and depression and ADD exploded).

Low body temperature, low blood pressure.

I am particularly intrigued by the Benadryl and caffeine. (BTW, Claritin does not wake me up...) Would love to hear others' thoughts.

Lol, before I was diagnosed I used to drink coffee to help me sleep. Benadryl, caffeine, and more! I also had low body temperature and low blood pressure too. I've never taken Benadryl so I don't know what kind of effect it would have on me.

all of those things also trigger anxiety.

i had the same reactions and ended up on Xanax as needed 3 months after I quit smoking.

I believe caffeine can be mildly beneficial in treating ADHD. However, I think the dosage would have to be really high. My neurologist asked me about my caffeine intake. He wanted to know how I felt after drinking my morning coffee.

I'm not sure about the other things you listed. Allergy medications typically result in elevated blood pressure.

My main contradictory side effect is with Abuterol. It leaves most people with a racing heart, a little anxiety, and nervous energy. I am deeply relaxed. I have used both inhalers and the nebulizer treatments for panic attacks and once, after a treatment in an Urgent Care visit I had to ask a nurse to walk me to the bathroom because I was also a little stoned.

I think many people with untreated ADHD may subconsciously self-medicate with caffeine. However, my pdoc said that a stimulant medication- even a low dose- would be the equivalent of 20 cups of coffee in terms of how much stimulant it gives you. So I'm not sure if a couple cups of coffee during the day would have such a drastic effect on your ability to focus. But I could be wrong. Like always, it's best to talk to a professional.

I've found that caffeine, in particular energy drinks, do indeed give me more energy and help me stay awake. And sleep aids (antihistamines) help me sleep. But I have the inattentive type ADHD, so I'm not sure if that changes anything.

Looool I have ADHD and Benadryl puts me out. Caffeine doesn't do anything however. Recently i wanted to see if they actually work so I took 5 8 hour energy shots and a monster energy drink which totalled 1200mg of caffeine and it didn't do anything I was still sleepy so..

Yep the quitting smoking brought on the diagnosis of ADHD at the age of 40. Huge amounts of caffeine with the cigarettes.

Aderrall 'soothed the beast'

No more cigarettes, down to two or three cups of coffee a day.
