Not a therapy book or anything like that, but the book "Silver Linings Playbook" is great. The movie was good, but the book is great. Just if you feel like reading something that resonates but is fiction.

I am currently reading "72 Hour Hold" by Bebe Campbell. It's helping me understand how my illness affects my family and friends. Somehow, that never occurred to me. It's rough on them, too.

I love "An Unquiet Mind" by Dr. Redfield-Jamison. It was one of the books I
was introduced to when diagnosed with bipolar d/o.

Veronika Decides to Die!!! by Paulo Coelho

This is a really good book about the human condition. The backdrop is about a girl who tries to commit suicide but wakes up in a mental hospital. I recommend it to anyone cares to read something insightful. It's pretty short and easy to read.

I've actually picked both of these up from the public library. I already read Manic by Terri Cheney and Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen. Now I've started with some of the more stringent reads like Living Well... Reading helps but I find myself sometimes in a state of overload like I'm getting too much validation, it starts to make me feel even crazier.

Other times, it's just nice to know someone else has been there and to see your own words on someone else's page.

i second this.

a multi-layered book that stands out in the other psychward books... Lot of focus on humanity, personal stories of the characters... and human spirit.

There are a series of books by Mary Ellen Copeland, all of them about bipolar, which I think she says she also has. The books were helful to me in making some order in my very chotic life. Several are about what she calls the WRAP program. It's about initiating and and maintaining order and structure in your life. Her books were a godsend to me! I highly recommend them.

I can feel depression coming on. Last night I googled Winston Churchill because he always called his depressions his "black dogs". I call them that too.

I found a newspaper article from the Toronto Globe and Mail about a book that a man has written about some of the world's greatest leaders, and how their being mentally ill, like Winston Churchill was, gives them a vital edge in their countries' times of crisis and war. He also talks about the richest of the rich, the most successful men like Ted Turner.

He wrote about mentally ill leaders like Churchill, John F Kennedy, General Sherman, General McLelland, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. He believes that these men, although there is no proof, may have been indeed bipolar. He then compares them to men like George Bush and President Obama, whom he claims are simply too mentally healthy to be good leaders during wartime.

I went to my local library's e-books website and downloaded the book last night. I read the first few chapters. I'm looking forward to reading this book. It looks to be very interesting.

The author is Nassir Ghaemi, and the book is titled "A First-Rate Madness".

Brain on Fire My Month of Madness...

interesting book.

Personally I think her habits might have caused part of her issues and she may have been hypomanic before her brain got attacked by her immune system.

Interesting read if you have had psychotic breaks in biploar episodes.

I'm not sure if these are on there, but Prozac Nation is one of my faves. I'm also reading Diary of a Bipolar which has proven to be insightful as well.

A lovely book about a man and his wife where the man is
Bipolar is Dancing on Broken Glass by KA Hancock.

While this book is fiction she does a great job of portraying the characteristics of a bipolar person with its many ups and downs. For those of us who are single it also gives you hope in that someday you too will find a person that accepts your condition with open arms of love.

I'm currently reading, and so far it's great and extremely informative: The Bipolar Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know" 2nd edition by David J. Miklowitz PhD.

Touched by Fire and An Unquiet Mind are both excellent books by Kay Redfield Jaminson, who is diagnosed with Bipolar 1. Touched by Fire elaborates on the gifts of bipolar disorder, pointing to many scientist, authors, and artists who very likely have it. An Unquiet Mind is her memoir. In it she talks about her ups and downs and love of the manias.

Darkeyes, love your quote, "In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend." That's the best advice ever for anyone anywhere, especially for this website.

An excellent book on OCD: Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D. It worked for me.

The Noonday Demon by Andrew Solomon is a pretty decent book. I am currently listening to the audio version.

Considering reading: A First-Rate Madness
Uncovering the Links between Leadership and Mental Illness
by Nassir Ghaemi

This looks like a decent book to study what some of our historical leaders may have gone through.

Cool thread, this need to keep going, so we can all share what books, shows or movies we would recommend to our friends here, I know I'd rather get a referral from you guys than other random people who do not walk in our shoes. I have a couple I'll add in a bit, can't access the titles right now but an author Jamison...that's her last name...she's a PhD and has written a couple of books on BP as she is also afflicted. And she's now a doc herself! I'll get the rest of that info in a bit if you're not already familiar with her work. Thanks for sharing this

Much love, Diane
