When I'm depressed I don't care. Not that I'm not aware but I don't care. So unless I have to go somewhere I will often not bother with showers or even getting out of my pajamas for as long as I can do that. So far today I'm still in my pajamas, haven't showered, haven't combed my hair and haven't even brushed my poor teeth (yet when I'm well that would be appalling as I'm trying so hard to protect my teeth from the damage from dry mouth all these years). I just don't care.

Sometimes when manic it's also hard because I don't want to slow down and do something so boring and that means standing still and where agitation isn't helpful. It does help me calm down and sometimes helps with sleep (with both mania and depression) so on bad nights I'll force it sometimes for that reason.

Is it something like that?

Bipolar people failing to, or not wanting to take a bath/shower is most common. I do take a daily shower. If you are not taken a regular bath/shower, it's very possible people do smell you, and you do not know you stink. For that reason alone, I would. Other reason would be it's a more healthy thing to do.
Thanks for this!

Similiar to that i have been in a mild depressive state for about 2 months now after a short manic episode. I say mild because i am forcing myself to function right now a friend of mine had a stroke 7 weeks ago and still in the hospital he is relying on me for alot of stuff right now. I also decided it was time to go back to school during a manic episode and somehow managed to stick to it right now. I shower atleast on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights because i have classes monday wednesday and friday. I also ho to outpatient groups tuesday and thursdays and friday afternoons. My life is crazy right now but im functioning somehow.

I also have trouble with bathing. I can go days without really caring. That or the good old "im too busy." Tends to get me. I have to schedual my bathing or i probably wouldnt do it at all. I just dont ever feel the need. And dont even get me started on my poor teeth. I would say you're definately not alone.

Actually its been proven better for your health to shower every 3 -4 days. Better for your skin and hair.

I struggle now. I never used to, it was just habit, then I got out of the habit and its hard to get back into it.

I have barely left the homestead for months anyway. (apart from the doctors)
Thanks for this!

I shower every day whether I want to or not its just a law I made for myself , Literally take only 5 mins.. (I do not wash my hair everyday) .

Its okay to go a couple days.. But there are parts of a human body that really needs washed daily If not a full shower or bath at least a birdie bath.. imho

Dont beat yourself up -

Quote:
Previous research by Energy Australia revealed 29 per cent of us hit the shower twice daily, while 9 per cent boasted three showers a day. Compare this to the shower-shy Chinese: 50 per cent claim to wash twice a week, while in Sweden less than 50 per cent of women bother with a daily wash.

How often should we shower? Much less often than you think

The Science Of Showering: Why Showering Too Much Is Bad For You

Its only been fairly recently in human history that we have taken to bathing daily.

Washing hands is far more important in this day and age.

I know personally my cystic acne was MUCH worse if cleansed once or twice a day. I was told my only option was dangerous medication and harsh chemicals. I stopped cleansing with EVERYTHING (and I had tried 100's of different products), used rose hip on my skin and it has completely cleared up. I havent even used rose hip for 6 months and my skin is the best it has ever been.

I am now complimented on my skin and hair - which is strange considering my hygine is MUCH worse now, but spray on scent on my clothes seems to have everyone complimenting on smell too...

I felt guilty on my first reply, but now Im realising I know what works for me and what is best for my skin.

My mother-in-law has bipolar 1 and she has a lot of self-care issues. She lives with us so we are pretty aware of them. I don't think she feels dirty ever, either. But, she does feel embarrassed. One thing she does is she will shower before she has to leave the house for doctor's appointments.

At least 3 times that I'm aware of, she didn't wash or brush her hair to the point that it became a big giant mat on the back of her head and we had to cut all of her hair off.

I realized I should add to what I wrote that eventually I will feel that I must shower. I hit that point today so it was 3 days and I think that's probably about as long as I ever can go. It's been longer before but around 3-4 days I usually feel like I must shower.

I strive to shower or take a bubble bath most days of the week. Once I actually do it, I ask myself why I put it off. I understand how you feel...I've had to work on self-care.

Me too. How weird.

I think it is because it is a muti-step process. Take off clothes, turn on water, shampoo, condition, shave, cleanse, get out, pick out all new clothes, deodorant, fix hair.

If I didn't have 2 sons, I could just get in, wash, get out naked and get back in bed. lol

i live alone- so who's really here to complain?

I shower every other day or so, because I don't do much that makes me sweat. But I have a "birdie bath" every day, because like Christina said, there are certain parts of the body that needs to be washed daily. (And of course before and after one gets intimate with another person one needs to have a shower). I also change underwear every day. It is bad for my skin to shower or bathe daily. I wash my hair maybe four times a week, max. I think people are a bit obsessed with taking daily showers. All these daily showers waste a lot of water and electicity. So there is that side of it also. But if I do something that makes me sweat, then I feel dirty if I don't shower.
