My pdoc has strongly suggested I join a gym and go for at least 15 minutes a day five days a week. I think this is to get me started on getting out of the house and on exercise. I'm a self-acclaimed couch potato. I used to be strong and fit, but never thin, and I'd like to be strong and fit again, even if weight loss is a minor component of that.

I love going to the gym.

In my personal experience, it really helps if you join a gym class -- e.g., yoga, boxing, strength training, etc.. I think classes are much more exciting and motivating compared to working out on your own. (I get bored and lonely working out on my own.) On top of the excitement and motivation you get from a gym class, you also get to meet people who are interested in the same thing as you. It can help you develop friendships if you're into that.

I enjoy going to the gym and was fit and strong once. I have bad anxiety going. Recently hasn't been bad but sometimes like early am or during peak time I'm a mess to go. My doc also made me see it as a prescription that I have to take once a day or 4-5 times a week.

It helps a lot to put that little effort into yourself. I go at 10pm just so noone else is there.

My previous pdoc said the same thing. But if I'm depressed I cannot get off the couch! At the very least he said go outside and walk for at least 15 minutes to get the sunshine and move around. Maybe that's a good start instead of being intimidated by the gym at first.

I've made an appointment at the gym for this Friday at ten-thirty am, right after my nails are done

Wow, I'm proud of you. My anxiety prevents this - so I walk and ride a bike instead.

Does your cell phone have an activity application? You can set your goal of 15min activity. You can also set a goal for number of steps to take each day.

Thank you. I'm sure I'll be nervous, but that's what the klonopin is for.

My phone doesn't have an activity application - yet. I'll look into them.

I got a similar prescription from my Primary Care doc the other day. I've been taking walks with my hubby around the block and he encouraged me to increase to 3 times around the block. It feels like too much with my pain and depression. Plus, my husband just isn't up to it sometimes, and I cannot go alone (long story). But I'm determined to reach this goal and my husband is totally on board. We both need to PUSH ourselves hard to make this happen, but I'm sure we will.

My dad always said "you lay down with dogs, you come up with fleas". Meaning, we tend to acclimate too well to our surroundings. Do you know any Gym Rats who might be able to help or go with you to the gym? The idea of joining a class and gaining some friends with similar interests (getting fitter/stronger) could be seriously beneficial.

Wishing you the best. I know how daunting this can seem (unless you're hypo and motivated to save the world, one stair-stepper at a time) if 15 minutes is too much at first, start with 5. That is what I've done in the past when building endurance. Celebrate your success.

Find a 24 hour gym if you can then you can go anytime you want.
Thanks for this!

Well, I had an anxiety attack and didn't get to the gym yesterday. Going to try it again today, later. For all my bold words about klonopin, I didn't have any with me! Going to fix that today.

My case manager told me to start being more active. Then my primary did too. I started out walking at one of the local malls....early morning before the stores open...me and the little older ladies lol. Then my mom signed us up for a gym membership. We were trying to support each other by working out together. Well she works Mon-Fri daytime hours. I do not work. So we'd go when she finished from work ard 5:45 pm. The gym would be hot and packed with ppl. I could barely stay long. I suffered through this for a while. Then I jst told her I was going to start working out in the early mornings. Now I drop my daughter off at school and I'm at the gym by 8 am. There are usually like 1-5 ppl there on the fitness floor...it varies by the day. How long you workout should depend on what ur up for that day. Some days I'm up for 45 mins, 60 mins or 90. Sometimes I walk my dog 15 mins three times a day. Other days I might walk her for 30 mins. We live in apartments so I have to walk her.

I'm trying to do 30 minutes once a week at the gym. Then a yoga class. Then two walks around the neighborhood. For a total of four things per week. As Elton John said "I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do...."

Thought I'd share this. My husband just finished the beginner month and I'm just starting. For me, a laid out program is a necessity. Tell me what to do and when.

Coincidentally, today, May 1st, is the day I start my new health regimen. My plan is to start by walking for 45 minutes, which would be about three miles, and then to do about 15 minutes of yoga. I'll gradually increase both activities over time. I must also be a more healthy eater, as I am ten pounds overweight and my gut is in pitiful condition. Eventually I would like to add some meditation, but that is for later.

Love going to the gym. Put on the headphones and no one really bothers me. Helps me to feel better, keeps me out of the lows when I am there. A lot of fun. Try to find some good music, cause gym music is generally not good. Newly diagnosed here, was going to the gym before I was diagnosed and when I was diagnosed the doc said keep doing that 😃
