Think I'm in a rut. Lately all I do besides work is come home get my iPad and visit this site and a dating site, also play games. I need to clean up my place and get more active but I can't seem to get going. I don't know if it's anxiety, laziness, depression or something else, I gotta change my routine but I procrastinate and procrastinate every day. Someone help me get off my bed.

That can be tough. What about getting out to walk through a park, see the blossoming trees, hear the warbling birds, take in the outdoors? Something slow and easy might be soothing.

1) Ask yourself what you are getting out of being the way you are. Do you like being the center of your own pity party? Maybe you want a reward for becoming more responsible for your own feelings? Are you waiting to be rescued? Finally, what would change bring you? Would it be better than your present experience? Can you imagine what life would be like if you changed? Work that imagination...

2) Clean up your place. No one wants to date a secret slob.

3) Find a park to visit even if you are just sitting on a bench daydreaming. If it's cold, bundle up.

The law of inertia has you going in one direction. Fight back. I am in the same boat as you. We can change our futures.

Do the exact opposite things you want to do.

Lay around ? Get up
Play games ? Only allow it after you clean your _________

Bipolar blows but sometimes you just have to get off your *** and not think everything is bipolar and you have no control.

I don't feel like I'm feeling sorry for myself or depressed, it's just what I've been doing for x amount of time. Ok once in a while I'll be full of sorrow and feeling sorry for myself.
Life would be great if I can change. I'd go to the gym when I want, socialize "get out there" etc.

Maybe I just need the right kick in the arse. You say work that imagination, but how do I start? How do I push myself that extra inch to do what I want or wanted to do?

How do I make myself accountable and actually do. I feel this routine is the only thing I do. Hell I don't even watch tv and I got all the channels.

Accountable?

Get pissed that Bipolar is holding you back.

So tomorrow don't play your video game , take 15 mins and clean something.

Not sure where you live but go outside and take a walk, don't think just do it.

Don't do anything that right now is your routine.

Yes PC is supportive , but I know from my own experience that I needed a break from it because the constant reading was making me even feel worse.

hey. i can relate to having trouble getting out of bed and cleaning and stuff. i am also quite excellent at wasting time and procrastinating. it doesnt mean you are lazy, and in my opinion telling someone who thinks this way to "just do it" may be well meaning but is probably about as helpful as telling someone who struggles with weight to "just eat less and exercise more". its not nearly that simple!

here is a great article on procrastination by tim urban. i think he also did this topic as a ted talk:
part 1: Why Procrastinators Procrastinate - Wait But Why
part 2: How to Beat Procrastination - Wait But Why

i can relate to it a lot but still suck at doing much about it. ah well. such is being me.
also- i know several weeks ago i just felt sort of blah and bored and stuff, and wondered if it was low level depression or just me in a rut. And it turns out it was the beginning of a depression and it creeped up on me and escalated and is now kicking my ***. so just be watchful.

as for actually getting yourself to do stuff, sorry i dont have any grand solutions. i go to work bc i have to. stuff i dont have to do is much harder to motivate to do. But i agree that maybe completely shaking up your routine is a good plan to try out.
good luck. i feel you on this.

When I first started this journey I didn't believe people when they told me to just do it. to meditate. go outside. etc etc

After you have been doing it a long time and you realize your Pdoc dosent have the cure
Your therapist dosent have the cure
PC dosent have the cure. All the books and articles and memoirs do not have the cure
So there is no cure but the only one that can really help you is YOU. Going outside, meditating , diet , exercise ....all that stuff actually helps. It's not a cure, but it equals quality of life.
As they say....you can do what you have always done and get the results you have always got.....or take a chance and try other things.
Good luck!

I don't have answers, but you have my support---I do use a 15 minute timer as Christina suggested. I also make my bed everyday and run a load of laundry. I keep the kitchen clean. Those things help me.

Hope you feel better soon.

Well went online and saw the dog gumby video and checked bunch of other stuff. Tomorrow I work so my plan is to get up at 4 am, do my run training and get to work. Hopefully have enough time to make breakfast.

If you guys want to check out the dog and real life gumby. It's cute.

~Christina on here has recommended this a few times and I've used it when depressed or anxious about getting something done. Set a timer for fifteen minutes and do the thing you don't want to do for that much time. Then reward yourself for getting it done. When I'm very depressed I will clean for fifteen minutes then reward myself with "sitting around time" for a half hour or so. Then clean or do another chore for fifteen more minutes. You can handle doing fifteen minutes of an unwanted chore.

Want to clean mine too? Jk

You can do it! I have faith. The 15 minute timer (or picking a small area to tackle) works. I use it often. I find myself just wanting to sit on the couch and read on weekends. So I'll clean 15-20 minutes, then read the rest of the hour. Then keep doing that every hour until it's done. Might not be efficient but it gets the job done.

what you could do is look at what needs doing, make a list, and then each day just do 1 of those things

that way you're getting stuff done, and it's not overwelming because you're doing what you can manage
Thanks for this!
