I wish I could have an emotional support pet, since I have not found a pdoc or t who cares at all My extreme allergies prevent this.

I feel different, sometimes (like today) I feel undeserving of good.

I have had to give up a lot of things for something like ''stability''..

Today I feel sad and anxious (more than my ''usual''). Has anyone found the DBT concept of ''opposite action'' helpful?

A good friend in my forest is in therapy currently and has said the T has made several inappropriate comments I do not think this is ok My friend is not ''overly sensitive'' or ''paranoid''.. I do not understand why some professionals are like this. It's scary. Would you terminate with a therapist who has made inappropriate, invalidating comments, even though they might teach some skills? (or offer some rudimentary ''support'' until they tire of us?

I guess this thread is ''too boring'', It's not boring to me though. I only just recently realised how my need to read people as a child, as a necessary defence mechanism, has hurt me so much as an ''adult'' (and even others too at times)

What is the concept? I've never used it. I imagine maybe it includes assessing one's actions and then implementing the opposite to achieve some sort of balance?

If that is true... It conflicts with my philosophical beliefs a bit. I believe that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We don't control where that balance comes from, it happens on more of a universal level.

I'm not sure the opposite is always the goal. A lot of times I need to first find neutral and then step into something else from there. Jumping straight to the other pole is often too much of a leap and feels disingenuous.

All of this is assuming I have the concept somewhat correct. Admittedly, I've never heard of it.

And I didn't respond because I found this helpful per say, but because you're my pal and the question interested me. Our west coast US friends may be just waking up. Give it a little time.

I'm not sure about it either. I think some of DBT maybe does feel a bit disingenuous, But I have not studied much of it at all, so I could easily be wrong. Thanks for your reply fern

Blue Bird's article was helpful.

I stand by that comment. It may be able to fool my head and my emotions, but my heart always knows the truth. My heart is what screams when I am ill. Finding a way to make peace with it has been best for me.

I find with opposite action, the unhealthy side wants one thing and the healthy another, so I would be better to choose the healthy. Both are still actions that come from my desire.
