I seem to have a problem lately and it is becoming worse and worse as time goes by.
I do not like most of the people I sit around in my office building. I am not sure it is all them or some of me too. it is like every sound if the most irritating and annoying thing ever. I can't stand their small talk, the fakeness.

I just want to be left alone to do my work and that is all. Is this BPD or just me? It is a fight every morning just to get out of bed and get in to the office. The only thing that works lately is I need my paycheck.

Does anyone know if employers account for this as a medical issue to where we can get some accommodations for them? I really need it.

Do you work a type of job that you could do at home a day or two a week? Would your employeers possible go for that alternative? Can you get your desk moved farther away from the ones bothering you or otherwise change things up a bit so they won't bother you as much? Can you possibly take in a pair of headphones/earbuds to listen to music instead of them? Can you work different hours that wouldn't be with these people. Would you feel comfortable talking to your supervisors about the problems you're having? I know...more questions...but I'm trying to get a feel for your situation so maybe I can give better advice.
Thanks for this!

Ugh I feel the exact same way. There's a lady that sits directly next to my cubical that is so fake and "better than everyone else" that I often find myself screaming at her in my head shut the *&#@ up! I just like to seclude myself and do my work and get out of there

do you have an ipod or some sort of mp3 player to listen to before you enter your building so it cuts off the noise between going in and sitting at you desk.

I am currently at work at the moment and was just thinking and feeling the exact same thing. I too was wondering if it was me or the BPD as every single thing that everyone around me is saying is peeving me right off. I am angry and want everyone to be quiet. But at the same time I am uncomfortable with how angry and irritated I feel. I am very anti people today ( and have been of late) to the point were I dislike myself for dislike everyone so much.
I understand now you feel and I am glad I am not alone in feeling this way.

Yes I do and Yes I use them constantly and they are of little to no help.

It is a job where if they went for it I could so do from home very easily. And also if I weren't doing my job, you would know it. My clients and all would so definitely reach out if my tasks were not completed.
I can't get moved as we are packed with people as it is.
I do have headphones and use them constantly to no avail. I would have to spill it to my managers and I am not prepared to do that, not yet anyway. I could talk to HR but in the past those that have and have confided have regretted it painfully.

[I have had the same problem for some time now except it isn't just getting into work, it's getting to anything. Dr's appointments, meetings, classes i've paid for etc.etc. It is a big problem. It really is the reason I can't work even though I have a disability pension for I think Depression and BPD. I am taking classes at a local community college. They have a Disabilty Office to work out accomodations for students with disabilities. The one thing they will not make any accomodation for is showing up for class. So I can commiserate with you and say honestly it is not you, it is your brain. But unfortunately no one I have ever met including doctors has any sympathy for this symptom.

Look in to the Americans with Disabilities in the Workplace Act (or something similar) and see if an employer is required to make reasonable accomodations for people with this type of issue. I don't know if the law covers MH issues or not but it can't hurt to look and talk to your pdoc or therapist about it. If it does, consult with an atty or someone first (they offer free consultation a lot of the time) and go from there. It doesn't seem like it should be a bit deal if the accomodations could be made easily as you stated.

A lot of customer service/secretarial jobs are now at home. Look at this thread for more ideas: http://forums.psychcentral.com/work-...based-job.html. Sorry for the melt down in the middle...it was a bad day, but I'd be willing to help with further ideas or with your resume if you need it.

I didn't think of looking into that, thank you so much. I will use this approach. My check in is tomorrow so this is awesome timing. For once (lol).
And yes, any help would be nice. Let me gather what I have now and will PM you to get details and such. I am so grateful.

Oh and no worries on the meltdown, didn't think anything of it. I go through those all the time. You'll never have to apologize to me unless you do something to hurt me.

What about just regular ear plugs? I have foam ones that put most noise to just a dull murmur.

As for talking to your supervisor, you wouldn't have to spill. Just say that you need your quiet and that the people around you are disturbing you while you work. You don't have to tell them anything about your internal issues at all, as it is none of their business. If you are good at your job and don't have any issues with your supervisors, they should understand and be cool with it. (if this was not true at my job, i'd be in the market for a career change, but thankfully atm i work with a bunch of other people with problems who seem to understand if i'm having a bad day, haha)

I would be hesitant to ask for accomodations for anything like bpd. I mean if you frame it as though it has to do with noise an look for more isolation that might look better but even so, if you work in a cube farm, asking for special consideration for anything other than a physical ailment is going to start a buzz in your office. I'm not saying you don't deserve such things but the fact of life. I have a co worker, she has migraines and a problem with lighting. She tried to get us a separate office area that was more closed off (we work in the same group) but we couldn't even get that for her physical disability! And there are empty rooms here! o.O Anyway another thought is if you go out of your way to get accomodations, it might get you more attention than you want and that's the opposite of your goal. This is me speaking from experience, workign more than 20 years in offices with cube farms, just not typical to easily get special sections for much of anything aside from extreme physical disabilities that require it.

I would accomodate yourself by getting a set of headphones and ipod or phone to listen to music. Keep to yourself. I do.
Thanks for this!

I am a bookkeeper (AP, AR, payroll, etc.). I started my current job in June 2010 and in January 2013 I moved my office to my mom's home. I get a lot more done and because I'm on salary, I'm actually saving the company money because I'm not using any of their resources and I'm putting in extra hours. I work from my mom's home rather than mine because she and her husband have a second home in another state where they spend most of their time, and because I want my home life and work life completely separate, and because her home is within a mile from the office whereas my home is about 7 miles away from the office.

I encourage you to take this leap and ask your boss if it's an option...the worst that can happen is s/he will say no. I was ready to quit but my boyfriend suggested I first ask if I could work remotely.
Thanks for this!

I still have the email I wrote to my supervisors. I can send it to you if you'd like an idea of how to argue your case.

I didn't read the whole thread. But could you try really good earplugs and headset on top of that. This will cut down the noise and then interfere with it by overlaying other sound. Double effect.

If y ou're in a cube farm I totally sympathize!

Yep cube farm is us, so awful. I will look around for better noise reduction head phones and will seek what our handbook says about medical stuff. I am also going to talk to my therapist about it too. if I can get medical clearance at least just a day here and there when I really need it, that would be super helpful and better than I have now, which is just utter UGH.

Well no luck yet. I am still seeking assistance at work to deal. I am walking a fine line right now as the next step is for my dr to submit paperwork for accommodations. The only thing I fear now is backlash from my bosses if they get it from others who can't work from home as easy as I can. To me its none of their f'n business. But I work in a cube farm with idiots who like to cause trouble.

At some point I will look for new work but I do like the actual job I do and it pays well. And I swear if someone who has no clue comes to me and says one more time, suck it up, I may not be able to contain my anger.
