Are there any pro's on Norton Anti-Virus who can venture a guess as to why this is happening?
My scan started as per normal about a week ago. Half way through everything shut down. Everything. It took about 2 hours to get back on the net. Norton refused to open. I uninstalled and re-installed it. It now indicates that my scan was interrupted and that I should click to resume. Nothing happens when I click. Nothing happens when I click to scan via the normal route either. I changed the auto-run to a current time and watched and waited. Nothing happened. So while Norton is enabled, I don't seem to be getting any protection. I am also concerned that virus scans are not running. (Manual or otherwise) Any suggestions? (All live updates etc have been installed)

IDK but sounds like you should try and find the problem while running in safe mode. Maybe you have a trojan that is hacking away at your system?

yes, this is typical if you get a certain type of virus or spyware that causes norton to shut down.
Dont panic, usually it is easily fixable. Try restarting and tapping F8 this will either bring you into safe mode, or allow you to choose safe mode. Try running in that mode, and let me know what happens. |

what is your operating system . Have you treid system restore to one month before problem. bring up in safe mode then do the system restore. this does bring it back to no problem sometimes. or if you have a backup of your system you can restore that way. good luck if you have norton restore disk made it may bring itback that way also

Umm, if I fiddle with safe mode I might blow up my computer. I am a total dunce when it comes to stuff like this so really don't want to take a chance.
I might have to have someone come in and have a look at it! I am going to do a complete back-up later today though. This is my work computer as well and I simply can't afford to lose a thing. Thanks everyone!

Hey Sabrina...I hate to say...but get rid of norton anything...it's a system hog pprobably built for corporations than home users...and heaven forbid you should have go back...another part of norton that hogs system resources and basically holds your pc hostage...norton integrates itself into every part of your system and which you've found out won't let go that easily unless you are one of the people who built it...lol...seriously though a much smaller antivirus program maybe what you need rather than trying to figure out norton... avg antivirus is a good program and it's free...you will also need a good firewall... zone alarm ...this is just the firewall and it's good...but if you are set on norton then here is a link to their support pages... norton antivirus ...it's not that norton is bad mind you it's just that it is a very big program and easy to screw up...short story here...I knew a guy who knew a guy who was friends with a guy who used norton... everything was good and he was so happy with it...but soon he was running out of space and memory problems started happening...it seems the noton antivirus was sucking up every bit of memory on his system and then there was go back...this quinte part of norton would take a backup every time he did something with his pc...of course you can bend norton to do what you want but unless your a pc geek then it really is not for everyone...but thats just me...lol...I know not much help at all...

Thanks Mystry - very helpful indeed!
Actually, you are not the first to advise against Norton. I have infact just finished uninstalling it and installing McAfee. I ran a scan and a number of infected files were found. Even though I cleaned them, McAfee says no action was taken - but that's another days bother. Perhaps a number of issues that I have had will lessen now that Norton is off. (Speed being one of them). I will bookmark avg just in case this McAfee doesn't come to the party. Thanks again for your advice.

I didn't encounter any problems when uninstalling norton, so I hope it hasn't left hidden things on my system.
Thanks so much Mystry.

with norton you can almost be positive it has left things all over your system...but I don't think what is left will harm your system...if you use an app like regseeker you can find whatever is left of it...but it might be a better idea to just leave it until you run into problems...if you run into any...remember pm me if you do...

I absolutely will remember! Thanks again Mystry - I really appreciate your support and expertise!
As for McAfee - so far not so good. Ever since installing I have lost my internet connection twice. I have had to restart twice and everything is so sloooowww! I will check out the uninstalling link as I don't like having stuff on my system that doesn't 'belong' anymore! Sigh - wish I understood all this technical jumbo!

your slowing down because of A) your memeory or B) your processor...my guess would be that it is a memory problem...try defragging the system and see if that helps...there is a program that is good for defragging your memory too... memturbo 2 ...it is a 30 day trial...oh and if you don't like things being left on your system then try this uninstaller... your uninstaller ...it's a trial too 21 days but if you like it you can purchase it...boy I hope I'm not going overboard with all these applications Sabrina...

I personally like the stuff from Lava Soft...freebies. I have had Norton (previous computer) and now McAfee... and lavasoft finds stuff they didn't clean. Norton always did better than McAfee back then, though.
XP has what you might need, though. Click on your START, then ALL PROGRAMS then ACCESSORIES then SYSTEM TOOLS and there will be a listing... defrags, cleanups, restore etc. My systems (both home and prof) also have compressors and analyzers... maybe if you look around on yours Sabrina, you'll find more goodies ![]()

Thanks sleeps.
Well, I almost re-installed Norton!! McAfee has slowed my system down to near shut down. It detects something every 20 minutes or so and it takes about 4 tries to get it any website. Pages are pesistantly unable to display, particularly if it is bookmarked. So - out with the McAfee and in with AVG. Rainbowzz - I ran FreeRam XP. I am not sure what the final result was. It ran for more than 15 hours though. Sky - thanks for the tips. I defrag and system clean up so regularly I really should not be experiencing operating problems like this. Anyway - I shall endure..

yup, its supposed to run all the time.
What it does is constantly monitor your ram(memory) and optimizes it when it sees it is getting low(this can happen from programs no longer needed still running in memory after shutdown) |

Did you use the lava soft ad-aware SE also? (free-always!) You know, I assumed that you went to Norton and McAfee websites and logged the problem. They have these problems all along, and I'm sure if there is a problem with either program, they will also have the solution.

Thanks Sky. I have had Ad-aware for some time.
I run it daily, and daily it picks up about 15 critical errors. ![]() ![]()
