I have hit a rough patch right now. I have zero motivation to go outside and do anything. I have even put off grocery shopping and other important things. All I have been doing this week is sleeping, having one meal a day, drinking water, watching tv, and of course the Internet.

I just feel rather low and worthless right now. I don't feel happy or content anymore. In fact I cannot remember the last time I felt happy or content.

The weather is lovely where I live but I still don't want to go outside. I will force myself to go to the grocery store on Saturday.

How do I get the motivation or desire to want to go outside rather than I need to go outside?

I'm sorry you feel so down and hope you feel better soon...

In a way you answered your own question; "I have hit a rough patch right now."
We know it will pass but it's awfully hard waiting for it to ease off...
Perhaps forcing yourself to go to the grocer's and getting outside and away from those four walls and into the sun will break the cycle.
Sometimes that works for me.

Best wishes,

Catherine

Sometimes motivation comes with actions... I notice this with myself: I never feel like going out, but when I bring myself to do it then I'd actually lke to stay out some more and I stop somewhere on the way home or take the long road etc.
I know it's not easy, but try to do it anyway. I hope you start enjoying it after a while...

Take care (and eat more than once a day!)

in my experience, you don't make it happens. You work at making it possible to happen. And then it does. Keep working at it, sorry you're having such a hard time right now

I know the feeling . There will be better days ahead for sure
You just have to clear the rough patch which can take some
time. I would try to eat more though to keep your strength up.
Take care of yourself and get better soon

I am sorry you are having a tough time right now. Hang in there because things will change and you will have days you feel better. Hopefully soon.

My only suggestion is try to do something fun every single day. Listen to a song, or read a favorite magazine or just plan ahead to watch a show you like on TV. May I suggest Spongebob Squarepants?

That helps me on my down days to realize that though I feel like crap I can still choose to do something I enjoy even if it is only for fifteen minutes.

Hang in there pal! I certainly know the feeling. Perhaps you can try reading something good. There's a lot of powerful books out there that can make you feel good. Also, after you finish whatever you read, there's a sense of accomplishment and you will be motivated by it. Good luck. All is well.

I understand how you feel and the feeling of not wanting to get out. For me I just have to go and try to take steps eeryday to get out the door. It is very hard when you do not feel like it and when everything feels so out of place but this will pass. Know we are here for you and care. We are listening and will be here to help you through this. Sending you a gentle hug if that is okay.

I know exactly how you feel.
I'm in the same boat.
Since May- I hardly ever leave the house- I'm to depressed and exhausted. I have zero motivation. I've just been sleeping, eating, watching tv and going online- even that seems to much to handle on a daily basis. I only leave the house 1 - 2 times a week- for errands.
Thanks for this!

i could have written zen's original post and this one too. is it fear or fatigue? it feels like fatigue but even more like fear. the odd thing is, when i absolutely have to go out, i often enjoy it (although the whole time looking forward to coming home), but even just the anticipation of going out saps the life out of me. people can be exhausting. isn't that actually true?

good for you for planning your three outings. i know how difficult it is. if you find you can enjoy them, maybe it will snap a cycle.

YAAAAAY!!! Way to go, Zen888! That's a good idea, too... planning on doing something 3 days during the week. Doesn't sound too overwhelming, and the benefits will be wonderful. Good thinking! I'm going to try that, too.

When I feel super apathetic and unmotivated, I FORCE my pathetic butt to do stuff. It's quite difficult and you have to try to lift your mood at the same time. Some stuff that helps is

-taking a walk
-cleaning up a bit (sense of orderliness=happier)
-exercise (running, once you're out and away from house, you have to keep going haha)
-reading (escape to another world)

Don't forget to eat. Eating right can affect your mood.
Thanks for this!

It's fatigue and fear.
Just me getting ready is exhausting enough.
Yes, people can be exhausting too.

Ok-you need to find the biggest bucket you have, fill it w/ ice water...and then quickly plunge head into it and yank it back out.
I know, I'm an ***. Please laugh.
I could be wrong, but in some cases, where life becomes unbearably, intolerably boring...do you think we invent an impossible challenge for ourselves? The thought of having nothing to look forward to, maybe nothing that's going to yield an achievement or reward ('cus some of us have mental wiring that absolutely needs productive challanges to remain healthy)our brains will compensate w/ some 'insurmountable problem', like not being able to go out doors? Or, maybe the reason could be more emotional, more along the lines of a caretaker vacancy, say, someone leaving the nest? Just plain, old grief? (I'm wondering why your self image in public is evidently taking a hit).
This is why that 'ole journal tool comes into play in a useful way. If you could go back and pin point the events of the day it happened.
Can you call somebody on the phone? People get busy and forget to make contacts, and sometimes we need someone to come knock on our door and validate that we do exist.
People don't mean to indifferent most times; I think even the sound of another human voice will get you out of your house sooner. There have been very few times where I dialed up a relative, or someone who I hadn't talked to for a long time where we didn't end up having a delightful conversation. Long distance can be priceless.
