I just wanted to get others thoughts on something that happened to me the other morning. It has been bothering me yet made me think.
I was talking to an ex girlfirend. We have stayed friends for the most part and sometimes confide in each other with issues each of us have. Anyway, i was telling her about how my depression seems to be getting really bad and she agreed I'm depressed alot. I mentioned how I'm going to the doctors to try to get help and for some reason this set her off. She then told me I was a head case and she was glad I left her. Then she said I dont need meds to deal with my problems. It really hurt that she responded like that and it made me angry towards her that she would say that. At the same time its put doubts in my head about getting help. Sometimes I just dont know what to think :/ |

Methinks the best thing to do is let a profesional that knows about depression make that decision. Who knows why your ex-girlfriend responded that way. Maybe it touched a nerve in her.

I wouldn't take it to heart what she said. She obviously did not respond with kindness or caring. I would continue finding the help you feel you need so that you get better.
People can think or say what they want but you know how you feel and you know what you need. Hugs, Heidu The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it. John Ruskin

I have found that people do react to you differently because your illness is depression. There is still a stigma despite overwhleming evidence that it is casued by a chemical imbalance. I think that one's personal character and strength comes into question. The riony is that when we are depressed we need the love and support of those around us more than ever. Hang in there, maybe she will come around.

oh you poor thing! I think that most people still view depression as somehow the fault of the sufferer, even though its not. If you'd had, say a broken leg, she wouldn't be telling you that you didn't need to get it put in plaster or have painkillers would she?
Anyway, i agree that maybe it touched a raw nerve in her - so many people think "there but for the grace of god go i..." when they're confronted with depressed people. That's her insecurity and not your fault. Try not to let it get you down mate - we've all been there. Go get the help you need. Good luck and let me know how you get on Mildred |
