Tonite as I was driving back to my house from a local grocery store, on a dark country road, in a flash, a deer came running across the road, we collided, and my heart is broken, though it was an accident, and it was, I wasn't speeding either, I still feel so horrible, some of you that already know me know how much I love animals and would never harm them, so this loss to her herd, is yet another loss in my heart
Local townspeople and the police were a huge help and provided me comfort while I was emotionally losing it in the middle of the road, the car is damaged but that isn't my concern, it can be repaired but this creature's life is over and that can't be repaired. Out of this nightmare I saw that there still are good people that do not turn their heads away, instead they came out of their homes and helped me, and I thank them over and over in my heart.
Do you think if I post a note of thanks to the strangers that helped me on "such and such" road on the evening of 10/6/03 on the grocery store's public bulletin board they will eventually see it? I think they would cause that the only local grocery store and everyone goes there sooner or later.
I am grateful how they helped compose me, I can't sleep right now the visions are still fresh in my mind and it is haunting my heart
If any of you have been through this would you please share some words of encouragmment in regards as to getting behind the wheel again, regaining confidence, etc.
All I can do is hope that the deer community will forgive me.
Thanks,
"darkeyes"

I can imagine how bad it must feel... I love prarie dogs and they're always running all over the road and getting hit. I've had a few close calls with them, and squirrels, dogs... My heart leaps every time it almost happens and I thank God so much when I see them in my mirror, safe....

For me, I think it reminds me of the preciousness of life... accidents do happen, I think the deer herd would forgive you, they are loving creatures as much as we humans, possibly more so. I don't think they'd believe you'd done it on purpose.

I think posting a thank you is a fine idea, or if you have a local paper, a thank you ad... rest easy dear one, forgive yourself, you had no bad intent....

It's horrible to hit an animal. I know the sick feeling you are having. The deer community will forgive you.
It's a good idea to post something at the grocery store or in the local paper if you want to thank people.

Hugs,

I am so sorry Darkeyes that you went through this. I hit a porcupine one evening and could not even continue my drive...it is an awful feeling and I know you are hurting.

It would be nice to place a thank you...I am sure they would appreciate it and you would feel better doing that as well.

Take care

Thanks so much for your kind words everyone, it has helped so much. Doesn't it irk you when some will say, "it was just an animal". . .? I know that may be the only way they know to be of help, but in my heart it hurts when any animal gets themselves into these sort of accidents.
I am going to compose a letter of thanks to the people last nite that helped, especially the man that came out of his house to help me, and have some of the men move the poor thing off to the side, I was running out near it waving my arms to caution people away from it, it is bad enough it was dead or near death but to be smooshed would have been a double tragedy in my memory. Too bad our brains can't lose memory of horrific images the way it fails us when we misplace our glasses, car keys and the things we put in a "safe place", so safe, we forget where, right?
I ccan't stress enough how ALL of you who replied here and in PM's last nite have helped, I thank you all as well as the people on the road at the scene of the accident.
I am so very careful of the night and things darting out in front of me, I guess there are times that we can't have total control over and yes, accidents do happen.
Thanks for all of your kind words

Im sorry you such a bad after the accident. Big hug dark eyes. I try to think of the smaller animals that the one who died are now keeping alive. All the way down the line to the little bugs. This is nature even if us humans have caused it. Chin up it was an accident. Nursenessa

I'm so sorry, ((((((Darkeyes)))))) - that happened to me once, and I felt very badly about it even though I, too, knew that I couldn't have prevented it... Hang in there, and talk to us more about it if you want/need to - it helps! Most fondly, Peanut

{{{{{{{{Darkeyes}}}}}}}}}}}}} I am sorry. I know what it feels like, and when hunting season starts up, I feel horrible - I think of Bambi.

It wasn't your fault - sometimes roads are so dark, and they jump in front of cars so quickly. I am glad that you were not injured yourself though.

Posting that note in the store would be so sweet - I'm sure they would appreciate it immensely.

I hope you feel better soon. No matter how careful you are, unfortunately things happen.

Take care.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. It must be so hard to deal with. Know that this was not anyone's fault, and that your compassion to feel so much for the deer is wonderful. I think that either a note in the grocery store or in the paper would be a great idea. Isn't it nice that there still are people who care around? Society needs to acknowledge people like that who are willing to stop and help someone in need.

Well, I delivered my heartfelt thanks printouts and posted them at the local grocery store close to where it happened, put one in each of the 2 mailboxes across the road from the houses of where those came out to assist me and one I handed to the police at the station when I drove back yesterday to pick up a copy of the report.
Happy to say, 2 unknown people that read the note in which I did close with my name, called me on the phone to ask "how are you"? read your note looked up your number and called, we were thinking of you
Wow, it feels good when there are some people left on this planet that care
A neighbor who is friends of a county cop told him when there is a "freshkill" they do pick it up (and they were doing so as I pulled away) bring it into a processor (which we have a few places around that butcher the carcass) the meat is all cut and packaged then brought to a food locker for the neighboring homeless shelters.
Hearing that kind of lifted the pain a teeny bit.
Just thought I'd share this with all of you, something a "little
lighter" than the nightmare that took place here, at our forums this week, hope all can be over with and all of us can move on or out if so wish to.
Take care have a safe weekend,
"darkeyes"

HI darkeyes. I don't really know what to do when the forum is in an upheaval. I'm glad you posted here so I can talk about something else with you. I do better if I can move onto another subject... kinda like the fresh start idea I guess. I would have been in a state like you if I had hit and killed a deer. I'm glad they put the meat to good use. I hit a dog once and nearly fainted. My friends in the car had to pick me up and shake me a little to keep me from keeling over. It's just a horrible thing for an animal lover to experience. Let alone what the animal experiences!

Glad we made it through the last chapter and are into a new one on the forum today. Whew!

You friend,
Willow

I am so sorry you are feeling so badly... I was coming home from work one night and hit a mom and baby... I missed the other baby that was with them. I felt awful at the thought that that baby was without a mom even though they were old enough to take care of themselves.

Less then a week later I hit another deer...no babies this time but the feeling was still the same. It was two years ago but that thought is still there every time I have to drive at night when I go home to visit two hours from here.

The thought, the fears and now it is like instant "re-play" when I try to sleep I get the "chills" when I drive past that part down the road where it happened the hard part is that I have to use that road to get to my house, so now I face the guilt everyday, though it was an accident I am still having a hard time with it.
Maybe once the repairs are made to the car I won't have an additional reminder stearing (sp?) me in the face, I hope>
Thanks for your reply

I hit a deer too last august. I can still see those eyes looking at me before I hit. I would have changed places with him at that moment. I understand your guilt.
It was my third time that I hit a deer. There is a lot of deers where I live and they cross the road a lot. Hubby was mad at me because I had damaged the car another time. Sometime there is things in life that we do not understand.

Take good care!
