I'm just intrested to see if anyone else suffers with this. I find people dismiss it and say things like oh it's your period get over it, but feeling suicidal isn't normal, I know this as I know many women who don't suffer like I do.
I have other problems too with anxiety etc but the pmdd is a nightmare.

Hi ObscureAngel. I know what you are talking about. I used to get horrible PMS and would just cry for days before my period. Then one time I met a woman who changed my life forever. She told me about how calcium is so important in a woman's life. She said that if I took 3 grams of calcium starting 3 days ( I think) or 1 week ( it's been several decades ago) before my period I would not have those feelings. I took her advice and after several months I ceased to have PMS even without the calcium. I never had it since then. I've been through menopause also and never had but one symptom--hot flashes.
I think now they recommend calcium and magnesium together.
Better google it to get the correct information but I cannot express to you how wonderful it was for me. I remember that she gave me some calcium at the time we were talking and my muscles relaxed so much I had to sit down! Calcium is responsible for many muscle reactions and has a role to play in our emotions. Just kind of go carefully since too much calcium can contribute to kidney stones.
So try it. It sure helped me.
Let me know if it helps. Good luck
Thanks for this!

Pms is a bit different pmdd stands for pre menstrual disphoric disorder. It's not just the usual blues it's far deeper. However I will deffo look into the calcium thing. I'll try anything. Apple cider vinegar is also good :-)

Hello. I am now 55 years old and menopausal. However, when I was younger, I had terrible PMDD. It got worse and worse as I approached menopause. From the time I was 45 until I was 52 or so, I was practically suicidal every month. For two weeks out of every month, I had multiple severe night sweats every night, and got no real sleep. This made me so depressed and irrational I was nearly psychotic and could hardly do my job. Lots of days I called in sick, because I was really incapable of functioning. When I got my period, I would suddenly feel all right again, be able to sleep, and the night sweats would cease...for about two weeks, until I ovulated again, and then the nightmare would start all over. Doctors were no help. They all wanted to put me on hormone replacement therapy, but it made me worse and not better. I knew in advance that it would not work, since, even when I was younger, birth control pills always made me depressed and ill. You have my sincere sympathy.
Thanks for this!

That sounds awful and exactly my life... It sounds silly but I find great comfort just knowing there is another soul that can identify. Hormones are so evil and people just don't get it, doctors especially! I hope your life is calm and peaceful now

I would talk to my gynecologist or primary care physician and see what treatment options are available for PMDD that might work for me: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Treatments and drugs - MayoClinic.com

I suspect I have PMDD. I have had anxiety/panic since my late teens, but for the past few years, my cycle has become a living hell. Some months are better than others. It seems to be every other month for me right now.

It gets so bad for me that I have all day panic attacks. The intensity ebbs and flows, but the anxiety is constant for several hours. I am exhausted, yet still edgy and nervous. I experience the normal anxiety symptoms, like rapid heartbeat, racing thoughts, but also a few new ones: depersonalization and strange nerve pain.

I am considering trying Prozac. My gyno has suggested it before. You take a low dose for 10 days before your period instead of taking it all month. I have not done well with AD in the past, but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Good luck with the prozac. Many people take to it but I didn't. I have just been prescribed fluanoxl as I wanted something to work much quicker than prozac plus this works for both depression and anxiety unlike prozac. I haven't tried it yet as I'm nervous of it.
Your symptoms echo mine. Let me know how it goes

I dont think it goes unnoticed. My 2nd h said he wanted to move to a motel for one week every month. I used to hang a happy face / flipover sad face sign on my cubicle wall at work (like they have to indicate clean or dirty dishes?).

Hi Obscure-Angel

I also have had trouble with extreme emotions before menstruation. It took me over twenty years of complaining, but the doctors found that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. At first they prescribed birth control pills which made me feel angry and suicidal ALL THE TIME. I switched off the hormone pills and was prescribed a diabetic medicine to prevent the cysts from forming on my ovaries, which seemed to help with whatever you want to call the emotional pain I associate with the time before my period. I was still having problems, so my doctors inserted an intra-uterine device (IUD) that is made of plastic and imbedded with synthetic progesterone. This has helped me just a little bit more, so that I don't seem to be bothered as much with "that time of the month." An added bonus is that my period is very light and very brief now. I suggest you may also have ovarian cysts or another physical problem that may be complicating your premenstrual cycle and ask your doctor to screen you for it.

I am still diagnosed with "chronic major depression" but find life more tolerable after having dealt with my menstrual issues.
Thanks for this!

I too suffered with PMDD after my tubes were tied. The week prior to my period I was a raging b****! I screamed, I cried, I slept and was soo mean. Then my period would start and I was back to normal. My periods were horrible and lasted 7-10 days and I had severe cramps. So over half the month I was dealing w my period. And my cycle was every 21 days. Very rarely I would go 28 days. I saw a gyn and begged for a hysterectomy but he said I was too young! I was in my late 20's and my tubes were tied. He did give me some sort of shot every month that stopped my periods but he can only do it for six month. Best six months ever. I also saw a pdoc and was prescribe prozac and while on it my periods were do able. But eventually I lost my job and insurance. I'm 47 now and may have a day of spotting twice a year. I had horrible hot flashes last summer but those have tapered off. One Dr says I'm in pre menopause, while my other Dr says I'm in menopause. I have estrogen should I need them but I haven't.

I suffered from pmdd.... I had a full hysterectomy in my early 30's (had 2 kids already) to battle it! It made a tremendous difference in my life! I know that is not an option for everyone.

I am 50 years old.

About 3 yrs ago... I had noticed that for the last few years, my emotions and temper went haywire in the middle of my menstrual cycle. It seemed to get progressively worse. EVERYTHING got "under my skin". I would try to keep to myself as much as possible until it passed. It finally got to the point that even I didn't want to spend time with myself. I made an appointment with my gynecologist & he prescribed a low dose of Prozac. I was feeling better, but not quite "there" yet. I followed up with him in 6 months as Instructed. When I told him that I felt like the dosage needed to be adjusted, he referred me to a psychiatrist.
