okay, so basically im a pretty good student. im almost finished with my first year of high school, and everything seems great. last year, i got a letter home from my teachers saying i was selected to participate in this convention for students with potential in undergoing high society pofessions, and i couldnt go because money was so tight. eventually i got over it, but my mom called today and said i got recommended again. i was immediantly stoked, but im in the same delema. it sucks, cause i know i just cant go and pull fifteen hundred dollars out of my butt. i mean, obviously i have potential, and obviously i think i can acheive, and obviously people think i can do something with my life, but i wont ever happen. im just really upset, devastated actually. i mean, i feel like my life isnt ever going to go anywhere. i guess money is the secret to happiness. uhh.. im so beyond frustrated. im trying to look happy, for my dad. i mean, i should be proud of myself for being selected, its a big thing, but it means nothing. nothing.

Aw bummer. You can contact the local news stations and (email) your dilemma... they may have resources or even tout it as a human interest story and run it....
What about any organizations you belong to? Some of them have scholarships, but they might also have funding for bright students like you... American Business Woman's Association is one I used to be with...also the Girl Scouts have something for their members... See if you school counselor has any ideas or resources... be a pest...ask! ask! ask!

Those are great ideas Sky ... and I would also suggest calling your local hometown newspaper....very often they will run a human interest story like this and many folks who believe education is important are happy to help.
Another suggestion....if you have any neighborhood grocery or convenient stores, you can always ask them if you can put a canister at their register with a note saying why you are looking for donations...very often people will plop their coin change in and money can add up quickly. Wishing you much luck and I really hope you get a chance to go! ![]() sabby |

I'm interested in the details. Now, it says "your selected to participate in a convention..." I work in the computer field. If I get those selections - it's because someone is selling something. Find out if this is "for real" or if 1/2 the class got this "selection". I'd be a bit worried that the school is just trying to sell seats at this convention and gets kick-back on the seats sold rather than being some value for the students. If the school is selecting students, they should also offer a way to pay for students they "select" who cannot afford to go. It's not a crime to not be able to afford such a trip - in today's economy with high gas prices, food costs and family costs - what school thinks a parent can afford some $1500 conference? I make good money and couldn't afford to send my kid(s) on a conference lke that.
So, don't worry about it too much. In fact, it could just be some school-based money-maker (like high-priced girl scout cookies). Or it could be legit but be careful about falling for stuff like this - conferences are not all they're cracked up to be. I've been to a number of them and for us older folks, we go to them mainly to see if we can get in a few rounds of golf at the location we're going.

Hey. If the letter came from your teachers, I suggest you go and talk with your teachers. Tell them that you don't have the money but really want to go. Ask if there is anyway you can get a scholarship or if the school can help pay that you would be willing to do a report or a presentation on your experience.
Sometimes, schools have "money" for needy kids. Like Sky said.....ASK! |

I was skeptical too. Fifteen hundred dollars is a lot. Is this on the level? On the other hand, if this came from teachers, why don't you talk to them and see if there's a scholarship available.
Oh, by the way, what are high society professions? Not this, I hope. http://jobs.gapyear.com/jobs/event_j...h_society.html |
