I am so upset right now. I just came out of choir and am frustrated with the teacher. He is taking a psychology course which he has to read this book for. The book is essays written by all sorts of people who are explaining their problems and all the things they have to go through. I wish I was more capable of expressing my feelings like that, but I don't. One reason is because of people like him. He was telling the class how he thinks that they are all selfish, self indulged, egotistical idiots who just want people to feel sorry for them because they deal with all these problems that everyone else goes through. It really upset me and I'm amazed I managed to keep myself under control.
Later in the class someone made an ignorant comment about bipolar in the class and one of my friends suffers from that and is also in the class and it upset them. Why do people make such ignorant coments?

Because they are ignorant.

People find it hard to understand an illness when they can't see the symptoms. I don't think you can fully understand it unless you have been thru it.

It makes me angry too, when people make irresponsible comments like that - but I wouldn't wish this illness on them.

Don't be angry too long, think about something nice that someone has said to you recently or you have read - don't let it get to you too much.

Peace, x

I try to feel sorry for them because of their ignorance and fear, the best thing that could happen is that they walk in our shoes

Hi Dog -- The first answer says it all -- People make ignorant comments because they are -- ignorant.

I would never wish to have them deal with what we go throygh I just wish there was another way for them to understand. In my psych class we have moved in to studying different disorders and my teacher had to explain to the class what a panic attack feels like. Sometimes I forget that not everyone experiences those. Maybe I'm the ignorant one....Any opinions

I think I'd bring it up with the admin. I'm sure you could keep annonymous, but that arse deserves to have his but chewed off.

And no, you aren't the ignorant one. If people don't know exactly what it's like, they don't have a place anyway to say anything about what they don't have any experience in! I wonder if I make sense. XD Haha.

Hope you aren't too upset with him. TT__TT Even if he deserves it, being peeved makes learning difficult.

Trick is, learn a foreign language, like Korean or something that not a lot of people will know. Then, you can curse him out without them knowing. ^___^

*hug* I'm proud of you for not saying anything mean to him about it. I'd of, and I'd of probably gottan thrown out of the class. ^_^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

I certainly hope that this choir teacher is not thinking of becoming a psychologist! What an ignorant attitude that shows a complete lack of empathy for things he does not understand! Give yourself the courage for being mad yet controlling your response - although I agree he needs to be reported somehow perhaps to the teacher of the psychology course he is taking, at least. Good work with your own control. Remember, you have a good heart and try not to let those who are so ignorant attach their labels on to you.

Hey Dog -- Those who say to report this man are legally correct, if you are in the U.S. I've had to take 2 diversity trainings for educational institutions in the past month.

It is illegal to create a hostile environment for students, workers, etc, in a public place. This means things as seemingly mild as having a suggestive photo as a one's screen saver, telling dirty jokes that might be overheard by someone who feels uncomfortable with that kind of talk, racial and ethnic slurs. If you are in the U.S., physical and mental disabilities would fall into the "protected" category.

It will take a lot of courage to do this. I honestly am not sure that I would. Because I'm not sure that I would want to disclose this about myself in an environment that is already ignorant and hostile. But it is the right thing to do and court decisions are on your side in the U.S.

Maybe this choir teacher isn't taking a psychology course, but sensitivity training that was imposed on him. It would seem he needs it, right? If not, I hope it does become a requirement for him.

Thank you guys so much. It is nice to know that there are people and the law on my side. I asked him later if he would not talk about psychology in the class and he said he wouldn't. As long as he sticks with that decision I will drop it and won't talk to any of his authorities. Thank You so much!!!! Trig

it is out of ignorance that these comments are made. however, even more prevailent is the fear they have, i think. they fear what they don't understand, also some fear what they don't want to name in themselves Trig

it's sad no matter how it's looked at. i'm so sorry you and your friend suffered.
