I hate having to wonder every time I eat something new is this going to make me sick. I read the label on my new cereal and still got sick. I feel like a mac truck hit me. I emailed the company to see if their cereal is gluten free and they told me that their cereal isn't gluten free. Why is it that I am stuck with either bland cereal or cereal that is very expensive? I hate being gluten intolerant. I can't and won't go back to eating gluten just to see if I am celiac plus the blood test came back normal so who's to say the other tests won't come back the same way too. Plus I am doing so good just not eating gluten so we know gluten is the problem. I am just so frustrated that I can't branch out and be creative in my eating.

Jan,
I am so sorry about this. I know where you are. I come and go from this place myself. Just so you know Trix are gluten free. I just had my first box since being a kid last week. I ate almost the whole box in two days. Fruity pebbles are also gluten free. The flavored Chex mixes and the Rice Chex and Corn Chex are gluten free. These are the main stream cereals that I know of that are gluten free. Have you checked out any of the gluten free cook books. There are some good ones out there. I haven't invested in any of them yet. But I know there are people who really like them. I think that would help you branch out more. I know when I first started I was very limited in what I ate, and have now branched out some.

Have you seen these lists:

Safe Gluten Free foods/ingredients list:
http://www.celiac.com/articles/181/1...nts/Page1.html

Unsafe Gluten Free foods/ingredients list:
http://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1...nts/Page1.html

These lists will help you figure out what foods are safe and what are not. Some of the ingredients are obvious (things that list wheat) whereas some of them are not obvious at all. When I first started shopping for gluten free items, and now when I want to try something new, I would take these lists with me to help me decide what was safe and what was not. I hope these help you find safe foods to eat. Plus I just find www.celiac.com very helpful in all of their information and their message board.
Thanks for this!

I got an email from Post (the makers of Fruity Pebbles) stating that their cereal is not gluten free. It is Cupcake Pebbles that is making me so sick. I had box of the generic kind and didn't get sick but we shopped at a different store this week and their version said on the box it could contain wheat.

Post said that while their cereal is made on a dedicated line their factories are not totally gluten free. So I guess that explains why I am so sick.

I will have to get some of the flavored Chex cereals because I don't like the plain ones except in Chex mix.

Switch to a whole grain like oatmeal. Oats don't, themselves, have gluten but they may have been processed in a factory that was processing wheat (kind of like the whole peanut thing now where you can't buy any other nut without being told it might have peanuts in it) so you can try a brand and see how it is for you (not Quaker, they load in salt and other stuff, I use McCann's) before you go to the work of trying for one certified gluten free that might be more expensive. I don't think any of the commercial brands of regular cereal (Post, Kellogg's, General Mills) are going to be gluten free?

Well it happened again. I got "glutened". Mom and I went out to lunch at a place that I thought would be safe..Steak n Shake. We had coupons and I asked the server about the french fries and opted not to have them as they are fried with all the other fried foods. Didn't ask what was sprinkled on the burgers for flavoring BIG MISTAKE. I am sick again .

I was supposed to have a fun night out with my Aunt and we were going to go see the new Facebook movie and then out to eat. I haven't been to the movies in ages and was looking forward to it. Now I am stuck being at home being sick. I remember commenting to mom that boy these mushrooms sure are salty and that was that. I even got the burger without the bun thinking I would be safe.

Makes me want to never eat out ever again. I know that isn't rational thinking because it doesn't happen very often. I did email the company though about the service because the service we got was nasty. So we will see what comes of it.

Oats are not a good bet for being gluten free. They are often transported and processed in the same facilities as wheat is. Also it is used as a crop that is rotated, so often it is planted on land that grew wheat and so gets it in it that way. Only go with certified gluten free oats if you eat them.

I'm so sorry about you getting sick eating out. I've only eaten out a handful of times (and only once for fun) since I was diagnosed a little over a year ago because of my fear of getting ill. I'm so sorry you got sick. That really sucks.

I actually went out yesterday and didn't get sick. WOOHOO!! It was even to an Italian resturant. I knew pretty much ahead of time what I was going to order because I went online and printed out their gluten free menu and took it with me.

As soon as I started to make my order our waiter said oh gluten free. I said yes and he said my Uncle is like that and made sure my order was made right. Last time we ate there was a piece of pasta on my plate but I wasn't far enough out to make me sick. I now get sick if I even get a little gluten.

I am going to email the company about my pleasant experience.

I had joined a website for people with my situation and have been getting lamblasted every time I make a mistake. An example is on Sunday I went out to eat with my family like I do every Sunday and on this site they tell me not to eat out but I have to or pay the price with my family anyway..I ordered pasta alfredo not even thinking about the pasta part. Of course I got sick and remembered there is a reason I don't eat gluten. I think they might have thickened the alfredo part with flour also. Anyway I want to belong to a group for people with my needs but don't want to get bashed when I make a mistake.

I feel bullied and feel just like I did when I was in school and the popular kids would make fun of me.

How do I deal with this?

Jan

Do you belong to GIG? There's a literal central Arkansas (Little Rock) group and it has a website with newsletter, recipes, etc. http://www.centralarkansasgig.org/
