I have been triggered like crazy this past week. I keep having nightmares and dissociating and getting lost in my memories. I have been sick and terrified about staying in bed because it gives me time to think and my old problems are coming back.

How do people here deal with flashbacks?

Things to keep in mind when interacting with me:
1. Do not try to medicate me. I am not on medication for a very good reason.
2. I don't do hugs.
3. If I ask for help, it is because I am at the breaking point, otherwise I have a bad habit of keeping quiet. Please do not brush me off.

Have you discussed this with your therapist? It sounds like you have a lot to talk about.

Luckily my next appt. is on Monday. I am worried about getting there though as I still am not allowed to drive due to balance issues.

I deal with flashbacks in many different ways but they all boil down to self nurturing/taking care of myself/grounding...

take a bath, smell apples and cinnamon, breathing, yoga, ,meditation, weight lifting, spend some time looking at my children, having my wife hold me, listen to calming music, painting, writing, sewing, what ever happens to calm me down and ground me back in the present moment.

maybe you can read some of your past posts and that will give you an example of some things you like to do, things that are calming to you...

maybe you and your therapist can make a list of calming/grounding things for you to do..

Yeah, I am REALLY bad at self-care. I am quite known for running myself into the ground so I need to learn that

I spent decades working two and three jobs just so I wasn't alone with myself. Even now that I am not working I will do anything to distract myself from being alone with myself. When I don't have a distraction I feel fear mostly than anxiety than sometimes I start to get lost in my head. If I don't have something to focus on I feel like I am floating and not fixed. It's hard to describe. I am now trying to be good to me and my body, eating better and not pushing my body and mind beyond reason. It's a change but we do feel better, less frantic. Take care of yourself.
Thanks for this!

I try to ground myself in the present with the 5 senses but sometimes that doesn't work. One thing that helps me is watching nature videos -- there's a series called Moving Art that is just scenes of nature and time-lapse flowers and stuff with music and I find it very calming. Even if I'm dissociating, it brings some comfort.

That sounds like it would be terrifying for me but I'll have a look

After disocciating for about a week I was able to sleep in the same bed as my bf last night so I'm improving.
I have decided that my house is a toxic environment so my housemate needs to leave and I have figured out how and am angry enough that I'm not afraid anymore. So wish me luck....
