rofl I have to.
I'm Scotch Irish. Genetically, I should be able to drink a bar out of business. I don't drink whatsoever. And I hate the bagpipe too. ![]() I'm also from the South. I have no accent (minus a few words or when I'm speaking fast...curse you "drawer!!!"), I hate trucks, I hate country (minus Johnny Cash), and my furniture is in my house, not my front lawn. ![]() Of course, if I do the "I'm Not" for the Southerner, I have to do the "I do" as well. Make it fair. ![]() As a Southerner, I own enough firepower to fund WW3 (9 rifles, a shotgun, and 2 pistols. Looking to add a Saiga 12, Russia's premier combat shotgun sold here in a "hunting configuration"), I firmly believe you can fry anything to make it taste good, and I am rarely found without sweet tea on tap. ![]() @PAYNE: You have GOT to be kidding me...Goldsboro, North Carolina? That's home! ![]()

I'm Welsh. I'm not too aware of many Welsh stereotypes (that might mean AM one ha!) apart from shagging sheep and munching leeks. I do neither. Also not everyone works down a mine (thanks to Thatcher).
I do love rugby, I'm very patriotic and I enjoy a drink and a sing song... Maybe someone can enlighten me to what's perceived as a Welsh stereotype? |

I guess one the the biggest ones for me is with being a Texan: I do say "y'all", have had and ride horses, I love barbeque and true Mexican food but not so much Tex-Mex, hate grits, I have a hunting dog even though I don't hunt, but I do have guns, which are not on a rack in my car nor a truck. I also have not met or partied with the Ewings from Dallas, and amazingly enough still get asked that. Though Texas is very much into football, I am not. I am so about rugby, tennis, and hockey. Though, if football gets recorded and watched on fast forward, then I am good to go.

I was born in...wait for it...Newfoundland! Now if there was ever a Canadian sterotype in Canada we're it. And for the bloody life of me I can't dredge up a Newfie joke though hundreds of people have come up to me since I arrived on the mainland to tell me one. Usually they're funny. It's odd you know, it's like that's a custom up here to lay a newfie joke on a newfie. We're supposed to be pretty laid back and humour laden in the self deprecating dept. We are by and large I guess. When I was growing up Newfie jokes were common amongst ourselves but it was weird to have people up here do it. They don't do it to be rude...I think they think it's the thing to do. HaHa...back home mainlander jokes abound as much as Newf ones. If I began laying mainlander jokes around up here I think it might piss some locals types off. All these jokes are fairly lighthearted althougha few people back home these days think they've had their day. It's just a bit of fun but then they're pretty ingrained in me. My family and relatives, friends back there etc are old time newfs and pretty tolerant.
As a Canadian I DO wear flannel shirts...only in the winter though and I'm particular about the tartan. Some tartan is bloody hard on the eyes. I was a weekend warrior beer swizzling bar hopping Maple Leaf fan before I stopped drinking. Unfortunately I'm still a Leafs fan....eh? ![]() Hmmm...any Newfoundlanders here? Open invite to say hello is out there. I may even do a separate post. Newfs living away and how that feels etc. Fish out of water so to speak. Anyway stereotypes. They can be hurtful frustrating and downright misleading at times. A little funny too if not taken too seriously or are a vehicle for hate. Interesting topic. |

Great thread.....I've gone through each post this evening as I needed
some light hearted humor tonight. OK.....I was born & raised in the San Fernando Valley...lived there until 30+ then still lived in So California (Los Angeles County) until I was 53 years old. I was a valley girl before anyone knew what a valley girl was.....& I had no idea where they came up with the "like" stupid way of talking because no one I ever knew talked that way. However, growing up, I spent my summers in Topeka Kansas with my mother & grandparents. My Gramps would take me fishing on the weekends.....we would go fishing on Mill Crick......so all my life, I called every little stream of water a "crick". Everyone made fun of my word "crick" saying thats what you get in your neck, a creek is what you fish in but that's the say all the Kansas people I was around said it....so that's what I learned. California girls on the beach are always pictured having long straight blond hair....me, I had curly, frizzy auborn hair which was a miserable thing when I went to the beach & everyone else had their beautiful straight hair without a hair out of place while mine was sticking out all over the place unless I tied it down. I hated swimming in the ocean even though I enjoyed walking on the beach.....the cold yucky stinky water was definitely NOT inviting & the horrible little jelly fish that came into the Santa Barbara bay the one time I decided to walk out into the water left me in pain. Little creeps looked like bubbles on top of the water....had no idea they were jelly fish. I am a female.......my goal in life was NEVER TO GET MARRIED & HAVE KIDS (or children either) like every other female I knew. I wanted a career because I didn't want to be anything like my parents. That's not exactly how life went, but I ended up getting married, having a daughter & HAVING A CAREER as a firmware design engineer for 15 years before the aerospace industry in California died. Sporty cars & SUV's were big in California.....& I had both. Loved driving my toyota supra at 100 + mph where is was safe in the back country desert roads. California was one of the few states where you could go to the beach in the morning & snow ski in the afternoon....got a chance to enjoy that several times. Movie stars were not common to see every where you went.....the only one I ran into was Keenan Wynn at the post office when he opened the door of his limo into the side of my little old VW. The girl I went to junior college with & practiced for many performances with, was the daughter of a famous California News reporter who did a lot of war reporting.....I was so surprised when I went to her house to practice & met her dad. So I moved from California to KY 5 years ago (wow, time flys) & now I am trying to adapt to the more southern way of doing things: Pot lucks.....sometimes several times in one day ![]() Sweetea.....some I like...most I don't Fried Okra....not bad if you don't eat too much at a time. Baked Oysters.....again, not bad but a little goes a long way especially when you are living alone & you are the only one eating them. Ah yes.....my truck.....you betcha....prefer it to all the sporty cars I have ever had. I get teased about my truck being too big for me to drive.....but I haul it around like I've been driving it all my life & even learned the hauling & backing up thing with my horse trailer. Can't live in KY without having horses.....yes you can......but I can't...unfortunately, I'm still waiting to get my horse here from California.....I left her there 5 years ago because she was at training age & had strangles, so I couldn't clear her to go cross country anyway for almost a year after I moved.....then I ran out of money. Everyone has more horses than they can ride here....so I am never without a horse to ride when I want to. I fix my own lawn tractor.....definitely a shock to the guys at the parts places. After leaving my husband, I now have to fix & do everything myself. I always knew how to do everything, but didn't because he wouldn't if I did. Some things I don't have the physical strength to do...but noticed that it took 3 guys to remove the pipe that I couldn't remove either ![]() I'm sure there are more things that I have missed....but enough for this novel this time.

I still love the story of when my stepmother, who was born and raised in Washington, D.C. came back from Germany where her husband had worked with the Army Corps of Engineers just following the War and she'd have her long, blonde hair braided and up on her head and new people she'd meet would tell her how good her English speaking skills were, no accent at all!

Cornish pasties are lovely. Filled with potato, mixed veg, onions and beef.
There's also other pasties with various fillings, like chicken, corned beef, cheese and onion. I really fancy a pastie now! |

Uhh...okaaay. What...in the name of the Almighty...is a boiled peanut?? Oh yes and that sweet tea thing. It's the second time I've seen that mentioned. What is it [inane question it sounds like] and is it a popular regional beverage for some reason? East coast maritime and atlantic Canada is big on tea from teabags with sugar and milk but it can't be that. Has me wantin' some tho whatever it is! Oh yeah...I'd prob do the 'boiled' peanuts too. Gotta be hard to screw up a peanut! Hiya notz!

Hi Quizzickle,
A boiled peanut begins with a "green" peanut, as in not dry roasted. It's fresh from harvest straight out of the soil. You boil them in salted water until the nut is soft, very tasty if cooked right. I cook them right! This is how I make 2 quarts of sweet tea, In about 3 cups boiling water I add 8 small tea bags. I let it steep/sit for an hour. I use 1/2 cup sugar but some use much more than that! I add the rest of the water stir well and refrigerate it. That's sweet tea. In the south (hot & humid) ICED sweet tea is the regional drink of many.

I am of european descent and yes i still live with my parents so I fit that stereotype . . . but it's probably more because I'm mentally ill. My sister and brother moved out years ago.
