I'm backpacking sometime in September for the weekend, and I usually wake up in the night going pee every other hour because I'm drinking so much in the day. And now because of the extra lithium, I'll be having to stop to run behind a tree every fifteen minutes during the day hikes!

What do I do? It's not healthy to hold it. Are there pills to take to stop the urges to pee so much? I need extra fluids, but should I stick to gatorades over regular water?

Thanks!

Coconut water is the new hydration drink, if you can get it without too much added sugar. Some brands have a lot more potassium than others, too. If not, you are better off with water with a pinch of salt and lemon juice for flavor. Gatorade has way too much sugar. You can probably find recipes online for homemade Gatorade substitutes. I saw some a long time ago so my memory is a little fuzzy.

I usually hike 15 miles roundtrip, so water is extremely important for those who take lithium to avoid dehydration, fainting, dizziness, and kidney failure/problems, etc. I need to drink at least double of what I normally intake because I'll be sweating it out.

I've tried coconut water and not like it, so I'm looking for some vitamin water with electrolytes like gatorade without too much sugar.

If it's available near you, I would recommend "Smart Water." It's distilled water with electrolytes. It has no taste - just tastes like water - and no calories. Whenever I've come close to dehydration, it perks me back up immediately. If you had Smart Water with you on your hike, you wouldn't need to drink as much water to stay hydrated.

Good luck and have fun.

@Shattered sanity: Heheheh. We usually say that descriptions of my family reunions start off like a bad etnic joke.

Yeah, backbacking and lithium, better water a lot of trees than skimp on the fluids. I packed a lot during my lithium days and well, the risk isn't worth is. sometimes you just have to trott and bear it. Kathy had a good suggestion though. Get PLENTY of that stuff, just remember you have to carry it in and the bottles out HUGGGGSSSS!

I personally think you just have to drink...know when I was backpacking into the Serria's & into the Rocky's around the Teton's, I was always stopping to drink so I wouldn't get dehydrated. I found that sweating from hiking make there be less fluids to have to pee out....even though I ended up drinking more.....but if you have to go, you have to go & it's just a fact of nature.....which is what you are out enjoying....so just be a natural part of it & if that's what your body needs to do....so be it even if it is a nuisance.

By all means keep yourself hydrated ... I'm pretty sure that Gatorade now makes a reduced calorie product ... I mainly drink water, but on hotter days when I'm sweating like a pig, I make sure to drink at least one Gatorade to replace some nutrients like potassium ...

And, remember this above all ...

Late at night, the forest is darker than a thousand midnights down in a cypress swamp, so when you stumble out of that tent to go pay the water bill (pee), make sure that tree you're watering is actually a tree and not a bear's leg ... ... !!!
