The spawn of Satan as one of our members dubbed them are back. I was just walking across my yard when one of the b@stards nailed me on my leg. Came in the house, took Benadryl, put ointment and ice on the sting.

Dang these things HURT!

Whine, whine, whine.

Can you tell where those wasps are coming from? If they have a nest near where you were walking, it might be worth avoiding (or eliminating, if that's practical).

Fooze, I have cans of wasp spray in a bunch of places around the property. Didn't look for a nest yesterday. I wanted to get in the house and treat the sting. I'm mildly allergic.

I have no problem eliminating the evil beasts. Normally I take a live and let live philosophy. Not with Satan's spawn.

Una, the nests these buggers are not all that pretty. They are honeycomb shaped without the honey.

I just found the nest and sprayed it into oblivion.

Had plans to run some errands today that got set to the side. My ankle is swollen and hurts. The rest of my just feels icky.

Sort of funny wasp story from last week. Was cleaning up around the yard. Picked up an empty planter. Saw there was a wasp nest in it as I lifted it. I swear I could qualify for an Olympic shot put distance for how far I threw that pot! Pot went one way. Wasps came pouring out a different way. I went yet another way.

I had one land on my outside driver's side mirror after I parked my car today... Swear to God that sucker was staring me down... Daring me to open my door and get out...

It finally ducked behind the mirror and I made my escape...

I will be picking up a can of wasp spray next time I'm at the store and will be spraying it liberally behind that mirror to kill whatever is going on there...

I hate them sorry useless bastids!

Liz, if you have some old school antiperspirant with aluminium that might help to apply to the bite. I think it works for bees anyway. Not quite an old wives tale, just an old gals faulty memory.

That sucks, I hope you feel better soon. I am also allergic to wasps. A few years back, we found a wasp nest under construction on the side of the house. They hadn't moved in yet, so we were able to destroy it.

Pflowers, I would have stayed in the car too.

Una, good tip. Thanks. A former co-worker told me about Benadryl ointment. It didn't help much this time. Usually very effective.

Rechu, I'm normally live and let live with outdoor critters, but not wasps. I'm all for destroying their nests.

Wasps have been buzzing around here too. Even find their way inside my house so always cautious. I have to replace window screens. Some destroyed by the raccoons, others by hail....but the wasps make their homes inside the screen/outside the window but must find small open cracks to get through. My kitchen window is 2nd story from in back of my house. I buy those long distance killer sprays & aim from the ground as close as is safe from falling wasps. I have had other bugs bite while I am mowing. The other year my whole hand & arm swole up after the bite. I don't trust any bugs except for our lightning bugs. They love to hitch a ride on my while mowing in the evening. Cote found a dead wood bee in the house last week. He picked it up in his mouth but guess he didn't like the flavor or texture cause I found it laying down stairs on the floor in the entry hall. I just don't want him thinking a wasp is good to play with

We do....usually start about mid May. Love after a rainy day, it is like they all do liftoff out of the grass at dusk. Love our lightning bugs.

On the other hand, this year is supposed to be our year for the 17 year brood of red eyed cicadas. They came my 2nd summer here last time. Those things buzz loud & that year they thought my lawn tractor was a mating call & tried to swarm me when I mowed. Will see how that goes this summer.

Tractor = Cicada mating call That could make mowing deafening.

I love lightning bugs. They are almost gone from my area. I don't remember the reason, but they are dying off around the country.

I know when I first moved here, I had beautiful Luna moths show up during the summer. The guy who owned the 8,000 acre cattle farm across the road died & his family auctioned off the farm. 2 owners later, the owner now raises corn & soy & has at least 10,000 acres. They spray the fields with herbicides before planting & then crop dust mid summer with helicopters right across the road. I haven't seen a luna moth since they started this. I miss my beautiful huge moths. On the other hand, this may also decrease the number of 17 year cicadas around here too. Sometimes I wish nature could just be nature good & bad. So far this hasn't killed off tge lightning bugs but think there are less that there was 18 years ago when I moved here

This isn't about wasps, but did you see the news story about the killer bees killing three horses? The owner saw the horses behaving oddly and went to check on them. She pulled on a heavy jacket to try and save the horses. All three ended up dead. Their faces and nostrils were so swollen from the stings they couldn't breath. The lady also got attacked on her head and hands.

The whole thing sounds like a nightmare to me. I'm allergic to be stings so the idea of a swarm of killer bees gives me the heebiejeebies sit here in my living room. I don't know if I would be able to wade in to protect my horses. On the other hand I probably would.

Back in the day, wasn't there a horror movie about killer bees?

That's so sad, @lizardlady...

I've seen a guy on Instagram that destroys the hives of killer bees.

One brave soul if you ask me!

Here's an interesting article about subduing them if called in for rescue...

Just a moment...

I hope to never have an encounter with these!

A neighbor had his bee hives on the property next to the creek....these are his honey bee business hives. He waa having some heavy equipment work being done on the property & it irritated tge bees & they kept stinging the workers. He ended up having to move all tge hundreds of hives until they finished the work. It was interesting to watch them smoke the hives to keep them in while they loaded them onto the truck to move them. If normal honey bees can get that irritated, would hate to run into those africanized killer bees.

Wonder where that happened

It happened in Comanche, Texas, @eskielover...

Comanche County couple’s three horses killed in bee attack – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

The link I posted earlier is about how firefighters are trained to respond to killer bee scenarios...

Years ago we bought our hay at a place where you had to pass his hives to get to the hay. Normally I was okay with that. Just made sure the windows were closed when I drove by. One day the drive was blocked so you had to walk by the hives to get to the hay. I froze rather than walk by the hives.

Hay seller: "It's okay, just don't be afraid. They won't bother you if you are not afraid."

Me: "Too late."
