We all have different perspectives. I think that uniforms promote school pride and unity for all students. I do not think they will ever be required here in public schools. But I do think that the staff at school needs to enforce the dress code in place. I think parents need to know what their children are wearing when they head off to school, what they’re doing on the bus, and how they’re behaving in school.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I am the first person that would be up at the school complaining if I thought the school was being unfair. For example in Jr. High, my daughter’s best friend was forced to remove her nose ring because it was “not the image that this school wishes to portray”. Now it is my own personal belief that Jr. High is much too young to have a piercing. BUT the school has no idea of our religious or cultural beliefs and if I allowed my child to get her nose pierced who was the Principal to demand she remove it?

Yes, it is a big sore spot for many people, but I also feel it would promote school pride, and encourage a "dressing for education" mindset.
I am wearing my own "school uniforms" now, and other teachers are expressing interest as well. Not all, of course, and as I said before, my daughter, who is a teacher, didn't like the idea at all for herself, though her twins wear uniforms to their elementary school. Many urban public schools do wear uniforms, but I doubt it will ever go here. Patty |

Our schools have uniforms but they are voted on school by school every three years. It amazes me that the high schools don't have uniforms but the elementary, middle, and junior highs do. I will advocate the uniforms when my daughter gets to high school.

We never had uniforms in school in the early 70's. Only the local Catholic Parochial Schools wore them. We wore dresses or skirts and blouses - period. If they were too short we got sent home to re-dress.
In my private and seldom humble opinion I would have loved to have worn uniforms because I thought they were interesting - like British schools or boarding schools wore. I always was weird that way - for an American. I was always an Anglophile. There was no way on earth I could ever look cool. In fact I remember being mocked the first time I ever drank at a party. Someone mocked me by talking about she couldn't get over seeing me drink because all she could think of was how I looked with my "pleated skirts and knee socks". I'd forgotten that. I guess I was wearing my own private uniform.....though I bought the skirts at regular clothing stores. High School is usually a painful and forgettable time that many of us couldn't wait to put behind us!!! I never did fit into any clique and I think I am proud of it because most cliques were snobbish and i don't like snobby people. My real life began the day I exited public school! I never looked back once I graduated and 37 years later I haven't missed it for one minute.
