I have been really dizzy for about a week and half and went to the ER on Thursday they told me I had an ear infection take my antibiotics and go home. So I did and went to see my gp today because I got so dizzy last night I passed out twice. Anyway he looked at my ears said well they look fine to me but said keep taking the antibiotic just in case. He thinks maybe its med related so I'm to go off my Trazadone and Strattera and then in a couple of days if I'm not better I'm to go off my Cymbalta. He told me he'd send my pdoc a letter to let her know what's going on. Anyway this makes me very scared. I don't tend to do well when I have to go off my meds. I don't know what to do and am very scared that something is really seriously wrong and then they won't know until I'm really sick. Thanks for letting me rant.

See an ENT you could have the *after effects* of an ear infection the one the doc in ER saw....you may have Labyrinthitis.....you can Google that .

In my opinion, this is called vertigo. It doesn't matter if you have dirty or clean ears, this has to do with the inside of the ear. I would have someone check for Virtigo. It is very treatable.
Good luck my friend.

Here is an update. I am still very dizzy...it comes in spurts now instead of being constant. I have learned I can only sit up for about an hour then need to lay down. I stood up last night at the ladies meeting I went to and thought I was going to go down but managed to just hang on to the pew in front of me. I have officially withdrawn from school because of this and today am to stop the Cymbalta. I hope this works cuz this being dizzy all the time SUCKS!!!

Janniebug,

I'm sorry you're worried.

I was going to ask you about your medications. So many of them have so many side effects.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hugs,

EJ

Wow! I'm confused (this is new?) Isn't the most recent change to your medications the Cymbalta? Why wouldn't they have stopped that first, if that's true? Someone needs to be thinking clearly for you, sorry it isn't me Dizziness

Are you lightheaded, or, does the room spin? Dizziness is different from vertigo. Neither feel good. Make sure you're breathing fully and not too fast. BTW fluid in the middle ear often upset our balance system, not often viewable by looking in the ear! Dizziness whoooaa.

I hope you continue your ongoing regular meds... and speak to your T about all this? TC

I went and saw my gp on tuesday and he said he has no idea why I'm still dizzy. He said the only thing he can think of is that the nerve endings that cover your nerves that keep you in balance are covered by fat and maybe my rapid weight loss has thrown them off and then they will get used to not having as much around them. I hope that's what it is. He did say that I needed to go back on my meds asap because he fears he did more harm than good in taking me off of them. So I'm back on them and mainly the only time I'm seriously dizzy is if I sit up too long or blow my nose.

Dizziness is exactly what vertigo causes, but if you are having dizziness while standing mostly, this may be due to what they call "Orthostatic hypotention/hypertention". This is the inability to counter the affects of gravity on your heart. (ie. your blood pressure probably drops) This has also been know to be diagnosed as "Autonomic neuropathy". I would see a neurologist or a cardiologist as soon as I could. This can also be caused by a blood clot(which is life threatening)
Let us know how it is going. I wish you the best Janniebug.

A in-home way to check is to check your pulse while in a laying position(count the beats per minute for 15 secs and then times by 4) and then check it again while standing. If you see a dramatic change you better see a doctor soon. (especially if it drops)
I wish you the best my friend.

When I went to the ER for the first time they did a test where I had to lay down and they did my vitals, then sitting up, then standing up and my vitals changed a bit so the doc said I was probably dehydrated and to drink water and gatorade. I would love to go to an ENT but the one that is affliated with the clinic I go to won't see me because I owe too much money and the only other one in the area won't see me because I have medicaid for my insurance. I am hoping that after I fill out the paper work for financial assistance for my bill that they will lift the thingy on my account that doesn't let me see any doctors. The only way I had been able to see my doc is that I have been in the ER so much.

Thanks for your concern.

Please keep us posted on what's going on. You can buy otc meds for vertigo now. You might try that. I wish you the very best. Please be careful.

Hugs,

Jan

Hi Jbug. If you are having a problem with your heart rate or your blood pressure while standing it doesn't have anything to do with Vertigo(virtigo has to do with the ears, when they are dirty and nothing to do with your vitals) When your blood pressure changes from a sitting to a standing position it creates a lot of different problems. It puts stress on your heart(which can cause atrial fibrilation) and eventually cause blood clots(which is life threatening) ....Don't take any chances. Has the doctor put you on any blood thinners? If he has then you probably know about this stuff. Good luck to you my friend and keep us posted.-k-

Well the skinny on what is going on now is. I have to wear a heart monitor tomorrow because Monday night I passed out again. I am to go to the heart place at 10:30 am and wear it for 24 hours. I just hope that this is the end of it all and they are able to find something out. I was in the ER Monday night due to a severe ear ache and when I got home I passed out. When I was in the ER they did my pulse ox and it was at 92%. I was breathing fine and was concerned that it was so low. The doctor said it was probably because I had just had a cigarette.

Ahhh.. The halter moniter right? Usually your cardiologist wont see anything using a halter moniter unless this is a day to day thing. I would ask him to get a tilt table test scheduled. That will show him/her exactly what is going on instantly if it has to do with the heart. I hope that you get this one figured out soon. Oh, and remember you are 'your own' best doctor. You know what you feel inside and the doctors work for you. Do some research and 'tell' them what you want to do. They will usually listen. Good luck my friend.

I thought it was going to be a halter monitor but its not. I have to wear it for 30 days. It has 2 electrodes and a button I push when I have an episode then I call the office and do a recording. One of the electrodes had come loose yesterday and didn't give a good result so I replaced it this morning after my shower so hopefully today will be better.

That sounds complicated to me. grrrr Buggie, has anyone done nutritional analysis on you? I pass out when I take in too much salt (because of low potassium) also, I think low selenium can cause fainting. IDK I'm midst migraine right now Dizziness

While you're having to note any episode and call the doctor, maybe you could also write down what you were thinking about when it happened? It would be nice if you are holding your breath (or breathing haltingly) that's causing this. One can wish it's a simply fix for you, yes? TC

This is what 'they' call an 'event' monitor.(don't worry about loosing the one electrode because it is just a back up. They both monitor blood pressure and pulse in different regions. The only time they are different is if there is a blood clot).. It must be more serious that I thought if they want you to wear this. It must have to do with the heart.(please don't try holding your breath to see what happens..lol) I hope that they find out what is causing this and that you can live past this. Good luck my friend.

P.S. If you aren't on a blood thiner then I would ask your doctor about it.(blood thiners protect you against blood clots) just my thoughts.

I would go to an ear doctor and if that doesnt work a neurologist...I have a friend that gets dizzy from too much salt. Another from a poor diet and sleep and stress. Me I had "ear rocks" I forget twhat the real name is but an ear doctor will pick it up in a minute... I cant imagine that an ear infection would make you pass out though...to me it sounds like something else...it seems to me a lot of people get dizzy and it goes away and they never find out what caused it to begin with..

Jannie,
I hope you are feeling better. I know all too well what it is like to suffer from dizziness. I was diagnosed with Meniere's Syndrome a while back. It is an inner ear disorder which results from too much fluid being produced in the inner ear. Now my ent says he's not sure if I have it at all because my test results/symptoms are not consistent with traditional Meniere's. I believe it is sinus related/allergy related for me, and stress definitely brings it on. I also have to watch my salt intake. I hope you feel better, dizziness can be a hard thing to diagnose, but you will feel better once treatment is started. Take care!

Best Wishes,
Sujin

I went and saw the ENT today. She said she had no idea what was going on. She got the results of my EEG and it was normal. So now she's ordered a brain scan. I am thinking about just throwing in the towel and learning to live with it.

This is what I have been trying to tell you Janniebug. You'll see that the brain scan comes up normal. When this happens, go see the neurologist and have them test you for neuropathy. Just my thoughts.

Brian.
