I haven't done that thingy for about a week and for the last couple of days have been working hard to poop and haven't any success. I know that is one of the side effects to having baratric surgery and not one I enjoy. But anyway so far I have tried a bunch of Senna, 4 treatments of Miralax and some fiber pills, oh I also did a fleet suppository.

What else can I try? I don't want to over do it but wow I need to poop. I can feel it wanting to come out but I can't make it come on. I can't really do it tomorrow as I will be on the road all day, I have to go to Little Rock to see my surgeon for a check up. I had hoped to get the deed done today so I wouldn't have this weighing me down before I weigh tomorrow but I guess that won't be happening. I guess I will try another suppository.

Since you've had bariatric surgery I concerned about giving the wrong advice. Can you eat a high fiber cereal - if you can ...buy Bran Buds cereal. I always have a problem with constip. and this cereal helps a lot, but you have to eat it daily for it to work. If it's okay with your doctor start eating this cereal.

Regular use of stool softeners (I take 1 twice a day) really helps to prevent this discomfort. It just keeps things moving easily. I know that doesn't help now, and I wish I had some good advice, but I will just say I hope you find relief soon.
Thanks for this!

HI, Though I have not had Bariatric Surgery I am going through the same thing right now. I have been bound up for several days. I sometimes when it gets very bad, have to drink some 'Magnesium Citrate' which is what they gave me at the Emergency Room to help me have a bowel movement.

Magnesium Citrate is a very bad tasting carbonated laxative in the laxative section comes in a 10oz. bottle sometimes is flavored in Cherry or plain Lemon Lime and is very sour but really does the trick. However I would recommend that you consult the pharmacist or your physician on the proper dosage for you since you had the Bariatric Surgery it may be different for you.

I hope that soon you find some relief I have battled chronic constipation for years and this is the old standby I use to go when I get really impacted.

Icky subject but it should be talked about. I have been suffering from long term constipation. It almost seemed like I had forgotten how to go. I had lost patience and gave up way too quickly. I don't know if anyone else has had that experience.

I finally asked my GP. He prescribed something called Movicol. They are powders that you make up into a drink. I took them for a week or so and it did help. It was supposed to kick start my system but it didn't. My system is very stubborn.

I have tried most things but not suppositories. Stool softeners help but don't take too many.. Believe me!! My trouble was that I was changing too many things at once. I would never know what helped !!

I am now eating about 85 grams of prunes every morning. I think it is helping and I am reasonably regular. I also take 4-6 psyllium capsules before lunch and 2 Acidophilus capsules with lunch. I think my diet is reasonably good but it may lack enough fiber.

If you do too well, you end up with a loose stomach or you feel like you always want to go !!

At the moment, I am a lot happier and I go most days.

Good luck to everyone and don't be afraid to discuss it.

I eat popcorn almost every day; it's a whole grain and has lots of fiber and not many calories and is "fun"; no butter or much salt though!

I forgot to mention - it's not good to get in the habit of using stimulant based laxatives except for emergencies or once in a while because the bowels can become dependent on them. The bran buds cereal works for me the best - so do prunes but I don't like their taste and also 'chia' seeds work good - these have the added benefit of omega 3 in them.

I find that a Coke Icee does the trick for me.

Or I eat 1 banana at breakfast, 2 apples at lunch, and corn with dinner. You also should drink 6-8 cups of water a day. I don't know if you can do that with the bariatric surgery though.

Hope you get to feeling better!

Usually Epsom Salts are used in bath water - are you saying soaking in this helps?

coloxyl with senna is better than coloxyl - movicol is good for a one off thing - but if youve had surgery the best thing to do is to discussit with your dr - make sure you are gettin enough water as that is a major source of constipation - the 2 litres a day thing seems to work.

for me - if that happens i eat hot food - curries and chilie stuff - works every time

oh taking fibre when youre already clogged up - wil only clog you up more - in my experience - and the prunes or prune juice or pear juice or fruit is a great idea.

anyway - i hope things get moving for you soon

Stool softener twice a day. It isn't a laxative so it is not unhealthy to use.
I was taking two a day, and my doctor suggested spacing them and that works even better.
Natural. Sit and go and done.

as somebody else suggested you can use mag citrate. It usually works within five or six hours. Get it really cold in the fridge and drink it with a straw so it doesn't taste as bad.

Or you can use a fleet's enema.

Both of those are short term options not for frequent use. Once you get cleaned out you can try some of the other options people have mentioned in this thread. Fiber and drinking plenty of water should be routine. Activia yogurt has helped me.

I finally got some results Monday afternoon. I did another suppository and it worked. Wednesday I was put on Tetracycline and boy howdy does that ever clean you out. I just called the doctor and asked for something else I was up a couple of times in the night with explosive poop. It is a good thing I didn't try to just sleep through it.

I did learn a lot through your posts though.

But to answer some of your questions. I eat a high protein non gluten diet. I am non gluten trying to see if that will improve my over all health as it has helped several of my family members. They are testing me for celiac. Even before I went gluten free I didn't eat many carbs as my bariatric surgeon encouraged a high protein low carb diet.

I wouldn't gauge the tetra effects on this example only, as your situation prior to taking it wasn't normal. It might be fine once you're on a good diet and regulation cycle.

High protein in known for binding.

You need EFA essential fatty acids and that will solve your problems, I'm pretty sure. You can buy them in capsule form for good strengths.

Otherwise, be sure to use a good oil like olive oil, a teaspoonful a day...

and of course cold water salmon is an excellent resource too.

I'm amazed to learn that someone with nearly no stomach can become bound up this way.

Hope you find a solution soon that works well for you.

I can so relate and whomever said we need to talk about it is right on!

I take alot of medications and they all have constipation in it. Drink lots and lots of water even if you have to eat watermelon. That helps get your bowel down. Prunes work. Whole grain everyday will get you going but you have to stay with that at eating whole grain toast.

Oh, I know something that would help also, those "Fiber One bars." ooooo
honey they will make you go.....

Hey, when you do go let us know okay?

Were so sorry, that is a horrible!

_______________________________________________________
while were on this subject sometimes my poop is so HARD that it can't come out and that is when I wrap tissue around my hand and I reach back or I put a glove on and push the front of the skin of where your poop comes out and slightly push it with your arm versus your body.

I know that sounds drastic but sometimes one has to do what once has to do.

Good Luck jbug....
Crew
PS Taking laxatives should be used when only necessary because your body will eventually not poop without laxatives...just be careful!

A stool softener helps very much with this. Twice a day, it draws moisture to the stool so it can pass easier. It's great! It isn't a laxative, it doesn't stimulate the muscles to make you go, it just allows you to pass the stool easily: sit down, go, done.

I will have to try the stool softener route because I can't do the whole grains because I don't eat wheat. I am gluten free. I should be able to use the stool softener.

hey jbug,

all the foods and beverages that others have mentioned should help you. but, there is one thing missing. do you live a sedentary lifestyle? if so, that needs to be worked on because exercise will help you be more regular. it does not have to be strenuous. walking is fine and will help the insides start moving too.

it is very rare for me to experience constipation even though i suffer from IBS and glucose and lactose intolerance. fortunately, i love to eat veggies, especially leafy green ones. and, i love rice and beans. not only is my greens and beans diet healthy, it also has a lot of fiber (as well as minerals, vitamins, anti-oxidants and protein). i always add white rice so that i don't overdo it on the fiber or get a lot of gas. you might want to consider it.

Hi there I know the feeling of being constipated & it's If I was you I would try a small enema with some warm water & some baking soda & some sea salt added & it may help you along - otherwise if the bm is really hard I would try some fleet oil enema & hope that it will soften the motion up. Wishing you all the best.

Are you drinking enough water?

I'm glad you started this thread because I've been wanting to ask someone about my similar problem. At least once a week I can poop, but can't get it all out even though I try my hardest (without trying too hard so it won't my sciatic nerve), so I have to use a lot of toilet paper to clean myself. I'm guessing I'm not exercising enough and not drinking enough water, but I haven't asked a doctor or nurse practitioner yet so I don't know.
