What can I say but life has taken but yet another bad turn...... Pap Smear - Abnormal

I just got a call from my doctor and the pap smear I had last week came back showing abnormal cells - what should have taken three weeks to get the test results back only took one full week..... I am not happy with the findings yet I am glad that they finally found some thing for I have known for some time that some thing wrong was going on for I was having too much pain and spotting down there.

PLEASE SAY A PRAYER..... for Breast & Cervical cancer runs in my family.
Plus - I just had a mammogram done last week and now I pray it comes with a big OK stamped on it.

I've had abnormal pap smears before but further tests came back fine. The pap smear really isn't sensitive enough to catch stuff -- it's usually just the first step in finding a cause of the abnormality. It might not be as bad as you fear. I hope not for your sake. Good luck. I'll send positive vibes your way.

Candybear is right - PAP smears are just a screening tool and are not 100% accurate.
They can also pick up abnormal cells at a really early stage when it can be fixed.
However it is scary, because there's no denying it could be something to worry about.
When was the last time you had one? If it was in the last few years, bad cancers take years to grow - that's why you're supposed to have one every few years to pick them up while they are treatable.
I hope you can see whoever you need to soon to get this sorted out, because not knowing is one of the worst things!!!

I had an abnornal pap before so they redid it and called me and told me the cells were a step away from cancer so i had to get a L.E.E.P. It was scary. ever since then i havn't had a problem. Abnormal paps can show up sometimes and when they redo them they are fine. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies.... and Yes, while I know that pap smears can indeed come back positive one time and then negative the next time I still can't help but worry just a little for I have been having so many problems down in that area with in the last year that it just seems as though something has to be going on.... ex: like now - I am having such discomfort and pain in my uterus / pelvis area that I've had to take a few of my RA pain pills to get to a point where I can at least tolerate it and I have pain when I urinate, not the type of pain you get with an infection, but the kind of pain that comes when one is wounded or hurt.

But you know what is so funny (well strange) about all this...... ?
I am not so worried about myself, but I am concerned to how my family will be if I was to die from this.

I know when my time comes it will come and no one can do any thing to stop it (God is in charge of that) - and well lets face it some thing has to cause us to pass on - to answer the call of Death.... I am a firm believer in that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.

P.S.

I forgot this part while I was in the doctor's for my visit...
I was told that I need to loose weight for the blood work on my heart came back and it was way off from last year, therefore, if I did not do something about it that I would have some serious problems in about 5-10 years (and) I was reminded that I already have RA that is breaking down my Autoimmune System and that I have a heart valve that does not function properly.

I guess it is TRUE..... When it Rains it Pours - and I am getting WET!

I have been bleeding off and on and I'm on the pill....So that shouldn't be happening. I've been advised to get a pap too. I hope everything is ok. (*HUGS*).

I have heard about other women bleeding in between their periods while they are on the pill...... therefore, I am sending good vibes your way that this is just part of the small percentage of women that has this issue while taking the pill. Pap Smear - Abnormal

I personally would not be concerned about my bleeding - if I was not having so much pain in that area.... it even hurts (a lot) when I bend over or even do my house cleaning.

I' had a rare tubal infection about eighteen years ago that only one in a million women get - which kind of adds to my concern, but I will let nature take it course and see what the doctor says.

((((((((( Rhap )))))))))

I know this is very scary. There is no way you can escape worrying and being afraid. It's only natural. Please let us know what happens.

Please feel free to send me a pm. I've been there.

Hugs,

Jan

I had my follow up Pap Smear on Monday and now I am playing the waiting game again.......... in the mean time my doctor has referred me to a OB/GYN Specialist to deal with a few other female issues I have been having with out any improvement - therefore, if worse comes to worse and my second pap smear come back abnormal again then this new doctor can handle that medical problem as well.

Please keep ME in your Thoughts & Prayers.

Hopefully it's "just" a false positive on the first one. The odds of that are huge, btw. But still, this is scary stuff. ((((hugs)))

I had an abnormal pap smear before and it ended up being okay. My best friend also had one and ended up doing a biopsy on her cervix. It was a little painful but she got through it well. At first she was terrified but with good support she got through all the waiting processes....test results and doctors phone calls. She ended up being cancer free but they still need to monitor through the years.

I hope everything turns out okay like it did for us.
