My Dr. told me I have to drink at least two protein shakes a day and to add lots of cheese, meat, etc. I have ulcerative colitis and IBS and she, (and another specialist), says my body absorbs very little of my protein intake and that the myelin (sp) sheaths which cover my nerves are dying. That means I will have more and more nueropathy and less and less control of my hands, feet, legs, etc.

I do not like meat except for bacon and ham. It's weird I know, but it's true. I can't live on bacon and ham. Panic disorder makes me choke on meat other than the above. It's just a symptom of it. I don't know why.

I got some protein powder and tried to mix it up and it's one of the worst tasting things I've ever tried.

I plan to check on how much protein there is in the powder compared to Ensure High Protein shakes.

I am allergic to bananas and I can't have anything with seeds so that leaves out strawberries and blueberries. I can have very little fruit and all of it has to be canned.

I bought a smoothie machine. I put in 1 cup lactose free low fat milk, 4 ice cups, the powder and 2 scoops of frozen yogurt. I managed to keep it down but it doesn't taste very good. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks to all for reading.

Hugs,

Jan

What flavor?

Could you add Carnation Instant Breakfast just for taste? Or maybe instant hot chocolate? Something like that might work.

Maybe not use a full scoop to start with. Half and half kinda thing.

I can't have the instant breakfasts. They have stuff that triggers the colitis. I'm can have white chocolate but no other kind. It, too, triggers the colitis.

I also forgot to mention I need to lose weight, not gain it. Advice Needed on Protein Shakes

Can you eat fish? Fish is a good source of protein and low in calories too. Nuts are good as well.

> I got some protein powder and tried to mix it up and it's one of the worst tasting things I've ever tried.

Is it flavoured? Maybe you can find a nicer flavour? Chocolate flavour seems to cover a multitude of nastiness (IMHO) but strawberry might be good if you aren't into chocolate.

> I can have very little fruit and all of it has to be canned.

Hmm... Canned fruit tends to have preservatives and additives and often added sugar / syrup. Is there anyway you could switch to fresh or frozen? Maybe by cutting up fruit and freezing it?

> I put in 1 cup lactose free low fat milk, 4 ice cups, the powder and 2 scoops of frozen yogurt. I managed to keep it down but it doesn't taste very good. Do you have any ideas?

Yep.

Needs more flavour.

Some things that help with flavor include:

Fruit. An apricot goes a long way. Peaches, nectarenines, mangos etc are all good for smoothies. Berry fruits are great, too. If you blend the berries for a while you might be able to strain the fruit if you don't like the pips. Or... If you let the shake settle for a bit all the pips will sink to the bottom and so you could pour the pip free shake off the pips for a pip free shake that tastes better.

Flavouring essences. Vanilla essence etc. Maple syrup is great as a sweetener and flavour enhancer.

Things tend to taste better when they are very cold (because the cold helps numb your tastebuds too. Does your smoothie maker crush ice? If it does then you could make flavoured ice cubes. For example, you could put yoghurt (better for you than frozen yoghurt, typically) into ice cube containers and use the yoghurt ice cubes to cool and flavour your smoothie. Or you could put the milk into the ice cubes. If you suck on an icecube of any variety before drinking the smoothie then the smoothie should taste better because you will have numbed your tastebuds some.

If you were into chocolate then cocoa would help flavour the smoothies too. Because it is strongly flavoured. An alternative would be coffee (decaf even).

Another thought... I don't know what you are like with textures... But there is a place in Aussie called 'Boost Juice' and they make a whole variety of natural juices and smoothies and shakes etc.

One shake that they do is called 'Breakie to GoGo' and it has coarsely ground toasted muesli in it. I thought that sounded strange, but one of my friends absolutely swears by it as their tastiest smoothie. Theirs contains bananas, but there is no reason why you can't substitute banana for something you like.

I was thinking that if you didn't mind the texture (or liked the texture, even) then you could get a few nuts in your shake which would add even more protein to it and make it into more of a meal.

Here is their menu which might be a little inspiring for ideas (the TD4 is just their brand of low fat frozen yoghurt)

Thank you so much for the good ideas and replies. I just realized the shake itself is triggering the colitis. Now I have to take the frozen yogurt out and see if that's the problem.

If I change it one variable at a time, I should be able to work it out. I sincerely hope it's not the protein powder. Advice Needed on Protein Shakes

EAS - Myoplex (individual packs) or Precision Protein Powder (blue container) are both GOOD.

I usually buy the Vanilla Flavor Protein Powder and add Jello Power (fat free sugar free) to the Powder for taste / flavor...... my favorite flavors are Pistachio and Chocolate Fudge.
I also add one cup ice to my milk for a good tasting Smoothie effect.

Protein Shake:

1 - Cup Milk (fat free or low fat)

1 - Scoop Protein Powder

2 - TBSP Jello Mix (fat free sugar free)

1 - Cup Ice

Directions

Add milk and protein powder in blender - Mix well

Add Jello powder in blender - Mix

Add ice in blender - Mix

- Pour into large cup and drink -

What is protein powder?

I am afraid of all things chemical, and avoid as much as I can, preferring as much fresh, natural, local and organic foods as possible.

But I lack protein in my diet and am curious about the protein drinks/powders.

What's in the ingredient list ?

Advice Needed on Protein Shakes thank you!

Protein Powder has been around for many years and used by Body Builders when they need extra PROTEIN in their body for competition........ the two I mentioned above (EAS) were developed by a body building.

Thank you Rhapsody,

I suppose it is like taking a vitamin?

I don't know what those things are. Where they come from. Something to research!

How about peanut or other nut butters? That has lots of protein.

Some bodybuilder's ideas of what powders taste good; Rhapsody's EAS Myoplex is at the top of the list:

Thanks very much!.

I'm sure they taste great... it's just that I want to know what the powder is, what I'm putting in my body.

And if I know that maybe I could make something myself? Then I could trust it easier.

Better yet, for me, would to be able to make a protein shake with no powder, but with natural ingredients and no sugar. Advice Needed on Protein Shakes Advice Needed on Protein Shakes

I think they're mostly just dried egg products, or soy, etc. Echoes; I'm like you though, would prefer to make my own. Here's a list of various kinds and stuff:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/catprot.htm

The powder is "natural" just dried stuff so it can be concentrated. It's like a vitamin, you have to dry it to cram all that stuff into it :-)

Can you eat grains?
