Hi, Im new here and I have a quick question. I have been having alot of physical pain for the last 9 months. Every single day from the time I wake up to the time I sleep, I feel alot of different things. I also developed IBS(Irregular Bowel Syndrome). My Doctor said that this could be stress or some kind of trauma, because months before this started happening my dad almost died.

So I am really torn... Im just wondering is it possible that all these physical pain I am feeling is a really a psychological issue?. That is what my doctor is suggesting. I dont have any nightmares and dont feel stress out really, im just sick and tired of feeling like ***** everyday but I dont see how that can be considered as "stress". Im a pretty calm person.

Yes it is very possible and I know from experience as I went thru psychological pains when my daughter was born with medical problems..... and I thank God that my GYN was educated enough to see that while there was no medical reason to explain my pain there was a psychological reason, therefore, my pain was real.

BTW - I also have RA & Fibro and they act up severely when I am under stress. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I agree w/ rhapsody that stress can cause physical pain. I usually am a laid back person or so I thought it turns out I buried my feelings/stresses and they manifested themselves through my body i.e. lots of back, neck, and jaw pain along w/ bowel issues and a constant upset and cramped tummy. Good Luck finding the cause of you pain. I think if you tried pilates or meditation you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yes the mind-body connection is so interwoven that no one can figure it out. Don't take this as something that is "all in your head though" because that is NOT what this means.

This is one reason why meditation, calming exercises, tai chi and even exercise or a hobby can help someone unwind and not stay so stressed.

Stress can cause major pain. Have you never heard the muscles in your neck and shoulders called "stress muscles"?

And I've been in the position of answering the telephone and hearing some absolutely horrible news and it turned my bowels to water. I'd never believed it possible.

When we were having trouble with the IRS last year, a letter from the IRS would have me in the bathroom all afternoon and evening.

Not to mention a that awful headache that only stress can cause.

confusedguy, welcome to PC!

I agree with the others here that stress can do a lot to a body. I truly believe that there is a huge connection between mind and body.

While your stress over your dad and maybe other things in your life doesn't seem to be affecting your mind so much, it may be manifesting within your stomach (IBS) and pain throughout your body. Stress can manifest in many different ways.

That being said, I think it's also very important to have all physical reasons ruled out. Make sure to have a complete physical (if you haven't had one in the past year). Write down all your symptoms and bring them to the docs for further evaluation during your exam. What may seem like a minor thing could indeed be something more.

I'm not saying all this to scare you, just that it's a good idea to rule out any physical problem that could cause your symptoms.

I wish you well and please keep us updated. We care!

Stress also stresses your immunune system, which is why it's so easy to become physically ill (colds, etc) when stressed. This includes good stress and poor stress. (Good stress coming from that which makes us happy.)
