as noted in a previous thread, i have neighbors who don't take care of their dogs.

upon calling Animal Control this morning, i learned that you can have as many animals as you want. any kind. the puppies were still crying last night at midnight.

i feel so helpless over this. the shelter officer is going to come out and take a look around. i "think" that she can cite them for not having enough shelter for the dogs. i only see two dog houses and five dogs.

my little neighbor girl suggested that i try to put up some kind of screening so that i can't see their yard. they can hear the dogs but my house keeps them from seeing them. i don't know what i would put up and i'd still hear them and know what's going on.

what to do? beat my head against the wall, i guess.

what are the laws in your towns?

here you can also keep a dog on a chain if it has a house and water. i've quit walking on a certain street because a chain is all that holds three dogs back from me. in Lawton, none of the above was allowed. three dogs and no chains.....nada. even if the dog was chained in your yard, you got a citation and it was $150.00.

i don't know if this town has a town manager system or a city council system. you can bet that i'm finding out and going to raise some questions about this.

AND last night i went to the grocery store and actually had to stop and chase five little dogs back to their house when they chased my truck! no leash law here? the owner yelled at me to "quit chasing my g.d. dogs!" i yelled back for her to keep them out of the street then. i could have run over any one of them. it was dark and they were little bitty dogs.

another drama in the life of me, myself and i. the dog soap opera.

pat

I'm not 100% sure, but isn't Austin one of the cities that Animal Planet uses in their Animal Precinct show?

They get tips from people and send over officers to investigate the situation and remove the animals until they can verify if the owners are mistreating the animals. They'll rule out medical causes for their health problems and if the tests come back negative and they gain weight with a regular diet, the owners are proscecuted for animal cruelty. Then the animals are temperament tested and put up for adoption.

You could probably find out more info through their website. Even if they aren't one of the cities involved, I bet there'll be links that tell you what to do regardless.

You aren't right in Austin though, are you?

I am not sure where you are Pat, but I have watched many of these shows and where I come from, I can only but dream that we would receive, or have, the kind of control portrayed in these programs.

I really hope that it works out for the poor animals that you are concerned about.

I cannot bear cruelty, or neglect - even ignorance sometimes!

I hate that, I don't know the laws around here well, but it's just as bad as that. Animals run wild around here, along with all the kids. Sadly there's not much we can do. Maybe slip some food and water over the fence every other day to make sure they are being fed correctly. That will be much better then nothing.

We have laws here, as far as dogs running loose, but the neighbors at the end of the block can't manage to keep their dogs on their property at all. Every time they open the door, the dogs blast past them, and they never go after them either. They wait until an annoyed neighbor walks the dog back home. I always have a big fat chocolate Lab leaving big fat poopy presents in my yard.

One day I was walking my dog and went past their house. His other dog was visibly upsetting mine, and the owner was less than 3 feet away, but wouldn't grab his dog's collar and put her inside the house, which was only 3 more feet away. He just stood there going "Daisy, Daisy." A couple of nights ago the Lab came wandering into my yard around 11:00 p.m. to take a poop. My dog was outside doing the same thing, tied out on her lead and I was there with her. She was practically foaming at the mouth she was so riled up. Then she didn't want to settle down for the night. City Animal Laws???? I have half a mind to call City Hall or the Police Dept. on him, but hate to make any waves.

the animal control officer told me that the tips are always anonymous. she never, ever reveals who calls her.

i still cannot tell what went on. i just don't hear the puppies. and i can't see the gray dog, but she may be lying down. they did put a doghouse in there today, after the control officer came.

they have really high nice fences and chain the dogs???? i don't get that at all.

i'm trying to avoid looking actually. i'm hot, tired and cranky........unloading still........

Wow, they allow how many dogs a person wants? Here on the northeast coast, the maximum is 3.
I never could understand it, how people that can't care for pets, and even kids for that matter, keep having more?
Well biologicaly, but psychologicaly speaking behooves me.
I have a "way out" brother who lives in the next state, can barely care for himself but has 5 dogs and a few cats.
He has problems with vet care, he really should be reported, his neighbors have made such threats too. City Animal Laws????

well, i checked and they still have all five dogs ....... City Animal Laws????

the laws in Oklahoma are strict so the "backyard" breeders don't get out of hand. and i seriously suspect that they are planning on raising pit bulls. they now have four. and a female weinmariner (spelling?).

so, i'm back at zero on this one. i truly become very sad when i see this sort of thing. and it's about 200 feet from my kitchen door. thank goodness i don't use that door and i can't see through it.

i do believe that there are some people who shouldn't have children or pets. pat

I think this is very sad. We do not have a dog limit law that I know of. I have and want only one anyways. I hope someone will take them away somehow.

Check out pit bull rescue organizations and alert them. Thye're fanatical about not letting the breed further develop a bad rap and THEY'LL see to it that those dogs are rescued if there's any suspicious activity going on.

great idea about the rescue. austin is the HOTBED of rescue groups in the southwest. they have the best greyhound group that i've ever heard of. and i'm certain that they will have a pitbull group.

and DE, this dog is so beautiful. AND, i bet there is a rescue group in Austin for your breed.......this is truly making me sick. Thanks for giving me the correct spelling. i'm sure that you've seen the books and photos that a man makes of his dogs???

this week, i gave "Butch" a tidbit and the woman came out and yelled at me. she said it would make him sick. as if eating off of the ground, when the yard is not picked up, won't hurt him! i've never seen a sweeter dog than he is and he just wants to be loved. it makes me suspicious about the "breeding" because he hasn't been neutered.

well, i can't save the world tonight, so i guess i will go to bed. thanks for supporting me on this......xoxoxo pat

I live in the city and we have leash laws...all dogs when outside are required to be on a leash.. (except for the doggie park and the dogs can run and play free there) and where i am staying, you have to be a pooper picker uper for your dogs, or you will get fined... any dog that is let loose is picked up by doggie police... (dogie police cuz I can't think at this moment what they are called lol) Where I am staying dogs cannot be chained outside nor are their dog houses... so the dogs have to be kept inside except when walking them or playing in fenced area...

Cats seem to get the run about.. a neighbor's cat visits sometimes.. the cat even ventured inside when the door was left open.. the lil black pug went nuts trying to catch her.. She is a beautiful cat... I'd love to keep her, but she seems to want to go home after her short vitsits...

I'm sorry to hear about this. There are some real idiots out there when it comes to pets and children. But in general, there are laws when it comes to caring for pets. Even if there's no limit on how many you can have, there are usually laws against abuse and neglect. I agree with the advice to check out a pit bull rescue. There are other rescue orgs and welfare orgs you can seek for advice and help. Local ones would have the best info on laws and such. Those animals in that condition is unacceptible.

Hi Fay,
I know it hurts to feel helpless when you care about something.
I'm glad there are people like you who care in the world. It gives me hope for these poor little animals.

I know where I used to live all pets had to either be on a leash or chain or penned up. You couldn't even have cats outside without being on a leash.

And with the noise ordinances you had to have your animals quiet after 11 pm or else the police would be called and you had to do something about it.

Where I'm at now it's not nearly as strict....I don't even think there are animal laws! Probably because I'm not in a city!
