I have to say, I particularly dislike the "off topic" smiley -- ticks me off every time somebody uses it. That's a really unsupportive scowl on Mr. Smiley's face! But I see no harm in the "I'm with stupid" one. Which I suppose proves that people are going to take things the way they want to take things, and there's no sense in getting up in arms over it.

I agree that there is more than one use for the smilies and what we want for them to say.

LOL. I said that once about hubby, "I'm with stupid," then stopped and thought, "well what the heck does that say for me???" LOL. I think it's more a personal statment, and for fun. Like once I was joking with daughter and starting walking out the "in" door. Well, my daughter had a friend with her and said, "Mom, you're an idiot (don't jump...she meant it funny and it's common for kids these days)" Well, I said, "HAHA, dear daughter. I'd rather be the idiot than whatever the person is called FOLLOWING the idiot!" She was trying to be funny in front of her friend and boy did her friend laugh then! LOL.

I think it's fun in the many ways it could be used, and used for that. However, almost anything has the potential for harm, etc. For instance, tylenol is a great drug, as is asprin. They can be used to harm as well...

I guess I'm saying once again...It's all up to us.

OK, back to the smilie, I had another thought...it could be used when referring to spouse in real life. I could say, "Yeah, he's mine and I love him. (smilie) for life I think."

I don't remember ever seeing anyone use the little "bs" guy. I personally have nothing against it, although I've never used it. If I disagreed with something someone said, I think I'd tell them in a different way rather than telling them their views are bs.

I don't see any hostility, just different views on how that innocent little smiley could be used. I love the smilies, I think they add "character" to our posts and pm's. It's all about fun and self-expression. I think some of us were just thinking about the ways in which someone could potentially be hurt or offended by it.

It's just a matter of using the smilies responsibly. Lol, it's kind of funny how many replies this thread is getting over a smiley!
