Has anyone ever noticed the number of people who read posts marked "triggers." They, by far, outnumber all the other ones that get read.

Why are we so drawn to them? I know I am!

Do you know why you are?

I am drawn to these posts because, when I am calm and quiet, it feels too weird and unnatural. So I look for things to add fuel to my fire.

I think I feel ALIVE with energy (good or bad, it doesn't really seem to matter - as long as it's feeding me). The energy from these feelings seems to give me "personality." When I am calm and collected, I feel so non-descript, like I don't exist.

Do I need to be so masochistic to have a personality? Apparently so. The sick thing is, I kinda enjoy it. I like making myself feel miserable. Gee, and I thought the only addiction I had was to booze! Is there anything I won't stoop to, to get a fix of mental pain and torture?

Maybe its all we relate to.... as you said, it was not a comfortable place when we find ourselves feeling okay with the world.. calm doesn't suit us because we never knew calm..

And sometimes, it might be that we can understand whats behind those triggered posts and as such we might be able to help someone.. or thats how it is for me.

Sometimes the only posts that make any sense to me are the triggered ones.... its what I know. how I can relate to others...

Dont' be so hard on yourself... I don't think this makes you a sick puppy...Faith

I'm not drawn to them!! Boy, are we sick puppies... I've got enough going on in my 3D life that I don't need any more!

If I know the person and their illness, I may read and respond... to help, not to get a charge.

Yo, i have to be in the right mood to go to big trigger posts. Some i never do get to...... for me it's not a rush. i usually pick posts that seem to be about stuff i have worked on and feel like i may be able to give empathy to a kindred spirit.

maybe you are drawn to things that get you lit up because it's time for you to look at them in yourself, ya know? maybe your system gives you the adrenal rush, a kind of protection and energy, to give you the ooomph to "go there".....??????

When I see trigger icons, it signals to me that the person is either in crisis or is feeling the lowest of lows and needs to vent.

Sometimes, due to my own stuff, all I have to offer is a swirling heart or a sad face, but to me that means "I hear you and I care."

<font color="green"> I'm like Petunia in this respect: when I see a trigger icon, I know it's something larger than life to the postee and perhaps begging strong responses. I can handle most posts designated Trigger, so that isn't a problem for me, and I appreciate those that use the icon.

Another thought is that sometimes I have to go read a post, and rather than just rush to respond, I leave and think about a good response. Then, when I return, I might read another's response post and find I wish to continue to think.. thus adding a few more visits to the thread than I might normally make. Boy, are we sick puppies...

I like your ability to observe Boy, are we sick puppies...

No doubt! I tend to get myself all fired up and start typing out nonsense like crazy. I am so grateful for the ability to EDIT! Can you imagine what it would be like if we couldn't edit??? Boy, are we sick puppies...

And yet, it seems like one can never edit enough.

LOL for some members who read here, I'm sure that's true but maybe that has more to do with their problem and not mine?

I ALWAYS preview reply on longer answers (and always on PMs, as it can be set permanently there.) That saves me MANY edits Boy, are we sick puppies...

Sometimes I write out what I would say if I were being totally "in the flesh" so to speak... Boy, are we sick puppies... then I do a rewrite which means the same thing but is more suitable for human consumption. Boy, are we sick puppies...

Human nature!!!! It's the same when they show something gruesome on TV, you just have to look. Like that fear factor show where they have to eat the horrible stuff, I cringe in my seat, yet I don't miss one bite!!!

You are very kind, Petunia, and you have opened my eyes just a little wider today. I hope I always respond with such love and empathy as you do.

Thank you! Boy, are we sick puppies...

Yup! What starts out on my screen is DEFINITELY NOT what is sent. And yet, I still manage to overlook one stupid thing that should have been deleted...

I may be interpreting this wrong, but I did not mean to say I get a thrill out of it. I was just pointing out how drawn I am (and aparently many others) toward them. It was simply an observation, for me, mostly.

I am not so vile a person as to get a "thrill" out of others' pain. I am certainly not proud to be attracted to the darker things I and others' experience. That is just a place where I naturally tend toward. It is also very natural for me to feel pain and anguish most of the time - and when I don't feel that, I don't feel "normal."

I always see negative before positive.

I read posts with trigger icons not because it's like a gruesome car wreck on the side of the road, but because the trigger icon signals to me that perhaps the person is struggling mightily with something I can offer help with.

Silly me.

I guess the trigger marks don't scare me away as my life has been pretty much always been triggering events. I don't find I am triggered by posts that mention suicide or abuse. I've lived through all that kind of stuff & can relate. I AM triggered by movies with violence, abuse or sexual content...which pretty much leaves out all tv & movies. The visual stuff can send me into a downward spiral.--Suzy

P.S. Plus someone here, when I was quite new, was complaining about people not using the trigger mark. I didn't even know what it was so now if there is any chance of my writing causing a trigger, I put it in.

Again, I did not mean it to come across as a "thrill" for me!

So as not to have to retype, please see my response to Septembermorn.

It may clarify what I was getting at a little better.

Anyway, you are just proving my point - you, too, are drawn to that little red X, no matter how lofty your ideals!

Yes, silly you...
