The Healing Power of Tears

Tear's "hold the key" to the chemistry of human emotions... crying does indeed relieve stress.

Not Just Drops of Water:
Here’s an interesting finding....
Frey, a scientist compared the chemical make-ups of tears caused by eye irritants such as sliced raw onions, and tears caused by emotions. Tears caused by emotions were found to have more protein and beta endorphins in them. These emotionally induced tears appear to contain high levels of cortisol, an important hormone released during times of stress. When we cry from emotional stimulation, we may actually be releasing toxins from our bodies, in the same way we do when we sweat or breathe out air. Through crying, we help ourselves heal.

The Gender Gap:
Although all over the world, women are more likely than men to cry, the difference in frequency is not that great. American men, for example, have been found to cry about 1.8 times per month. American women cry about 3.5 times per month. Women may cry more often because they have naturally higher levels of prolactin, a hormone found in tears. Prolactin is also the hormone that triggers milk production.

Interesting. Does this mean that by crying, you remove cortisol from your system, or is the cortisol being created and removed when we cry? Do you know?

The cortisol is being created when we become emotionally upset, angered or stressed..... by crying we are able to release this biological poison, therefore, preventing it from over loading our bodies and from harming our physical health - that which often happens when one tends to stay stressed out or lives emotionally on the edge.

The research showed.... this is why men might have more heart attacks later in life, they tend to take less of care of themselves as they age, avoid yearly physicals and they find it hard to release inner emotions through tears - - unlike their female counter part.... females find it easy to cry and they often cry even when they wish they would not, hence instant healing is started.

AH yes, I know about cortisol in times of stress (I have a major argument with cortisol! stomp stomp) Ok, from this then, I need to work harder at not becoming so upset that I cry, for that just adds to my problems. ~ Power of Tears ~

IDK I have a relative who does cry (sensitive guy) and yet he has heart disease when no one else in the family does. ~ Power of Tears ~ Gotta think about this more ~ Power of Tears ~

Yes I understand what you are saying....... for in and of its self I would not say that "not crying" is the only cause of heart disease in men, and the research I mentioned did state that "not crying" with a few other issues included is why men "might" have an increase in heart attacks later in life ( as they age).

QUOTED ABOVE: by ME

So....... YES, I agree, crying or not crying - is not the MAIN cause of heart attacks in MEN.

On Wikipedia they said that Men think more highly of themselves and women tend to regret things more. So men do not get upset very easily, but are under a lot more stress and from keeping that stress in they tend to live shorter than women.

IMO - That is very TRUE....... I guess we need to let our little boys cry more when they need to, so they may grow up to be a physically strong & secure male that knows that Real Men do indeed - CRY!!

I rarely cry from sadness, but when I do, OH boy! It's a flood! I think this is due to the antidepressant I take, since I used to cry easily, but since having this med for many years now, I can go for a year or more without shedding a tear.
Recently, though, I've LAUGHED so hard I've shed tears, and I sure felt better. Wonder if tears of laughter have the same hormonal/chemical makeup?

They probably do................. but we do not feel it so deep from within us, for there is no pain attached.

~ Power of Tears ~ I went once to a laughter semenar and laughted so hard it was acutally painful. After I was so tired just like after a good cry so I imagine it has the same effect. I certainly slept well.
