Three Things

Three things in life that, once gone, never come back - Time, Words, and Opportunity

Three things in life that may never be lost - Peace, Hope and Honesty

Three things in life that are most valuable - Love, Self Confidence and Friends

Three things in life that are never certain - Dreams, Success and Fortune

Three things in life that make a man - Hard work, Sincerity and Commitment

Three things in life that can destroy a man - Booze, Pride and Anger

AA or not, it's the truth, though. Addiction to alcohol has destroyed many a promising career, just like drugs do. Three Things

Sis Tomi,
I agree with you. Unfortunately one of the reasons that AA is not as effective as it could be is because of the abstinence thing. Many studies have been done and have shown that AA would work so much better if they would talk about controlling alcohol intake rather then abstaining from it.
Now I am not saying that this is for everyone. I have known people in my family that could not control their alcoholism; they had to stop all together. I guess I am just rambling..it was a thought.

Ok... well? I would be one of those that would have to abstain. I didn't know about those studies, I guess because I don't have the problem. But whatever works in overcoming the problem.

IMHO, the truth still remains. Three Things I've known and been close to a few alcoholics that were destroyed by booze. My favorite boss who was a friend, too, lost many clients and later the business she operated, lost her husband and kids and then died of scirosis (SP) of the liver, alone. I've got two nephews; one died at 18 driving drunk, the other got fired from his teaching position because of his drinking. I don't know that any of these people attended AA but maybe it would have helped. That's not the point, though. It was their drinking that was their distruction.

Sis Tomi,
Kudos to you for knowing what you have to do to take care of yourself. I believe that so many people who have problems with alcohol or drugs never admit to themselves that they need that help.
You are a very strong person.

Three Things And as for being strong, there have been times I've hated being strong! I didn't want to be. I just wanted to lay down and die or better yet, let someone else do it for me. LOL That never has worked for me for some reason! Three Things Three Things Ah, well... Three Things

Guilty of nicotine and caffeine! Three Things

Oh... not caffeine. I drink decaf... whew!

Seven things in groups of three's?? Actually, there was another grouping of threes but it would probably be too controversial to post here... you know, FSH? They are the constants. Three Things

and for those of you thinking you're home free with caffeine free diet soda... most of that is using aspartame, which is a drug proven to cause depression!

I became aware of the "decaf" thing as I became aware how sensitive I was to caffiene. Even decaf keeps me awake, which I think is partly due to expectation but not totally, I think the expectation is amplifying the effect of the lessor amount of caf in decaf.

Do you have any data about current data on the amount of caf with modern decaf techniques? I remember researching back when Sanka was all the rage... the label posted "97% caffiene free" and that was severely misleading, because it meant that only three percent of the "material" in the cup was caffiene and of course regular coffee isn't 100% caffiene... most of it is water of course and other things that make it "coffee" including the caffiene. So the number on the label seemed to imply that it had 97% less caffiene than regular coffee... in truth Sanka had about half the caffiene of regular coffee. A big difference but certainly not "caffiene free".

I would imagine modern methods do a better job of removing caffiene but I don't know how much is left in a modern cup of decaf.

I stay away from all soda, tea, soda, diet soda (yuk) etc. Sugar is my big problem. I still drink root beer (but not Barq's... that has caffiene added...) and some other sugar drinks. Unfortunately I have a difficult time drinking straight water.

well as with everything, you have to read and understand the labels...

most decaf stuff contains 4-5 mg of caffeine per 8oz cup (based against regular is 100mg)
<font color=green>
most green teas have at least 40mg unless they are true herbal green teas and then they have none... but they have to state that just because they are herbal doesn't mean they don't have caffeine!

don't assume...

I know I'm not 100% caffeine free. Decaf just reduces the amount of caffeine to a safe level where it doesn't give me palpitations. That's all I care about. Chocolate does the same thing to me. I just watch how much I eat.

Aspretame causes depression AND memory loss, therefore I drink my homegrown and homebrewed tea and sometimes flavored water, thanks very much. Three Things

"Unfortunately I have a difficult time drinking straight water."

Get bottled water and add a twist of lime or lemon. That's what I do.

Doesn't work for me. Once in a while I can do flavored seltzer or something but water just never goes down well... bottled, tap, flavored, whatever.

I've been drinking water for the past few days because I'm out of beverages in the house... it is very hard to take my meds with water especially but I'm trying to at least force myself to have a few glasses a day.

Do you know what the difference is between green tea and black tea? I didn't know, but found out recently. They are the same plant, but black tea is fermented, while green tea is closer to the natural state. Green tea has some caffeine, but black tea has much more, as the fermentation process increases the caffeine. Herbal teas refer to preparation as tea rather than to the tea plant, so any tea made of something other than tea tree leaves may be considered herbal tea. Most of these are naturally free of caffeine.

I avoid caffeine generally - chocolate is my biggest caffeine source. The tea I use for headaches has 17 mg of caffeine in it, as it contains some green tea. I figure that's ok, since tylenol has a whole lot more caffeine than that, and I don't need it very often.

Drinking water, or water with a bit of lemon, works ok for me except that I just don't get around to drinking enough water. Usually I make a quart of herbal tea - usually SJW with peppermint, or various other combinations, and keep it in the refrigerator. I drink it without sugar or any sweetener, and try to remember to get through the whole quart in one day. Sometimes I might start on a second quart. If you need a sweetener, Stevia is an option to consider - it is an herb that is naturally very sweet but it isn't a sugar. You can either grow a plant, and add a leaf from the Stevia plant, or you can buy it in powdered form - a little goes a long way. You could probably just put some lemon and some stevia in a cup of water and be pretty close to lemonade (especially if you add ice and a sprig of mint), but I haven't tried it.

<font color=orange>"If a light beckons to you, follow it. If it leads you into the quagmire, you'll probably find your way out of it again; but if you don't follow it, you'll be plagued for the rest of your life by the thought that perhaps it was your star." Friedrich Hebbet</font color=orange>

Hey, love is a drug too. As I feel the caffeine lovers of the world have been grossly under-represented here, I give you the following original composition entitled 'Ode to Caffeine' (the best I could come up with at 5:30a.m.) Ahem.........

Coffee, tea, beckoning me
Am or Pm
You are a drea-em

I love you, I love you
Praise be the caffeine Gods
(Hey, have you tried those neat little pods?)

Claims of insomnia, headaches and shakes
If I actually worked
I'd need 12 coffee breaks!

I love you, I love you
My hazelnut buddy
Just thinking of you makes me feel all nutty

So what's all this fuss about an addiction?
All I know is without you
I'd have a conniption!

I've got that caffeine monkey
He's a ridin' my back
Hey, it's better than a panic attack

So to those who proclaim you're a nasty old habit
Hey, some of us enjoy
Feeling like Ricochet Rabbit!

(bing bing bing Three Things)
