For about a month now I've really been wanting a job, my T and I have been discussing this and feel it'd be a great thing for me, I'd have less time to spend pondering and more ""busy"" time. But I am scared to DEATH!!!! BAHHHHHH.....I'm just 17, so I havent worked a job before regularlly, I know nothing about them, and with my mental probs it only makes it seem more intense.
The options of jobs for me are a department store or a movie theatre...the movie theatre seems the best sense our area is small they have little customers. Anyway...I've thought about calling and saying " hey, I was wondering if you had any job openings, blah blah blah"....anyway...I'm so scared to do this, I mean i've never had a job, everyone goes through this but does mental instablity hurt this? Anyway guys I'm scared...I don't know anything abouta job and I'm afraid I won't ask questions..... Please help...its not set in stone that I will get a job yet...but I do want too... |

I would do the department store. I was scared like you when I graduated college, didn't know how to go out and where to get a job and went to Sears and it seemed a bit easier because there were routines and forms to fill out and not so much "personal" talking to people. Plus they needed more people (so the chance of getting job was better) and the chances of them having other employees my age was better, etc.

I started working at about 13...There's nothing to be scared of. A movie theatre sounds like such a great job! I think you should definitely take the risk and go for it. Whats the worst that could happen?

I used to own and manage fast food restaurants, and I hired a lot of teens. Many of them were very scared when it was the first job they had ever had. You are not alone there.
The movie job sounds good. You will be working with people your own age primarily. And movies are usually a fun place. Before you call them, look them up online, and see if there is an application form to fill out. Many employers are accepting apps online now. If not, go down in person and ask for the manager. A face goes farther than a telephone voice. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

Moonkin,
It's normal to feel scared about applying for a new job. This doesn't go away with age and experience -- finding a new job can be loaded with anxiety. The idea is to tame the beast anxiety, with lots of good ideas like people here have already given. Having a job will definitely cut back on your pondering, which can make everything seem worse. I like the sound of the movie theater, because people who go to the theater are usually in a good mood. I know you'll make a good decision. BflatGary makes a good point about seeing if you can find an application online. Even if you can't, and go down to the theater, and speak to the manager like Gary suggested, it will put you ahead of the crowd. If you find a job you like, and do well at, it will build your self-esteem, and give you valuable experience to put on your future resume. Let us know how it goes. ![]() EJ ![]() |
