Not only do I have to put up with being woken up when people come in drunk late at night (last night was the first time I managed to sleep through the night in a week!), but people have started using my things in the kitchen as well...today it was two teaspoons, a glass (which I can't find now)...and someone threw my milk in the bin!! I hate living in halls! (Rant) It's not like they used it and then threw the carton away - this was a half-full pint of milk, use by date not until the 16th, and someone threw it away. I hate living in halls! (Rant)

The rational part of me knows that whoever is doing this isn't doing it deliberately to hurt me (it's unlikely to be all the one person, anyway, and I doubt they even know whose stuff it is they're using), but the paranoid part of me is wondering if there's some sign above me saying "Hey, use my stuff!" I hate living in halls! (Rant) My cheese grater, my scissors, multiple teaspoons, my can opener...and this sort of thing used to happen at school as well. People would either ask once before borrowing something of mine and then assume that they could borrow anything else as well without having to check first, or else they'd ask before borrowing something and just hand it on to anyone else who asked them for it. I had to give up bringing in tippex to school because other people would use it more than I would!

I have two projects to work on for design class, I have tutorials in almost every subject this week, I had orchestra rehearsals both days last weekend and it's going to be even more this coming one, I have a test on Thursday...and now this. I'm pissed off!! I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Oh, that's horrible. I'd be making rude signs on all my stuff with my initials/name in large, bright, letters. I'd be so pissed I'd be asking each person using that fridge, "Did you throw away my carton of milk?" and making such a fuss that they wouldn't do it again, that's for sure I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Oooo! And you could also make a note asking who drank your Science Project that was in the milk carton.

Thanks, Perna and Doh, that made me laugh. I hate living in halls! (Rant) Unfortunately, seeing as I'm not a medical or science student, I'm not sure if it would work...and they didn't actually drink any of the milk as far as I could tell...but it'd still be pretty funny. I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Anyway, I wrote a note last night saying that whoever did it owes me a new milk, but the only response I got was someone writing "Go away!" (don't know who)...I'm trying not to take this personally. I hate living in halls! (Rant)

I don't have any advice, but maybe you could get a lock on your bedroom door and keep your stuff there?

We went back to study at a University when we were 39 & moved into a hall of residence I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant) we were there 2 years. It was the cheapest option.

We had cupboards in the kitchen that you could padlock, so they couldn't steal the cutlery & crockery etc, but we never found a way of stopping them stealing the refrigerated food. We tried all those signs, but they had no shame, even when we walked into the kichen one night & three of them were eating our food, lolol, they didn't care I hate living in halls! (Rant)
The second year we were there we bought a little 2nd hand bar fridge & put it in our room. Might you be able to do that ?

The problem with them coming in drunk in the middle of the night when you have to get up early is insoluble, lolol. Maybe ear plugs, lolol.

Do they MAKE you stay in the halls there ? It is a free choice here, where you live, as long as you can afford it.
We stayed in the halls coz they paid for that on our scholarship, but if you had papers to prepare it was better to do them in the library.

When we went to Uni out of high school we lived at home first & then in a flat (appartment?). If we'd had to live in a hall at that age we would never haved coped.

Good luck (((((Rio))))) & rant any time, there must be large numbers of us here who have encountered these problems I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant) in many differing environments too,

you shoulda tried communes I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant)
there they steal your stuff & then you have to have 5 nights of 6 hours semi-political/therapeutic discussion about why they did it I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Thanks, Labyssum. Luckily, our bedroom doors have locks on them already - a couple of bananas went missing yesterday so I've started keeping them in my room now. I'd keep more stuff in my room, but since it's at the other end of the corridor from the kitchen it would be a real pain having to take everything through if I wanted to cook...guess this will have to do for now.

Thanks, Zorah. That's good you had cupboards you could padlock, we don't here. Lovely! I hate living in halls! (Rant) I can see why you got the fridge! Unfortunately, we're not allowed to bring in any extra furniture to our rooms, and I think they count fridges in that.

Ear plugs would be great, but I might sleep through my alarm! I hate living in halls! (Rant)

They don't make you stay in halls, but it's cheaper than getting a flat...most people either stay in halls or at home in their first year (I'm too far away to stay at home), and then move into a flat the following year. It's actually fine here most of the time during the day - I think my flatmates and their friends are nocturnal. I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Thanks. (((Zorah))) Guess so...my parents said their food got stolen when they were at uni too!

Wow! Communes sound...interesting. I hate living in halls! (Rant)

I'm sorry, Rio, but I was wanting to call Scotland Yard for you, see if they could round up the bananas!

That's horrible that you can't trust your flatmates; anyway you can get a food locker or something, all your own with a way to secure it? I'd move in a trunk or something; let it double as how I move to/from home during term as well as a place to keep "my" stuff. Get a good enough one and put some pillows on it for extra seating?

Thanks, Perna...I know it's not much, but it's the principle, dammit! I hate living in halls! (Rant) I hate living in halls! (Rant)

Thing is, it could be my flatmates' friends for all I know...some of them seem to spend more time here than I do! A food locker might work, but I can't help thinking that doing something that stands out might just encourage them. I hate living in halls! (Rant) Anyway, everything that's gone so far is easily replaced...it'd just be nice if I didn't have to. One of my flatmates said someone had used her milk as well, so I'm not the only one.
