2:45 Am a sheriff called asking for me. Of course I instantly knew my parents or brother had been killed. But no, he started asking questions about my Chevy Malibu. Well not only have I driven a Saturn for 11 years, I have never owned a Malibu. He was nice and said sorry to bother me. So, now it is after 3 AM, I have had the biggest startle imaginable--the loss of my family. How do I go back to sleep so I can get up and function at work in the morning?

Oh, that's horrible. My husband had that happen but it was for a car he'd owned 30 years previously and had paid to JUNK! They'd found it on the side of some road and were trying to charge him and fine him and all sorts of things and he had a heck of a time convincing them he wasn't the owner and hadn't been for a zillion years (not like he'd kept any paperwork that long).

Yes, the phone call in the middle of the night is one use of the phone that makes it a bad technology for me. I remember waiting a couple weeks for the one for my father so when it finally comes it's a relief but also I'm stuck with that on-edge feeling about the phone ringing for the rest of my life.

was it the sheriff or a deputy?

if it was a deputy, I would report it to the Sheriff

similar incident happened to me many years ago and the
deputy who called at 4 a.m. was reprimanded for
the call because it was not an emergency situation

At that time of the morning I can see why you would assume something awful had happened. I hope you were able to get some sleep. ((((((((((((((((DePressMe)))))))))))))))

(((((DepressMe)))))))

I really, really know that feeling. Some time ago my boyfriend & I were taking a weekend getaway at a freind's riverhouse. The phone rang at like 4 a.m.. The only phone in the small little riverhouse is in the kitchen so, I had to get up and walk there. In my dead sleep all I could think of is it was my mom and here I was 22 miles away! (She's almost blind so I constantly worry about her.) This lady (not a police officer) just assumed I was this guy's mother and said, Ma'm your son has been in an accident but he's ok. Her voice was trembling. I kinda tried to focus from the sleep and said, "Who are you looking for?" And she said, "Mrs. SO & So". And I said, "I'm sorry you have the wrong number."

I had a hard time going back to sleep for two reasons. One - all I could think about is what if that was my mom - what would I do 22 miles away? And #2 - I hope that poor person was not out with a drunk driver (our county pretty much revolves around alcohol and partying). I went back to bed but it took me awhile to get back to sleep so - I totally understand. And it's hard to function with broken sleep.

Funny how such as small thing can affect you in such a big way! I know! I hope you get more than your 40 winks tonight to recover!

Well, I managed to get some broken sleep. I did get a little paranoid that maybe I did own a chevy and just not remember it. I do forget a lot of things. But, no, I am pretty sure I never owned a Malibu. I did lose my mazda a few times--but that had to do with bars and I was always able to locate it the next day. Thanks for all your support!

D, I'm so sorry. Ever since my father's stroke I worry when I get a call like that. It's a horrible feeling.

Huh, I wonder how my father would feel if he knew I felt that way?

(((Me friend)))

Glad things are okay. When I moved into my old house with my ex-wife, one of the first nights there, a police officer came by at around 11:30, scaring us and waking us out of sleep to ask if "so and so" was there...

We said, "We just moved here, and no one lives here by that name," and he said, "Oh, okay, sorry to wake you up, etc."

It was quite odd.

I know its their job, but sometimes it scares the unholy crap out of you...

Hi DePressMe,

Hope you had a good day at work in spite of everything.

As much as it was scarey, I'm also glad the deputy didn't really want you.

I did check--I have the plates on my car. Who knows what was going on. I just hope it all works out for whoever is missing their Chevy Malibu.

Maybe the Chevy Malibu was used to commit a murder or kidnapping and he urgently needed evidence, you never know. Or he could have just been a bored sheriff, which in that case, you should give him an earful.

Hmm... I'd check into that if possible, make sure someone hasn't taken out a loan on a Chevy Malibu in your name. I don't mean to startle you about that, but I've been attending these classes at my local PD and they were talking about identity theft. That's definitely a red flag for you!

As for being awoken in the middle of the night with a start, I was in college and had gone with a bunch of friends to spend the weekend at one of our friend's house. It was during Oktoberfest and my friend was having troubles with his car. The lights went out and he was loosing power so we pulled off onto a side street to check it out. Well the cops were doing check points where they pull over everyone. Well they saw us with our lights off and followed us. They pulled up behind us and asked us why we were driving with the lights off. Well we said that's why we pulled off to a side road, we didn't know what was going on. Anyhow, the police CHAPLIAN was along with the officer. He called my friend's parents around 1:30am, he said, "Hello Mrs. So and So, this is the Blank Police Department Chaplain calling about your son. Then he went on to say how her son was having car trouble and needed someone to come drive us all back to her place. His mom said it was the worst way to wake up EVER!

My fiance is going through police academy right now and I was at work I got a call from the PD saying they needed to talk to me (I thought something was wrong with my fiance). I just about had a heart attack... turns out they needed my help in locating someone!

I understand how terrible that must have been to get a call in the middle of the night like that.

When I moved into my new apartment for weeks we were awaken at all hours of the morning by the sheriff and police looking for the people that I think lived there before us. They actually made us let them come in and search for this guy they were looking for. Woke my daughter up and everything. I was pissed.
