Hello,
I've been taking different meds for anxiety, adhd etc. over the years. I've always had to stop because some side effect became too much for me to handle. Recently, I've tried natural therapies including herbs and some vitamins. While there is some relief, it's never enough for my messed up mind. I read an article recently, where a doctor had helped clients through larger amounts of vitamins and minerals such as B6, B3, folic acid, selenium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin C soy protein and fish oil. I have been taking a multi but I never paid much attention to how much I was getting of the other vitamins or minerals. He advises a regime of higher doses of these nutrients divided into 3 doses per day after each meal. I've decided to try this since I am becoming hopeless with my adhd, anxiety and irritability. Has anyone else tried something to this effect and if so, did it work or has it been working? Best to all, Natalie |

I tried so thing were you take a nurotransmitter test - you can google that - once you get the results back you will be recommended some amino acid therapy along with fish oil and a high quality multi vitamin.
It will defiantly help with anxiety. I'm gonna guess your low in GABA at least so the amino acids for that would be taurine, and l theanine. This treatment take along time to work. As you comtinue everyday to take the supplements your body uses them to make the nurotransmitters and after 6-8 mouths you really see improvments. I've also tried the approach you are looking into I had blood test which test for under/ over methylation, pyrole disorder, some other things there's a book called "nutrient power" by William j Walsh that explains this. Anyway I was taking high doses of folate and b12 and it was giving me some bad side effects so I stopped. My program was suppose to make things worse for the first few weeks and then get better but having a full time job I just couldn't see going through what I was feeling so I stopped. Now I went back to the amino acid program and I'm consider a small dose of medication cuz I been getting angry out burst and mood swings. If you want to talk more about it you can pm anyone. |

EPA Omega 3 1000 - 1800 mg/day is wonderful for depression. I tried it & it worked well.
Thres in the DHA Omega 3 & my mind even started working again like it hadn't in years. Other vitamins are important because when there is an imbalance, it creates an imbalance in the brain chemistry also & that's when you get the mental illnesses though there are other reasons also.....this is one of the many reasons for it though.

No, I haven't but I'd really like to. I haven't because of a lack of money to pay for the supplements.
I have been experimenting with my diet some and definitely see some correlation between eating regular meals containing lots of the foods recommended for mood disorders and my anxiety level and how clear my mind feels. |

I just want to point out that mental illness CANNOT be healed. Rather it can be managed.

Do not take that hope away. Vitamins have not worked for me thus far but I have taken fish oil on and off for years with no effect on mood - although I have no doubt it is helping my body. Vitamin B and D were to expensive to continue for zero effect (except making my pee smell bad!) Find what works for you, it can take a while but you'll get there. |

I would advise caution. GABA can be contraindicated depending on your diagnosis. In addition, there is no regulation of supplements for the treatment of medical conditions. So, you need to be careful as to quality of ingredients and reliability of manufacturers. There are practitioners who specialize in nutritional treatments. I'd go to one of them. They could save you time trying to figure out what to take and in what doses and for how long.

Vitamins and minerals have made no difference for treating my depression and C-PTSD. I do not believe in taking supplements as many are dangerous and not adequately tested.

I think that supplements and vitamins get lumped together all the time when they aren't always the same thing. Fish oils do have regulations and testing, I know because I've read up on them. Plus replacing a true vitamin supplement to alleviate depression symptoms....well then replacing the root deficiency may have addressed the cause of the depression itself, which is quite different then using herbs and vitamins as a holistic medicine or using homeopathy

High dose vit d prescribed to me by a doctor for deficiency positively impacted my moods for months until I stoped taking them. Preparing to start them again.

It is true that supplements like fish oil are regulated and tested. But the regulation/testing is very different than what a medication would have to undergo. Before a medication is approved the FDA has to be shown studies that it treats x condition in x population x percent of the time. And all and any side effects have to be clearly listed, even when the odds of them occurring are low. For something like fish oil, the company doesn't have to demonstrate that it helps/cures any disease. Because of that, they can't claim it does either. Regulation is pretty much limited to "ok yes this is fish oil and you're not secretly poisoning people." Side effects/interactions don't have to be listed. For example there are certain herbs/supplements that can dangerously interact with certain medications, and also some that are dangerous during pregnancy. But the manufacturer doesn't have to put this on the bottle. I'm not saying that supplements aren't useful--they certainly can be. But you do have to be careful because there is less regulation. IMHO amino acids are EXTREMELY underrated. The one that's helped me the most is l-glutamine, but it is the one that rarely comes up when talking about amino acids and mental health. I have chronic PTSD and it's helped my anxiety and triggering IMMENSELY!
Caution is good, but don't be deterred. Holistic docs are very hard to find. You CAN do this on your own. Sometimes your body becomes deficient in......whatever......so supplementation is necessary. Docs Rx mega doses of VIT B and D because it's impossible to "catch up" from a normal diet alone. The same can be said for other supplements, vitamins, minerals, too. And once your body has a sufficient level of certain supplements, you can taper down/off. My mom did so with vitamin D, I did the same with amino acids. I don't understand why people actually are so.....unaware (to the point of hostile denial)......that a poor/deficient diet can cause so many problems, exacerbate symptoms, etc. |
