Depending on what you do, yeah it can be serious. I have it and I do a lot of impulsive behaviors that can actually kill me...but I don't see it as harmful most of the time...

Welcome to the club.

would say the word for BPD is "difficult", as it is seems, at least from my end, that it is nearly impossible to live a normal "healthy" life with BPD, without SOME form of ongoing treatment to regulate the intense emotions and impulsivity, be it therapy or meds. And the treatment that works for eack person can be very hard to find. i find the antipsych, Geodon works for me and have heard good things about the antipsych group for BPD. So yes it is a hard disorder to have to take on, but it is managable with the right treatment. best wishes!

Hi, Mia, borderline is kind of hard to pigeonhole, really. It isn't a psychotic disorder so no, it isn't serious in THAT way. But it does tend to be a chronic disorder and some of its symptoms can include self-defeating behaviors like doing really impulsive things such as risky sexual encounters, going on shopping sprees, eating or drinking too much, etc.

But the good news is, it CAN get better. There are quite a few meds that help and also certain kinds of therapy. A lot of pdocs used to be pessimistic about the outcome of BPD (they thought people with BPD just didn't get better) but they're learning now that they were WRONG about that.

I've been diagnosed with BPD too and I'm optimistic--I think I'm doing a lot better than I was even a couple of years ago.

Good luck and welcome to the club! BORDERLINE?

BPD sucks!!!!!!

its a shite diagnosis used by twat shrinks when they cant find one better to label you with, and they cant treat you easily
its the dumping ground of diagnosis
MH services hate BPDs, and they avoid u like the plague if they can.

but, yeah, i would say it can be a serious illness.
some cope really well with it, and if you can get decent treatment you will do well, but others, like me, dont cope well with it at all, it can be dangerous, quite a high percentage of BPDs kill themselves,

I am always reassuring myself telling myself to be calm and stop thinking irrationally. Its very exausting and when it gets to be too exausting then comes the outbursts of anger and everyone looks at me like Im crazy. But I have been told I can get it under control but I fear my doc has yet to get me on the right meds and I am constantly switching meds. I just want to have a normal life but it seems out of my reach. So yeah Id say its serious, but it takes a strong person to live with it!!!!!

It's hard. It is a pervasive pattern of traits and behavior and ways of interpreting the world, and the challenge is to change those fundamental aspects of how you have learned to cope with everything. That can be pretty overwhelming. Meds can help with symptoms, but they don't change those patterns, so that means we have to do the work ourselves.

Do you know why you got the dx?
What symptoms do you have that led to them giving you that dx?

Do your symptoms bother you?

A lot?

I guess that is about how serious it is...

<font color="purple"> Just like everything else in life, it depends on the person and what symptoms one has, how one reacts to those symptoms, the impact they have on ones daily life, and whether or not one has success with managing it. For me it is serious and an awful vicious cycle that is complicated by and comlpicates my other disorders.... Right now I am not doing too bad, well comapred to most times anyway... Learn as much as you can.... It may help you , as it has me, to journal.... I am more aware of triggers, my body reactions, my mental sensations, my needs, and wehn I am in need of help before it gets out of control... Not always, but I am more aware.... There have been times when I have put myself and others in a lot of danger and trouble because of my BPD ( along with the other disorders I have).....
So yes, I would say it is serious...

welcome to the club! BORDERLINE?......
Personality Disorders are a different animal from a treatment perspective.....PersonalityDO are more "hard wiring" than software problems...if you get the metaphor...that's the best way I can explain it.

Meds & Therapy can help treat the manifestations but not the DO itself.

on a lighter note....more females have BPD..... The most infamous female serial killer Aileen Wornous was BPD........

just to indicate the broad range of severity BPD can have......

One positive I learned with my diagnosis...certain behaviors I did repeatedly were now attributable to my BPD, so I could stop beating myself up for making the same mistakes......some comfort....Like I could say..."you know why you do this & what is the usual outcome

BPD can also mimick the symptoms of Bipolar disorder BORDERLINE?

There is a promising new behavioral therapy called DBT....by Linehan
ask your Doc.

well, its serious for me. i hope u have a better time with it. i can't maintain a friendship, let alone a relationship.

my moods wildly fluctiate at times. sometimes right in the middle of a conversation. it sucks beyond all suckdom.

geodon has helped some, but not always.

i have no feelings of self-worth and am constantly degrading myself. i really hate it.

Hi Janet.

I have bpd as well as several other dx's. Last year. I attended a once weekly group session teaching the techniques and methods used to help regulate the symptoms. It was Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and our handbook was authored by Marsha Linehan. It was a great help, and I do still use the techniques from time to time. I also see a therapist and take my medications as prescribed.

Good Luck!
