I tried to hard todeal with the fireworks. I had the radio up the TV up I used all my tools. I ended up in a flashback so severe I ran into a wall running. I then curled up on the floor in a ball crying and I decided it was time for assistance. So I called the local mental health criisis line. At first she was helpful but then she said that this is an opportunity to grow. This is a good thing. I started laughing. I would like to see the people who say this have to live like this. I cut my face and it will probably bruise from running into a wall. Yeah I will grow thanks. Flooding alone with unmedicated PTSD is not a good thing Probably should go get stitches but Im to afraid of leaving the house.Tellme again how is this a good thing????? what you need to do now is call the supervisor of the woman that spoke to you tell them what was said, then let them know about urgent care, they are suppose to record most calls for the safety of clients, she needs to be repremanded and retrained

yeah - maybe you can just let the crisis line know that stuff like that is really not appreciated. You know they were *trying* to be helpful, but crisis is not the time for something as fluffy as "this is a growing experience".

It must have been so frustrating to hear that. When people tell me fluffy happy &^%$ like that, I just want to scream. Fact is, what we are talking about is a long-term disturbance in our lives, one that most people can't fathom, let alone truly empathize with. Of course she meant well, but it felt like she was invalidating what was a scary experience to you, one that brought back memories of other awful times and a general sense of danger.

I hope you are feeling better.

Thanks everyone. Im not really sure what i think now. I know I hate it also when people say stuff like that.I would like them to live with this illness. She told me remember its not happening now. However to me at the time it sure felt like it was. If I could get my thinking mind and my emotional mind on the same page well it would be easier to hear that. I decided next fourth of july if I am not better my therapists are spending the night at my house.

I agree with the posters above as well. You deserved a better attitude and sponsor or crisis hotline worker more trained in PTSD. Most hotlines are not always appropriately trained. When you feel better, I would suggest talking to one of the workers or the superviser to let them know that consumers with PTSD need more help then they can provide. there are numerous courses in the United States that can be taken for free for hotline workers that are underprovisioned in PTSD and other disorders such as Bipolar and Depression as well. Hopefully if you have to call again in an emergency it will work out better than this time. Take care MINI. PM anytime. Soidhonia.

I hear you loud and clear MINIME. I'm always saying my head gets it but my heart hasn't caught up yet. I can't seem to get them to connect.

(It isn't happening now.)
That is one of the main/key phrases to tell those with PTSD who are being triggered/flashbacking. It takes many, many, many (shall I say MANY?) times of hearing this before it begins to affect the thinking and allow the person to begin to realize that truth. It's the nature of the beast. Try not to feel as though you are being minimized with how you are feeling, but that you are getting good therapeutic responses to how you are feeling.

PTSD makes it so a person stops thinking rationally at times. The reality, as you know, "changes" during those times. It takes logical thoughts and words to help become grounded again, in yes, those are bad feelings but they aren't happening now, you are here now and this is now and everything is really okay right now.

(((((big hugs)))) "mental health crisis line" whatever Trust me, I've been through the worst part of PTSD and can often calm myself when triggered. This hurricane season is tough for me, as the accident happened during a thunderstorm (part of why no one helped me-they didn't want to get wet???) There was a T storm last night that was right over top of my home, the house shuttered each thunderbolt. But though I readied the closet, I didn't go. You can get to where PTSD doesn't run your life.

((sky)). Thanks. Its hard to hear its not happening now. It is in my brain. I have never had the experiences to have someone whith me during a flashback really besides kids. My emdr therapist has been with me a couple of times and I can hear her but she seems so far away. PTSD is such a pain.

Please do remember that the type of "therapy" most hotline volunteers give out is Rogerian by nature. This is "humanism."

"Humanism is permeated (1) by such concepts as external validity, meaning,
understanding, subjectivity, relevance, and value, and (2) by such goals or phenomena
as authenticity, self-actualisation, creativity, development of meaningful human
relationships, knowledge of innermost feelings, expanding one’s awareness, and love.
In a sense, humanism represents (1) a return to common-sense psychology, in which a
person’s goals, feeling, desires, and the like are a primary concern; and (2) a revival
of interest in such Christian values as love, concern, goodness. "

It doesn't give much support to someone suffering with PTSD. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is good for learning to live with PTSD, by changing you outlook etc. CBT is a therapeutic approach that addresses the thoughts that reinforce negative belief systems, and the behavior that occurs as a response to those beliefs. Flashbacks are responses to things the brain/mind believe are happening now.
