i'm just wondering how long it took before you noticed a change in mood for those taking it for depression. i've been taking about 2400 mg for three weeks now and am not noticing any change so far. i was really hoping it was going to help me some.

I didn't really feel a difference when I was taking fish oil.

Right now, I'm taking Folic Acid to supplement my anti-depressant, and I seem to be in a better mood.

It really won't do much for depression by itself. It really will make your heart very healthy though. That's a good thing.

I think it depends on the person and might only help for minor not clinical depression, But don't stop taking it because as the other poster said - it's good for your heart and brain - helps with concentration and beautiful skin. Make sure it's a good quality fish oil and not one that might have bad things in it. I also recommend taking 1,000 mg of Vit D - most people are deficient and there are new recommendations now. You can also get fish oil the natural way by eating salmon or if you like sardines/oysters.

Bloom 3,
This web site has some fairly good information about the omega oils...I read in the article that the amount our bodies actually absorb may be not be equal to the dose we are taking.
I use fish oils for inflammation among other things.

Bloom- I take omega 3 and DHA flax oil everyday and I notice if I dont take it (along with other supplements I take) I feel yucky and out of sorts.

And also D3 is very important. The new recommendations are at least 5000mg/day. I take in drops (liquid I find easier) about 8000mg/day which is 4 tiny drops in the am and then 4 more in the pm.

thanks everybody for the responses. i'm too tired to respond individually right now. i've also just started taking 5,000 i.u. of vitamin D. i believe that is the highest amount to take safely daily unless that has changed. i did read it also matters how much omega 6 one takes to impact the omega 3s. processed foods have lots of omega 6 and most people have too much omega 6 in their diet. i don't know if that is having any effect with me. i want a magic pill to fix me.

please get a blood test before you take vit D - most people are deficient but the deficiency varies & it can actually be harmful to take too much vit D if you don't need it.
when you take vitamin D you also usually need to take a calcium supplement (unless you drink litres of milk everyday like me ) because they only absorb in conjunction.
Thanks for this!

I will have to investigate further. I thought the recommendation was at least 5000 units/mg. I will have to check that out.

For sure take a calcium supplement as well. I think even salas dressing has too much omega 6. It seems to be in everything. How is your bloodwork?

Ditto on the magic pill...

Jme, but vitamins and other supplements can interact in a negative way with many of the meds we take...I learned that the hard way.
It's wise to do some research before starting them.

In Peace

i haven't had any bloodwork lately but i know i'm low on vitamin d. i usually do lots of research so i'm careful not to take things that contraindicate or in too high of doses.

blue, i did read in several places that 5,000 iu is the most one can safely take. i did see one article that said 10,000 iu but only under a doctor's care. it looks like doing it on your own no more than 5,000 is a good idea. it can be quite toxic if you take too much so better safe than sorry.

Quote:
Although vitamin D can be toxic at high doses, the latest research suggests that kids and adults can take 5,000 IUs or more a day in supplement form without any ill effects.
us news

Quote:
Doses greater than 2,000 IU a day of vitamin D3 are not generally recommended without the guidance of a health care professional. Signs and symptoms of a toxic reaction include loss of appetite, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive thirst and urination. While taking up to 10,000 IU daily appears to be safe for most people (46, 47), taking 50,000 IU a day regularly can give toxic blood levels and could cause weight loss, paleness, constipation, fever, and a number of serious complications. Long-term over-consumption of vitamin D supplements may cause high blood pressure and premature hardening of the arteries. Bones may weaken and a calcium buildup in muscles and other soft tissues may occur. Kidney damage may also develop.
from wholehealthmd.com which is a great site to look up contraindications for supplements, herbs, and prescription meds

thanks jenna. mine are lemon flavored so no fishy burps for moi.

while i'm not noticing any difference with the omega 3s i am with the vitamin D. i've only been taking that a week and it is helping me with my sleep schedule and energy since i have been staying up later and later into the wee hours. i've always been a night owl but it's gotten pretty ridiculous the last few years. i want to get back onto a more normal schedule so i'm not so out of sync with the world.

I take Omega-3s to help lower blood pressure and for heart health. I take the non-fish kind so I don't taste fish, made from flax. I also try to put extra flax in muffins and such when I bake. I also eat fish a couple of times a week. I guess those omega-3s are good for a lot of things. A cure-all?

I take (1) 1200mg Omega-3 fish oil softgel everyday and it definitely does something for me. If I miss a week, I feel pretty bad.
