Has anyone taken Deplin for depression. If so, how did it work. I am thinking about asking my dr to switch me from Abilify to Deplin as Deplin isn't supposed to have the side effects like Abilfy does.

Deplin is a supplement called L-methylfolate. Low folate levels in the body have been linked to cause depression and other mental illness. For those who have low folate, deplin can help a lot, plus it is capable of helping other medication work better. For those who don't have low folate, it really won't help much. That was me, it did not help me.

My pdoc tried me on Deplin, but it really didn't do a thing for me. Some people do find it helpful though. As with all things, it's a matter of you won't really know until you try it.

I was just given some samples of Deplin and have been on it for a couple weeks. It seems to help a little bit, but I just checked and my insurance does not cover any part of it, so it would cost me over $1,000 a year for a daily supply. I don't think I'll continue it after the samples run out.

Yeah, insurance didn't cover it for me either and it was much more expensive than any copay I was paying for any prescription drugs. Wasn't worth the cost.

I was given samples of Deplin to augment the Celexa I am on. I noticed no change at all.

I am on deplin now with little effect. Maybe a slight boost to my lexapro? Anyway my psych said that 30% of white folks have the folic acid issue that deplin solves, so its kind of more likely to not work than it is to work. Worth a try though, if you are white 30% is a lot of us . I read the pamphlet for it at his office and he also told me their pamphlet REALLY stretches the effectiveness lol. Give it a shot though, it really has 0 consequence if it doesn't work if you can get free trials like I did.

I did a lot of research on Deplin for most people it won't do a thing. But you are right it has no side effects, and for me it has worked WONDERS, I felt the effect right away. Helped with the depression, had more energy, and the quality of my sleep went WAY up and the amount went down. Went from sleeping 9+ hours a night and waking up exhausted to 7 hours a night and waking up feeling so refreshed.

I hate bring old threads back to life but! There is a blood test that will tell if you are lacking folate in your brain. If you have this, the folic acid can't pass through the brain blood barrier but by breaking it down to the L-Methylfolate that can pass thru. thats how my psch. DR explaind it to me. And my blood test show it should work for me, and boy does it. DR switched me to Prestiq 50mg from 200mg Zoloft. Throw in the 15 mg Deplin and I am almost too happy with tons of energy, any more and I think it would be manic. Going to to talk to the DR tomorrow about splitting the deplin in half as the Prestiq is time release and can't be split. Would just like to tone it down a bit. Has anyone split there Deplin in half and is it ok before I ask DR.

Crashed Again is right on the money! Before you know whether or not to try it, the blood test is critical. I know I'm not going to say this correctly, but here's the gist of it, from what I could understand. Maybe one of the mods can fill in the gap. The test my psychiatrist ordered for me actually looks to see if your DNA is "mutated". There are varying degrees, which he went into detail with me. If there is no mutation (I HATE that word LOL) or if there is only 1 abnormality, the Deplin is not likely to help. If you have 2 or more ( I had 2 ), the Deplin could make a significant improvement in your seratonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels. I WISH I could tell you how it's working, but I just got the prescription on Friday. Because the cost is MUCH cheaper using mail order ($100 for a 90 day supply) thru my insurance, it will be a few days before I have any results. I'll be glad to share them when I do!

LookN4Answers, you remembered that DNA gobbly gook better than I did and yeh I have 2 screwed up receptors also. I have only been taking it since 2/7/13. I could feel it after I think 5 days. My Psch DR said it takes 4 to 6 weeks to completly get into your system, thats where I am now. I sure like the energy and feeling of well being as it sure beats the alturnative. I would just like to tone it down just a very small touch. I will ask my DR on tuesday about that splitting the Deplin. As good as I feel now, I'm not doing anything with out the docs approval. I pray that it works as good for you as it is for me. I know its costly but as good as it works for me I would, heaven forbid pay twice what it cost. Splitting those 90 pills would sure save abunch of money though.

Deplin sounded great but didn't do a thing for me. It was also expensive, because as a 'supplement' it was not covered by my insurance. Thus, I did not get it refilled after the first month.

About a month after my original post, I talked to my pdoc, and he did prescribe it. It did nothing for me. I ended up getting so depressed that I ended up in the hospital following a sui attempt. I had taken it for about 3 weeks. The pdoc in the hospital told me that he had never heard of it and the hospital pharmacy didn't have it! I told him a little about it and then told him that I didn't want to continue it anyways because it wasn't helping. I'm glad that it helps some people though.

Well I have to see my pdoc today about the Deplin. I did not take it yesterday or today on psch nurses orders. That little too much energy I stated on Sun. turned into full blown mania Mon. night, and I am not bipolar. I now feel a lot sorrier for my neice who is bipolar, I think I can say I walked a mile in her moccasins, at least on the manic side. Yesterday was alot better still a little hyper. Today not hyper at all but I am groggy and spaced from lack of sleep for the last couple of days. Going to talk to dr about maybe taking the Deplin only once or twice a week, but that will be up to him. The Tech name for Deplin is 5-MTHF L-Methylfolate. I found 10mg caps 90 days for $78. But if I am not going to take it or only once or twice a week that is how I will go.

Yeh if the blood test don't show that what ever it is that is suppost to be mutated isn't it won't do anything. Its a DNA thing. my test show 2 mutants, the Deplin Pharma co. said that it is more uncommon to have 2 mutations when I talked to them on the phone, that is probably why my mood and energy when to the moon. Deplin also does not work by its self, needs an AD med.
