Hi, guys. Has anybody here been on Wellbutrin and Prozac for some time and then switch to taking Effexor in place of the Prozac (still taking the Wellbutrin)? I made that change a couple of days ago and I have no clue what to expect. Thanks.

Not quite the same experience as you, but thought it might be helpful anyway.

Was only on Prozac a short period (relatively speaking). Got up to 40mg and didn't like how it kinda made me feel dead inside. Plus, it broke me out in full-body hives, so I had to come off of it.

Didn't like the PDOC and ultimately didn't go back to him, so was off meds for a while. Then, at some point, decided I wanted to try them again and initially talked to my PCP as I hadn't gotten another PDOC.

Put me on Effexor XR and eventually got up to 150mg. Stayed on that for 3-6 months and got lucky, finding the PDOC I'm with now. We ended up going up to 225mg and staying there for a year or two.

At one point, had an increase in my social anxiety and wanted to try a higher dose (300mg) instead of trying other meds or taking more Klonopin. Was on that dose for 2-3 months max, didn't notice anything and decided to drop back down to 225mg again.

Probably a year or so into taking Effexor XR, talked to my PDOC and decided to try out Wellbutrin XL to help with depression (largely energy, anhedonia) as well as to see if it'd do anything for my anxiety.

Got up to 450mg XL and have stayed there since. No longer on Effexor. Not because it was a bad combo; just wasn't sure it was still working. Ended up switching to Cymbalta
Thanks for this!

You probably know that Effexor has a bad name for withdrawal symptoms. I'm on 112 .5 mg right now and eventually I would like to get off tell me your story about getting off and how was it

Don't remember the exact time frame, but somewhere between a few weeks and a month, but not beyond that.

I was worried about the withdrawal symptoms too, both because of what I'd read and seeing, first hand, my mom experience unpleasant withdrawal, including "brain zaps," after she was prescribed it off-label for menopause-related hot flashes.

It wasn't even a big dose either — 37.5mg, if I remember correctly — but either the NP had little-to-no experience with psych meds or a special kind of stupid because she told her to stop it cold turkey and "should be fine."

Ultimately, with me, it was very painless. I honestly couldn't tell you if I felt anything unpleasant or adverse. So, obviously, take it with a huge grain of salt: I'm sure I was more lucky than anything.

Have taken both together before. Good combo in my experience. Was on a high dose of both too...450 on the W and 375 on the E. I may end up back there as I tried something different and caused a lot of problems for myself.
Thanks for this!

hi. my only major concern would be effexor boosting blood levels of wellbutrin. that ordinarily isn't a big deal, but if you reach a certain point, wellbutrin has a higher rate of inducing seizures than many other antidepressant options.

on the plus side, effexor has a very wide dosing range. I think some people take up to 400 or 600 or...I dunno, a whole lot...per day, and as little as 75mgs or so.

effexor can be difficult to discontinue. i discontinued wellbutrin quite easily. i was tired for a few days, then I was OK. no major problems. my experience might be somewhat unusual, but it seems that wellbutrin is similar to taking a mild stimulant...its even used now and then in some cases of add/adhd.

i hope this helps.
Thanks for this!

I'm on both, Prozac and Wellbutrin. I don't feel any negative effects.

Well it's been about 10 days since the switch from Prozac to Effexor and so far I don't really feel any different. I had a few episodes of drowsiness but I also have had some difficulty staying asleep. I hope once I adjust to the new combo I'll feel less depressed. Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate it.
