I'm just wondering how long I should expect to be in therapy. I haven't discussed this with my T yet, although he has mentioned we will need to work slow through my trauma stuff. I'm not able to talk about details yet. Just very vague.

My therapist is humanistic, client centered, attachment therapy based, and we meet 1-2 times per week. Just wondering how long the average person does therapy, and are there any benchmarks I should have reached by the 2 month mark? I'm still building trust with him, but am not at 100%

Would a certain length of time, frighten you away?

Therapy, can be what you make of it. Each person is different.

I would plan on being there as long as you feel it's worth your time and money in improving your quality of life. Some people take six or 12 or 20 weeks working on fixed issues, some take six or 12 or 20 years working on self-awareness and make therapy a part of their long-term support structure. Many people are somewhere in between, doing from a year to a few years and moving on. Either way, you're completely in control.

Working through trauma, if it's more than one traumatic experience, long-term or in your childhood, expect it to take a few years.

I figured I'd be in therapy 4-5 months, tops. I'm now 10 months in and deeper than I ever imagined. It's really hard to say.

Set up goals for yourself and hold your therapist accountable. The form of therapy I favor is CBT because it is goal oriented. I tell my therapist the issue he gives me a time line, he holds me accountable to it, I hold him accountable to it.

It really depends on what you're looking to get out of therapy.

I've been with my T for almost 5 years, and I still feel like we have tons to work on. I may be with her another 5 years (or more, if she hasn't retired by then!).

Interesting how people have different preferences. It depends too what you are working on. For instance, I am working on interpersonal relationships. A fast-paced therapy track would never work for me because my work is in the relationship I'm developing with my therapist.
Thanks for this!
