Took my elderly mother for blood work then breakfast.
The conversation went kind of like this:

Mom: Are you still planning on taking that test for the animal thing
Me: Yes mom, I am going to become a licensed wildlife rehabber.
Mom: If you ask me, I'd say those animals are what makes you so sick.
Me: I didn't ask you
Mom: Do they get paid a lot?
Me: No, animals don't have wallets, so I don't get paid at all
Mom: You've really blown your calling.
Me: Isn't it time for you to croak yet? (okay, didn't say it, just thought it)

That was in between the: "your sister...blah blah blah" and "your brother...blah blah blah"

Please note, sister(s) and brother(s) don't have time to take her for blood work, but I do since I have NO LIFE and have "blown my calling".

I was the designated care giver, too. In my case, my brothers don't think I'm smart enough to make my own decisions, etc...yet, they left me the most important responsibility of caring for our aged, extremely ill parents...

I could rant on this subject..but won't.

Out of my siblings I am the only one who did not pursue post secondary education. Yet, I have the most to show for myself. Weird how that works.

Funny...and I was the only one who went to a private snooty school instead of state school, and I have the least to show for it. Non-profit life, FTW!

I am the most successful of all my sibling, which is why I do a ton of volunteer work. My mother seems to think that since I don't have an office with a sign anymore that I've given up. So not true. I've just found what matters.

I am an only child...not sure if that's a good or bad thing, really.

Is there an English proverb or saying that means "ugliness cannot be hidden"? I seem to remember something akin to "you can't paint a sow's ear" - though not that of course, I know that sows' ears are what you can't make silk purses out of.

Can I just add that I hate that phrase?
It echos in my head EVERY SINGLE TIME I put makeup on.
Makes me want to cry just thinking of why someone as hideous as I would put makeup on.

Thank you, wikid - and I'm sorry I called up bad memories.

Tonight's unsolicited educational snippet: in Swedish, the phrase is "Snuff is snuff, even if it is kept in a gilded snuffbox" (and it goes on: "And roses in a cracked vase are still roses". It rhymes in Swedish.)

WOW...took a long time to finish reading the old couch and catching up on this one. Now I only have 10 minutes left of my lunch hour.

I read those books yup...all three of those badly written books. I haven't seen the movie though. Not planning on it. The books were bad for me... in a totally different way then they might be triggering for other people.

This discussion made me think of the helpful chorus from the song "Roses" by Outkast...

Possible trigger:

ETA: Hopefully no one on here is offended by those lyrics...just lyrics those sayings reminded me of.

I am the youngest sib of three. I have two older brothers. My oldest brother is a minister and has almost completed his Ph.D....my second to oldest brother has his own marketing company ..and has his bachelors ..very wealthy...then there is me. I attended nursing school, twice, but had a breakdown. I worked in the medical field for several years..but had another breakdown. I have been disabled since 1992.

However, I have been a reasonably successful mother to my dd and a fantabulous Grammy to my grandkidlet. It's been fun reliving my childhood over again with him.
