It helped to have been raised around farmers so we had our veggies fresh out of the field or garden. It also helped to have some fantastic old German, country cooks along the way. I'm picky about my vegetables, but I do love them. Find a farmer's market or a grocery store that specializes in fresh, local produce. A garden fresh tomato just lightly salted and peppered is fantastic. Try a fresh cucumber salad -- yum. I tend to prefer my veggies raw rather than cooked. And if cooked, not overcooked. For instance, I love raw carrots but hate their texture when cooked. It's a texture thing. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers, are great just eaten raw with a light dressing. In season, we keep them in the fridge and snack on them all day.

My basic meal plan is oatmeal & yogurt for breakfast, hot veg & protein for lunch, and a salad for dinner. Then throw some fruits and nuts around.
Thanks for this!

I did start eating a huge salad every day awhile ago...most raw vegetables are pretty good, and I like balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

My diet consists of caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, grease, and the occasional salad to pay lip service to eating healthy. I'm actually surprised I've lived this long.

My cousin is on this diet...it has worked well for her. She plans on doing it for longer than 21 days. I am sorry about your coffee! That sucks!

When I first landed in the US, I discovered the combination of M&Ms + Gatorade + Ho-ho's to be the ultimate fool-proof exam prep diet.

Just the thought of it now makes my stomach somersault....sigh.

I have never had Indian or Thai food, I have seen a couple of Indian food restaurants in town, maybe I'll check one of them out. Thanks!

Indian food really really varies in quality -- if you can, try a South Indian restaurant (it's the more vegetarian cuisine) although fair warning that it can be a bit of an acquired taste for some.

Otherwise, definitely check out the Yelp or Tripadvisor reviews before you pick the restaurant.

I've rarely had bad Thai food (although I've at times challenged the cook to bring on the spices and well, paid the price for it).
Thanks for this!

Did you stick the m&ms in the ho-ho's and dip them in the gatorade? Sorry, I just couldn't resist!

I'm a low fat eating vegetarian who had a heart attack at 38. So now I ignore all dietary recommendations because a fat lot of good my low cholesterol and low triglycerides did me!!! I almost died anyway. So screw it all I'm just eating what I want.

I just looked them up and the one closest to me that I know where it is, says it's South Indian.

I love indian- I just had it last week.- but do be aware that some of it can be insanely spicy (order a mango lassi - delicious or chai to cut the heat of the chilis). Around here, most have lunch buffets so you can try a lot of things to decide what you like. Also they can use a lot of cream and oil - so it might not be as super healthy that way as it you might think. Saag is greens/spinach, paneer is an indian cheese and naan is a flat bread.
This might help:

Yes, this is unfortunately what passes for "North Indian" food outside of India -- really makes a travesty of real North Indian food.

South Indian food (and this is sorta rare to come by, but East Indian food as well) skips the cream, oil crap.

I've never tried Indian food. I think I'd need to go with someone who knew what they were ordering first. One day I'll go with my son. He and his fiancee like Indian food. I wouldn't know where to start.

We have some close friends who are from South India and that is what was referring to - and we go to the restaurants they recommend. So I think, at least where I live -it may be a bit of a mix. It is delicious at any rate. We have a rather large indian community in my city and many of our colleagues at the university where I teach are indian. I love being invited to their houses for dinner.

This comment reminds me of the refectory at one of my schools - it sold vanilla pudding with gummi worms in it. I was very surprised.

I prefer most vegetables cooked at least a little bit. I like raw carrots, celery, turnips and peppers - but I find raw broccoli and cauliflower and squashes not much to my taste - it is the texture thing for me on that.

Textures can be really important. I don't like mushy vegetables at all. Never did like peas, even as a baby; probably never will. That's my son's problem with beans; beans don't bother me though.

That's my issue with celery - the texture. Ugh!
