Oh, I absolutely agree it's complicated -- and as someone who is neither black nor white, not to mention didn't grow up in the US, I usually walk around feeling like I'm missing entire layers of nuance and context.

This is semi related I guess, but more importantly, hilarious. H's dream car is a white Ford F-250 quad cab with a massive confederate flag flying from it.

Also important: H is African-American

Apparently I have only one day left in the US- I got confused and thought it was more like three.

So... I did it. Got through the anniversary and all the awful abandonment crap that went with it, including by my Ts. The extreme weirdness of having to leave my new home for five weeks on the same day that the old one burnt down. And again, both Ts being gone. And because of that fraudulent music festival and my school's effed up payroll, unexpectedly with less than a third of my usual month's income, which I didn't dwell on much due to all the other things but was a huge stressor.

Now I just have to make it through two weeks of extreme Brahms exposure. I can do that. My fingers won't like it but I can do that. Thanks for listening to my BS in the mean time.

Way to go, anais. That's a lot of life that you're been dealing with and from the uninformed perspective of an internet stranger, you've done really well.

I hope you enjoy Belgium.

Turns out we were next door apartment neighbors on 9/11, in this building, but in different apartments than we live in now. He recognized me, i would not have recognized him in a million years. I told him, im sorry if i ever yelled at ya. (I was just starting on meds at that time.)

It makes perfect sense. And, yes, get his abuse on record.

I've got involved in a flame war over General Lee's statue.

I think it is important to remember that the Confederacy was not just some faceless embodiment of evil but it consisted of real people with personalities and stories of their own. I also think it is important to remember that the bad guys sometimes have great generals.

And that's all I'm going to say here.

Not arguing isn't going to bring her back. People engage with what they find interesting. I don't see any reason to judge anyone for it. Plus I believe it is quite disingenuous to get on top all worked up personally over the death of someone one did not know. Certainly one can say it's a tragedy but to act like it's a personal loss seems to me to be trespassing and overreaching on to those who actually do suffer the loss. People who do that are usurping the people who have a right to claim the tragedy/loss.
It is like all those ****ing teddy bears that get sent. Pointless crap that makes the sender or sayer feel better.

And the civil war was not just a one issue war. Putting on narrow politically correct tunnel vision glasses really does not help society in the long run in my opinion. Erasing or rewriting history deliberately through misplaced political correctness is a very very bad plan.

I will 100% judge anyone who does anything except completely condemn white nationalism. I have no idea why anyone else would be getting upset over a f***ing statue, as if that's the real issue here.

It's not a personal loss to me, but apparently I have coworkers who were friends with her. I've been so preoccupied with other things that I didn't know her name until this came up in the couch.

Tomorrow is going to be a cluster at work. Ugh.

Seriously f*** people who go around wailing about the evils of "political correctness". If it's politically correct to f***ing hate Nazis then oh dear, I guess I'm guilty of it. How terrible.

Bigots hide behind the proclamation of "hating political correctness".

To me it means giving a s**t about my fellow human beings. I'm not ashamed of that.

That anyone would be worrying themselves right now over a statue of a morally dubious man, and the public image of the confederacy, when white nationalists are being galvanised by the president into spreading their bile and hatred where they please, is crazy to me. Get your priorities straight. If you're not standing against them what the f*** are you doing, exactly?

Oh good lord. I simply have a different opinion from you on political correctness and glomming on to other people's tragedies. It is not the end of the world nor is it a sign that I am supporting violent idiots who go around spouting off nonsensical white supremacist stuff. You can go around assuming anything you want - but you would more than likely be wrong.

I am a moral nihilist. It is okay with me if others want to twist themselves up over a long gone war that they do not understand. But I am not going to condemn other civilized discourse on parts of the past .

hi all,

I haven't been on a whole lot, a little more the last couple days, but wanted to stop by to say hi. I'm working up the nerve to start school in January. I've decided it's time to suck it up and get a degree. I've been struggling to get on my feet for years and it's time to do something that might help me get some traction. I've been reluctant to do school because I hate school and a college degree doesn't guarantee any kind of job or the quality of a job but I'm hoping it's at least a start. No excuses just finish my plan and get going. Hoping it all works out.
