Hehe I think I've been doing alot of these lately. But, I like to know that other people experience similar things, so I don't feel so alien Another "Have you had this experience" question from me

Have you ever been watching tv, or on the phone, or talking to someone and all of a sudden you can't understand what they are saying? Its just jibberish, and no matter how hard you concentrate, it doesn't change. For me, its lasted from 10 seconds to 10 minutes at a time...I can't do anything to stop it, it just goes away by itself. I will come in on the middle of sentence during the news or whatnot. (Then wonder what they are talking about Another "Have you had this experience" question from me)

Hi,

You're not alone, I've had this happen many many times. I've not had it happen over the phone, but it definitely has happened while watching tv, and mostly when speaking to someone else in person. It's really weird, it's almost like the other person isn't speaking English, or else I've lost my ability to understand English. I usually have to ask them to repeat themselves over and over again, or just give up on it. I've tried to analyze the problem - Does it sound like that as it is entering my ears, or does it sound like that when my brain gets the message? I can't tell. I just know it can be a problem.

Beyond that, sometimes I've had people speak to me and it takes a while for my brain to go from hearing the words to deciphering them before I can reply. I usually impulsively answer those types of questions with a "no" until a couple minutes later when I've really deciphered what was said. Strangely, these two incidents seem much different from each other when experienced.

Hope that helped some,
Skeye

Yup this has happened to me. I figured out that it was a part of my dissociating into my tunnel area and if I look around and locate what is making me feel tis way and use my grounding techniques I can then hear and understand people again.

On one of my Yahoo! Groups, a person suggested we Cast Out these problems, it sort of works for some things.

I pay attention to how I am feeling example - when I am watching tv I am asking myself how the chair feels under me, how the blanket feels that I have it wrapped around me, if the show I am watching is one that I am interested in or is my mind wandering to other things while my eyes are watching, did this character on tv just say something that I liked, disliked, made me upset, am I warm and comfortable or am I feeling cold, nervious, do my legs feel like I need to get up and walk around for a bit, am I hungry, do I need to get something to drink now,

Basically I have trained myself to pay attention to and stimulate all my senses - hearing, taste, smell, touch, sight and pay attention to how what I am experiencing though those 5 senses is making me feel.

I know that there is a foot long word for what I am doing but SKR and I called it (and I still do call it) awareness therapy - reconnecting with my 5 senses and emotions instead of dissociating away from my problems and situations. Its the basic therapy program that I am on for my having DID.

You are deffinately not alone in this. Mostly happens with ppl. with me. Want to cry when it happens because I want so to understand what they are saying yet I can not. I always brush it off as just another one of them wierd things that happens that I can not explain and then brush it off till it happens agin. Phew! is such a relief to hear someone else experiances the same.
thank you for talking about this.
