So I know I am a schizophrenic (if that's how u say it) and I have live for the past 2 years getting worse. Honestly I thought it was normal. My friend was actually the one to point it out to me. (Several times and now thinks I am a freak and no longer talks to me) I can't focus to do anything anymore and really want to get rid of the voices and hallucinations but need real help, if i tel my parents they will dismiss it and laugh and we don't have any money for me to get the help I need. I once thought about running away to somewhere I could get help but quickly dismissed it as I was too afraid I would completely lose it. I have decided to finally ask for help because the other day I actually think I did lose it. It would be really nice if someone would just tell me what to do 😭

I would but my brother went to them last year for some (more simple) help and they didn't do any thing for him (on top of that my mom work where I go so the counselor would tell my mom and my mom would just laugh about it then yell at my for making stuff up)

Basically with how serious your illness is it won't be dismissed and the school counsellor will make sure that your mom takes it seriously even if she works there.

If you live in the US there are lots of places where you can get more information, like NAMI or Crisis/suicide prevention. Or if you can get in to see your doctor. Counselors are supposed to keep information confidential. Your local hospital may also provide you with what's available in your area. You sound as if you may be young, this is a common age for these disorders to develop. It has been shown that early treatment and management is key so please don't let other factors affect you from getting help for yourself

I'm confused - have you actually been officially diagnosed with schizophrenia, or was it your friend who 'diagnosed' you and so you think you might have it??

I would start with the school counsellor as others have said, or your GP. They should take you seriously and convince your parents to take you seriously too. I'm not in the U.S., but I believe that there are avenues for low cost/sliding scale MH care. A Google search might help you, or you could try posting in the insurance and money issues forum for more advice.

All the best,

If I were to go talk to the counselor would I tell her about the episodes, would I tell her what I think (know) I have (would SHE think I was making things up) and if I did have an episode while talking to her would I be sent in an ambulance (I REALLY don't like the thought of ambulances or hospitals) and over all I'm just too scared there are so many things that could go wrong and things that could be said? Where would I begin?

Generally you don't want to self diagnose just explain your symptoms----they won't send an ambulance---usually the care is outpatient so you see a doctor and they'll give you medicine. Where to begin---you mentioned hallucinations start there.

You can make a private appointment with your regular doctor. They can rx meds if needed, or refer you to psych services if they feel its needed. They would not call you an ambulance unless you are having some sort of immediately dangerous crisis.
You can also look up crisis or community mental health phone numbers for your area. They do not have to tell your parents, but if you are underage, they will have to know at some point. You can ask for assistance in educating/informing them. If you are an adult and your own guardian, they do not need to be informed unless you say so.
Good luck to you.

There are many things which can cause hallucinations. Yes, schizophrenia is one cause, but it could also be physical conditions so it's worth getting a check up to ensure your physical health is ok. It's also important to note that it is not uncommon for hallucinations to occur 'normally' ie not due to mental illness or physical illness. This is especially the case in children and adolescents. So I really would try not to jump to the 'worst case scenario' before you've had a chance to be properly evaluated. Also, as others have mentioned, it's a really bad idea to go in to a health professional proclaiming a self-diagnosis. You may well be right but, rightly or wrongly, it tends to put their backs up. It's best to wait to hear what they have to say and then discuss whether you agree or not and why.

I also want to try to put your mind at rest about the hospital and ambulance fear. It is unlikely that will happen to you just for disclosing hallucinations. They can only forcibly hospitalise somebody who is a danger to themselves or others. So if you had suicidal or homicidal thoughts with a plan and were intending to act on that plan, then yes, they could hospitalise you. But otherwise, no.

I suggest just going and speaking to the counsellor. Tell them how it all first started, and what concerns you enough to reach out for help. There is a possibility that they might not believe you. Many people have accused me of lying for attention over the years. However, more people are believed than not, but if that happens to you, then hold on tight to your truth and find someone else who will believe you.

All the best,

*Willow*

I would call a local community mental health center. They are free to low cost and confidential. They can diagnose you and provide the treatment you need. I go to a community mental health network and its free for psychiatry, therapist and a case manager.
Thanks for this!

I do not know how old you are, but I started to experience symptoms like you mention my first year of college, I too thought it was "normal" and lived with it until 2 years after I was out of college and my pastor at the time pointed out that my actions and thoughts were not normal and suggested I see a doctor to talk about them. I did and he said I was expereincing psychosis, though he would not give a dx other than Psychotic Disorder NOS. I later moved to a different county and had to find a new pdoc. He kept the same dx for a bit then, changed it to Schizoaffective (Bipolar Type) as I was having severe mood issues as well. I have been on medication since 2008, though we have had to change it a few times in that period of time.

The important thing (as others have said) is not to self-diagnose. Let a doctor decide. However, if you truly are stressed by all of this, get in to a doctor to talk. If you are a minor, the school counselor is definitely a way to start getting help. I know in my county, the school counselor would take to heart what you said and set up a appt with one of the school psychologists for the district (here they would come to the school to talk to you). While the school psychologist still could not diagnose you, they would be able to tell you if you are experiencing true symptoms or not and they would be trained in helping you approach your parents to get the help you need.

ETA: As far as jobs go, if you are in the US, you do not have to disclose it to the employer. Unless you begin to act irratic at work, there is not need for them to know.
