I'm coming to the end of my college career, and this is where I'm at. At times, I am deeply ashamed of my grades, knowing that if I had done better I would have so many more doors opened to me (more prestigious med schools to apply to, etc.)

What would you think if you met someone with a 3.39? Would you think that they were an underachieving loser? A little on the not-so-smart side? Just average? Or would you think that this was actually a respectable GPA?

From my experience its average. I have a 3.02 and its been pretty much considered shiznit. :/ But the good thing is that people in further programs consider test scores, community involvement, and other evidence of aptitude so we're not limited to solely being judged on it. Heck, it my opinion it is GREAT i'd love to have that, but thats just whats been my experience these last two years. It is definitely respectable - it seems anything over a 3.0 is acceptable and responded to well.

Nice work! At some school schools, this would qualify for you to graduate with the honor, Cum Laude. Check to see where there honors categories fall at your school; the course catalog is a good place to check.

Yeah I am not sure why you would consider it bad. It seems quite respectable. Grad schools, depending on what you are going into, usually take in a broader range of information than GPA and test scores. They consider letters of rec as well as personal statements and CVs so if you can present the whole picture of yourself, it all doesn't rest simply on your grades.

I think that is perfectly fine. I had a 3.44 (with lots of extra-curriculars and a good LSAT score) and I got into law school.

Typically a B average (3.0 GPA) is considered average, so anything above that is pretty good. Your GPA is definitely in the respectable range.

My GPA was similar to yours, and I was also disapointed about it at the time, but I actually graduated in the top 5% of my class, and got accepted into grad school.

Thanks for all the feedback. It's nice to know that I've done better than I thought.

It's easy to feel discouraged because so many med schools accept people with an average GPA of around 3.7. But in the end, as long as I get to where I need to be, it's all alright.

I agree with the other posters that you should be proud of achieving so much, thus far.

You have to ask yourself, "where are these deep shameful emotions coming from?"

You have a long road in front of you, and I see that you are struggling with something by the meds you are on. So be that as it is I would consider you an over achiever!!
And like everyone said, your GPA is only part of the overall picture that schools look at.

Some of the more "prestigious" med schools hold that honor by name only.
You are in control of your future do not compare yourself with others, this will lead to more anxiety and frustration.

Look into the schools you are interested in, the programs they have, and find the right fit for you.

I would not think a whole lot about someone's undergraduate GPA at all. If the person wanted to get into grad school, I'd expect them to be able to (generally a 3.0-3.5) is good enough for those schools that care about your undergraduate grades still) but otherwise I would just look and see whether they figured out how to do what it was they wanted to do with their life.

School may/may not teach one to think "better". I have known those who had 4.0 grades who could not function in a practical sense in the world (my friend in that category could not figure out how her apartment stove worked; I explained to her she had to light it and she replied, "With a match?" to which I too quickly and too sarcastically replied, "Well, you might be able to light it by snapping your fingers if you're a witch?" She was an only child and grew up in an apartment building, raised by doting, much older parents). There are others who do well with no college at all; two of my brothers and myself have degrees, one of my brothers does not; there is not much difference in our career choices, successes and life trajectories.

Please don't kill yourself! GPA is just a number. With an engineering degree, you will be able to get a job right after college.

Do you suffer from depression or another mental health concern? I have bipolar disorder, and now that it is under control I rarely have suicidal thoughts. There is hope!

It is a good GPA that can get you into grad school. Anything a 3.0 or above, so a 3.39 is nothing to sneeze.

My boyfriend is running a 2.1 GPA, and if mine gets below a 4.0, he yells at me. A 3.39 is a low B, so considering everything, you're doing really well.
If I met someone with a 3.39, and they wanted it higher, I would help them get it higher.

I don't know how it is in the US but here the distiction is between pass/fail and have diploma/doesn't have it.

Nobody asked me about my grades in job interviews and nobody asked any of my friends either. In the end, grades are grades. They don't reflect your real abilities all that much. Just how much are you willing/able to sit on your *** and get ram ram ram.

I was asked about my grades as far out as 7 years after leaving college. They even wanted a copy of my college transcript 7 years after college.

I have never been asked for my grades. Certain jobs require transcripts (usually academic ones)...but few. Yr. GPA is very good. What scale does your school use? Where I went, the highest you could achieve was 4.0.

I understand there are some that use a higher scale, but I know of few.

No, a 3.39 average is not bad. It's a solid B, which is always considered good work. I graduated from high school with a 3.33 and still ended up ranked #30 in a class of 444.

Generally, admissions committees are more interested in the quality of classes you take. So a C in physics will look better than a B in cooking class. (No shade on cooking class, which I think everyone should take.)

I also would not worry about how prestigious you school is. You can get an excellent education, with more attention from instructors, at a lesser-known college. It's more important to find the college that is right for you, not someone else

Good luck.

I do not know much about GPAs or GPA averages, but I don't think you're bad. I think you're awesome. My mom's GPA is very bad, and she isn't dumb at all. My IQ is considered "mildly retarded" but that doesn't stop me at all! And I know GPA is a lot compared to an IQ, but I believe in you. I know you can do this. I think that if the schools know what they're really looking for, an intellectual like you, they will definitely pick you. And even if you don't get the best colleges, that doesn't mean you can't go on to be the best at your job, and make everyone around you happy. I think you will be just fine. And you don't sound dumb at all. I hope things will go well for you, like finding a lucky penny!
