I suffer from anger and irritability issues that I think are symptoms of BP/depression. I'm taking two meds that seem to be helping. I'm also regularly engaged in meditation. Does anybody have any additional advice on coping with anger and irritability?

It seems like I always have a short temper and will get angry over the simplest things. I don't know how to control it even when I'm conscious of the fact that the issue causing the anger doesn't warrant it. I try to calm myself down and realize the problem is in my head and not the circumstances or the people involved. I'm kind of getting to the point of hopelessness at this point.

Any help would be great!

I'd also like to hear what people have to comment, as this is something I really battle with too

in some ways, retained anger is like food poisoning, you got to get it out or it will kill you. there's no point in pretending like it isn't there,, few things are more important than learning how to let go of it, and let it move out of the system. i too , have been using meditation everyday, usually twice a day, for the past 5 yrs, and i have seen a tremendous differerence in the way i respond to anger triggers,, i also have been learning biofeedback, to get control of they physical responses, which oddly, affect the thought/emotion loop. i am posting a lot of information on meditation in a new member group, Spiritual Development, if any one is interested ,,, Gus

I am one that has internalized anger for years. The things that I have found to help me release this anger is quite a few different things, depending on the setting I am in. I really like writng and playing piano. The writing I do on my computer, so it i quite similar to playing the piano. I tend to punch out my thoughts on the keyboard(s). Both let me get my frustration/tensio out of my body. The writing also lets me do some focused thinking on my anger, so I can improve the situation or try to prevent similar sitations in the future.

Exercise is the oter main coping skill I use. My personal preference is to go for a quite walk in the country or woods, especially if there is some kind of body of water near by. On such walks, I meditate on the amazing natural world, which helps put me at peace, calms me, so I can think more rationally and communicate with the other person involved in the situation. Otherwise, I like to do some aggressive exercise & at least get rid of the tension in my body.

I hope these ideas can help you. I know personally, I have to get out of the immediate presence of the situation which flared up my anger or I will let my firey temper take over my actions.

Wishing you healing.

I definitely don't bottle up anger, but I also do not release it in an appropriate manner

Do you get angry at certain people more often or in certain situations? If so, I'd talk to the people and see how they perceive you; if they "don't mind" your moods much, it might be okay not to make so much of them yourself; or, if it happens more in certain situations, see if you can avoid or change the situation some.

I have a lot of built up anger too. Actually it revolves around other's people lives and family. I focus on everything they do wrong and get so mad at how they act in their lives, judging them.

The problem is I'm a wreck, yet I'm draining myself getting worked up about other people's lives. People don't change because of what we think. We need to learn to focus on making our lives better and let other people make their own lives better, if they choose to do so.

I have a lot of difficulty with anger and irritability too. What seems to help me somewhat is any sort of exercise. I also have an "angry" playlist that I listen to when I'm in this sort of mood, and that kind of helps.

This is exactly what I do. Exercise releases endorphens and makes you feel "happier" all around. Exercise first thing in the morning and it will help set your mood for the day.

Also I use the "walk away" method. If you get angry at a person then simply walk off to a quiet area and close your eyes. Take deep breaths and listen/concentrate on your breathing and heart rate. This usually works in calming me down.
