I haven't cut now for just going on 3 months, mainly because once I had got over my depression, I no longer wanted to cut. But recently I have had the urge to do it again. I don't know why, because my mood is ok and there's nothing troubling me. But one of my friends emailed me today about how she was feeling triggered to cut, and thinking about cutting triggered me, although I did nothing. I have been thinking about cutting for a while now, and now I think I may act on it. But I don't know why I'm feeling this way. Any ideas?

I'm not sure.. what I try to do when the feelings are stronger than usual is to go to a quiet place and just write about everything that comes to my mind. Going to a park in the summer is nice because its serene and you have less distractions.

If you did cut again, then how would you feel about it afterwards? That might be enough to stop you from doing it, depending on what your feelings are about that.

As far as why you are feeling this way now, there are lots of possibilities. I find that I identify with being a self-injurer, and giving it up would be giving up part of my identity, so after not cutting for a couple of months I start thinking about it more and more because I see it as part of who I am. Maybe it seems like it makes you unique, or you want to belong to a group (other self-injurers). Or you could be thinking about it just because it has been something that was a part of your life, and being reminded of it just brings back some of those memories.

:-( Sorry everyone...but I did cut last night...it's one of those things...I remembered about the "Distraction" techniques after I had done the damage...and now...I just want to do it again...but I have learnt from the past...this time I did it on my thighs...so that nobody can see the cuts if I wear shorts...and so that my arms are cut-free...but I still did it...after being cut-free for nearly 3 months...and I think...that this won't be my only cutting occasion...

Anyone can have a relapse, and it isn't us that you need to be sorry to. I understand. The important thing now is to try to understand what happened so that you can move on. If you are able to plan so that the cuts don't show, then maybe next time you will be able to remember distraction techniques.
