I did the unthinkable last night and cut myself badly enough to need stitches...I was in such a daze at the ER that I couldn't really listen to what the doc had to say about caring for my cut...for anyone who has had stitches, is there anything I can do to help speed the healing process, prevent infection, and keep it from scarring too bad? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Didn't they give you a piece of paper for how to care for it? When do you go back to get the stitches out and it checked? Are you supposed to go to your regular doc for follow-up? Your pDoc or anyone? They'll be able to help.

After the stitches come out in a week or two I'd start using some of that "cream" they advertise on TV:

you can also use 100% vitamine E oil. But make sure it is 100% or it will sting. That heals things pretty quick and reduces scarring.

My friend just did a similar thing and I went to the hospital with her. The ER docs instructions were to keep the bandaging on for 3 days. Then she was supposed to put on neosporin everyday for a few days to prevent infection. I think they took the stitches out ten days later.

Those were the instructions for her, I'm not sure if they'd be the same for you though.

Hope it helps

The last time I had stitches, the doc said that the secret to preventing a scar is to use sunblock every day on the area once the bandages are off. The sun increases scarring. Other than that, keep it clean. Have you gotten the stitches out yet?
