I could've posted this to the smoking cessation boards but it's dead over there.

I quit smoking. Haven't had a cig in 2days. I'm on the patch and I think I'm gonna get the gum and lozenges and alternate between the three.
So I just went to the store to stock up on more Jolly Ranchers and Juicy Fruit to keep my mouth busy... (I swear, quitting smoking's bad for your teeth... I must have had at least 50 pieces of candy today! ) ... and the clerk told me that he used tooth picks and dipped them into a cinnamon or mint flavoring when he quit. I gotta try that!
Some people told me that they would snack on carrots but I don't have much of an appetite since I quit to snack throughout the day like that.

Anyone have any tricks or tips to share???

I quit in 1983. I started by buying cigarettes with lower and lower nicotine until I was on the cigarette with the lowest possible. Then I started putting my cigarettes in a baggie. First week, 19 cigarettes each day, then 18, 17,16.... down to 1 a day for two weeks and then I quit completely. I had about 3 bad days and then it started getting better. I have not smoked since.

My boyfriend just has and he was a serious smoker. He used some drugs called Champix.
Being on Wellbutrin helped me stop

I smoked a LOT for about 20 years - quit in October last year. I tried a gazillion times to quit but never got further than 4 o'clock on day 1. You're doing great!

In October by some miracle I slipped into a different mindset which worked. Instead of being afraid of, and resisting, the craves and 'thoughts', I rode them out. And (but this might be dangerous) I told myself that ciggies weren't falling off the face of the earth and I could smoke if I wanted to, which strongly brought out the fact that I did not want to and this was a choice.

Best of luck - you won't regret it.

same as beebizzy - just rode out the times when i thought 'i'd usually have a ciggie now' and they got less and less - they didnt last very long either

at the start i would still make myself a cuppa and go and sit outside like when i was smoking - so the pattern was pretty much the same and i got 5 mins sitting down away from the kids!

I'm about to quit. I've stocked up on gum & wellbutrin. Chantix is excellent. but my Dr won't presc bc of the risk of side effects.

I think it helps you quit smoking if you drink lots of water and exercise!

Nope, I've been smoking since I was 12 and I'm 33 now. It scares me a lot. Reading about others with bipolar who have quit gives me hope tho that I can too.

I was thinking about trying the e-cigarette. My dr won't give me antidepressants either, and I think he's wise not too.

Congrats to those of you that quit and those of you who are trying. I better get myself to that point.

I would try the e-cigg. My friend used that and I think it is much easier on your lungs. Added bonus you can light up almost anywhere bc there is no smelly smoke

I quit for almost a year on Wellbutrin then started again. I've quit for a year and a half before that and started again. I don't smoke that much, maybe 5 or 6 a day, and not even everyday. Sometimes I will have some nicorette instead, I like the new mister one, the gum gives me jaw pain and the lozenges take too long. I've given up on actually quitting though.

When I smoke I'm calmer and less irritable and I love coffee ans cigarettes. I do know I cannot justify the benefits of smoking over the risks and danger well...long term thinking is a challenge!

Good luck! If you can't quit completely cutting back is good too!

Nope, and I have zero interest in quitting. It's not even like I'm a walking nicotine ad, most days I only have 2 cigarettes BUT, I really like smoking regardless of the dangers...

Wow, this thread took off pretty good! Thanks to everyone who has replied. Congrats to all those who have quit and good luck to those who are planning on quitting!
Day 3 smoke-free here! I don't plan on using the meds, just cause I don't want to. The patches are helping a lot. I'm still debating over getting the nicotine gum and alternating between that and the patches. I am going through juicy fruit and hard candy like water. I'm thinking of stocking up on suckers/lollipops, thinking that they will occupy my hands and my mouth at the same time. Feeling good! Day #4, here I come... !

BeeBizzy... I do the same thing. I have one cigarette on my kitchen counter that I CHOOSE not to smoke. For me it helps knowing I am in control of this. It is my decision. And that makes me feel stronger. Thanks for sharing this!

To those who have mentioned about the e-cig, it has proven to be pretty pointless for me. Since I quit, I have used it twice: a couple drags before bed Tuesday and a couple more after lunch yesterday. It gives the feeling of a cigarette in your throat but obviously there's no smoke and I take deep drags so hardly any vapor comes out, so for me it's not very satisfying at all. My father-in-law now only smokes e-cigs. Unfortunately, it took finding out that he has stage 4 throat cancer to make the transition.

Cocoabeans, may I ask what prompted you to start up again after those year/year & a half breaks? Not so much the specific triggers, but, you know, how did you get to the 'it's OK to do this' or 'to hell with it' point?

I may be romancing the cig here a bit, but I feel like it's not out of the question that I'd start up again too It's not that I'm planning to - but I can't in all honestly rule it out or swear it will never happen.

Trippin, my husband is the same except he is a heavy smoker. He says he will smoke until the day he dies, that it is one of his few pleasures in life. He tells the kids, "I smoke so you don't have to." Ha!
I've always had a feeling that if I keep going and don't quit eventually, that I would end up with lung cancer and that scares the crap out of me. Those smoking ads scare me too. Besides that, I just want to set a good example for my kids.

I am the poster child for unsuccessful quits! I started when I was 19 and I'm now 48. I've been trying to quit since I started. Not sure I can even remember everything I've tried: cold turkey, classes, e-cigs, gum, patch, cognitive behavior therapy, wellbutrin, chantix, nicvax, handheld computer, non-nicotine cigs, ugh. The longest I've ever quit is 36 days, and that was with the Chantix. I threw up every day on that med, and eventually just couldn't take it anymore. Like others, my doctor won't let me try it again because of the side effects. The patch works great, but I'm allergic to it.

My biggest problem is anxiety. When I quit, I have panic attacks. This happens every time, even if I take Klonopin. I'd love to quit. I obsess over getting cancer. But I just don't know how.

I've tried patches, nicotine gum, lozenges (yuck), a hypnotist and the e-cig. I tried candy and gum too. I ditched those for straws and carrot sticks and it worked like a charm. The first three weeks suck though. Good luck!

I quit for a short time using chantix (this was before my diagnosis and it put me into full on mania but I quit smoking!). I started back after three months of not smoking because after the manic period I bacame wicked depressed. I would like to try to quit again, this time with the patches or gum.

Picassoschild, the patches have worked very well for me. I have not smoked in 11 days! The gum tastes like you are eating chewing tobacco so... yeah. Lol... good luck!
